Mission The Sacramento Youth Commission is a youth led commission/advocacy group whose mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance the quality of life for Sacramento youth by advising the City Council and the public on issues relating to youth policies, programs, and opportunities. Commissioner Qualification Requirements: • Reside or attend school in the City of Sacramento • Between the ages of 14-19 • Possess a desire in improving the lives of youth in Sacramento Benefits: • Provide a unique experience with city governmental procedures. • Gives opportunities to help address Sacramento’s youth. • Offers chances to meet motivated youth from around the city. • Financially compensates time and effort with stipends. Sacramento Pride Parade, June 10th Now in its 35th year, Sacramento’s Pride is the preeminent LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) community event in the region. The 17,000-person festival produced by the Sacramento LGBT Community Center takes place Sunday, June 10, 2018. It is designed as a safe, welcoming, and affirming experience that celebrates diversity and commemorates the Stonewall riots that ignited the modern LGBTQ rights movement. PARADE AND MARCH ON Sunday, June 10th, 2018 at 11am. Parade March starts at 3rd and N Street, ends at 10th and N Street. Emceed by… (stay tuned!), this year’s parade march is going to be a can’t miss part of the celebration! Parade march participants include Blue Shield of California, California Endowment, Kaiser, and much more! Following the parade march, spectators can use the festival entrance on 7th and Capitol Mall. FESTIVAL FUN FOR EVERYONE Sunday, June 10th, 2018 from 11am-5pm, cost $10 per person (children ten and under are free), and is located on the Capitol Mall between 3rd and 7th streets. Purchase tickets here. Sacramento Pride is an LGBT celebration that promotes acceptance and pride with a parade followed by an outdoor party in the Capital Mall. High-energy live music, a dance pavilion, an activity-rich kid’s zone, local vendors, and plenty of food trucks are just some of the many attractions at this day long affair. The R Street Phase III Project: The City of Sacramento and CADA partnered on improving pedestrian safety, accessibility and streetscape improvements for R street from 13th to 16th Street. The improvements and additions include: • Additional dining space for restaurants • Wider sidewalks • Shorter crosswalks • ADA complaint curb ramps • New lighting • Planted 29 trees • Drainage system to accommodate street run-off • Site beautification • Reconstruction of the main railroad track Valley Rail Project Receives Major Grant Funding by State – Will Fund Series of New Stations and Track Improvements to Increase Connectivity and Frequency of Passenger Rail Service to Sacramento The Valley Rail Project is a joint proposal by the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority and the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission to dramatically improve passenger rail service to the Sacramento region with both Amtrak San Joaquins and Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) service. The Valley Rail project will implement a new transportation vision for serving the Sacramento region with integrated intercity and commuter rail service. The grant funds will help perform track improvements on the existing Union Pacific Railroad Sacramento subdivision freight corridor that runs just east of Interstate 5 to make it usable for passenger service, and build new shared San Joaquins and ACE stations in Lodi, Elk Grove, Sacramento City College, Sacramento Midtown, Old North Sacramento, and Natomas which will include a shuttle connection to the Sacramento International Airport. What is the timeline for Valley Rail? Valley Rail is ready to advance. If the SJJPA/SJRRC joint TIRCP application is successful in receiving SB 1 funding, construction is anticipated to start in 2019. The environmental process is underway and draft documents for public review will be available for the ACE Extension to Sacramento in Summer 2018 and for the ACE Extension to Ceres in Fall 2018. Burnett Jr. Memorial Scholarship June 2nd, 8:30 AM 3800 Land Park Drive Join the Walter F. Burnett Jr. Memorial Scholarship for a no stress 5K Run/Walk in the beautiful William Land Park. The Walter F. Burnett Jr. Memorial Scholarship is a non-profit that has been providing scholarships for deserving graduating high school seniors and college students pursuing a postsecondary degree. Their scholarship recipients range from single parents, grandparents, foster, and legal guardianship homes and demonstrate perseverance in the face of hardship. Sacramento Zoo Free First Wednesdays June 6th, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM 3930 West Land Park Drive Thanks to the generosity of Wells Fargo Bank, the first Wednesday of every month will be free for kids at the Sacramento Zoo. Up to four children ages 2-11 receive free admission to the Sacramento Zoo with a paid adult. For more information, click here. Capitol CPR Day June 7th, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM California State Capitol - North Steps In coalition with the American Heart Association, EMS Medical Directors Association and other emergency medical services groups, emergency health professionals are putting together a large CPR training marathon on the California State Capitol steps. There will be CPR training workshops, EMS vehicles, vendors and food trucks. This event is FREE! Each year, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for cardiac arrest at home, at work or in public spaces. For more information, click here. YPG June Bike Tour June 9th, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Old Soul on Capitol Mall, 555 Capitol Mall May isn't the only month for biking! Join YPG on a June Bike Tour of current developments happening around downtown Sacramento: The Bridge District, The Mill at Broadway, Northwest Broadway Specific Plan, and Crocker Village. Each stop will have a short presentation by members of the project teams. The tour will end at Track 7 Brewing in time for lunch and a drink! We encourage you to rent a new JUMP bike for the tour! Use your smartphone to find one near you and bike over to our meeting spot at Old Soul on Capitol Mall. Download the app here: JUMP Sacramento. Cost: JUMP costs approximately $15 for 3 hours (or free if you bring your own bike!) Time: Bike tour starts at 9:30 a.m. and goes until 12:00 p.m. Items to Bring: Bike, helmet, bike lock, water bottle, sunscreen. For those 21 and over, bring your I.D. to enjoy a beer. Pride Activated! June 9th, 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM Mango's, 1930 K Street Continue Pride weekend with Pride Activated on Saturday, June 9. We are proud to announce our first ever Pride Activated! Pride didn’t start out as a celebration, it began with a revolution. The patrons of The Stonewall Inn in 1969, led by transgender women of color and drag queens, tired of harassment, discrimination, police raids and beatings, rioted for days in one of the first organized displays of protest in the modern LGBTQ rights era. Join us for a free event, to help elevate and activate the voices of youth and our most marginalized community members.
