Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety Austrian Wine statistics report 1.2 Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety 2 The data in this section is based on the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, as well as feedback from the wine-producing federal states of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, Steiermark (Styria) and Wien (Vienna). The main source of data for the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine was the Wein-ONLINE system operated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMNT). Data from the remaining federal states was collected by means of a questionnaire (primary data collection). Information relating to the (approved) nurseries was provided by the Burgenland and Lower Austrian Chambers of Agriculture and the Styrian state government (Agricultural Research Centre). According to the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, Austria’s vineyards occupied 45,574 hectares. The planted vineyard area was 45,439 ha, which corresponds to 94 ha less (or a 0.2% decrease) in comparison to the 2009 Survey of Area under Vine. The long-running trend that suggested a shift away from white wine and towards red was quashed by the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine. While the white wine vineyard area increased by 2.3% to 30,502 ha compared to 2009, the red wine area decreased by 4.9% to 14,937 ha. Figure 1 shows the evolution of Austrian viticulture after the Second World War. The largest area under vine was recorded in 1980 at 59,432 ha. From 1980 onwards, the white wine vineyard area has continuously decreased, while the red wine vineyard area has expanded.

Töpfer Julius Kühn-Institute (JKI), Institute for Grapevine Breeding Geilweilerhof, Siebeldingen, Germany Summary Various hypotheses exist about the geographic origin of 'Blauer Portugieser' and 'Blaufränkisch'. According to a Parent offspring analysis already revealed genetic re- legend 'Blauer Portugieser' was introduced by the councilor lationships for 'Blauer Portugieser' and 'Blaufränkisch', of commerce and court councilor, Johann Baron von Fries, sharing at each locus one allele with 'Grüner Silvaner' from Oporto in Portugal to Austria. Kinda a lot of pressure for a fermented beverage, but we know Wine can handle it. We’ve gone all in on natural wine because we believe in celebrating farmers and other stewards of the land who work tirelessly to create biodiverse landscapes. Think of wine as a transmitter of a certain place and time in history: if made with nothing but grapes, a bottle has the ability to tell us what the soil in the vineyard is composed of, what the weather was like in a given vintage, and what the surrounding flora and fauna are doing. Cover it up with any number of 60-plus legal chemical additives, and what are you left with? Something engineered that no longer transmits its story. There is no official definition of what natural wine is. But we have our definition, and here’s our promise: every wine on this list is grown organically or biodynamically, free of any chemicals in the vineyard. Every wine on this list is made without any additives except sulfur, which is naturally occurring in grapes. Every wine on this list is fermented with its own living, wild yeast. And every wine on this list is made in small, or very small, amounts. It’s difficult to find fault with any of that. We love these wines and the people behind them, and we hope you do too.     2017 Herrenhof Lamprecht Buchertberg Rot Vulkanland, Austria Gottfried is very paced, formal, and soft-spoken on first impression. Then you see his art that adorns the cellar. My favorite is an explosion of color with “I am on fire” written in bold. Then you head out to the vineyard where he’s planted to over a 100 different grapes from scratch with a philosophy of “freestyle wine growing” and following his own self imposed Charta. Then you taste his red and white field blends and bringing historical grapes like Furmint back into the fold and they are in indeed also on fire. He is exponentially more than his initial impression and we are proud to be importing these into the US for the very first time with this shipment. The Lamprecht family owns what was once the Vorau Abbey until it closed at the end or the 19th Century as feudal law and many other politics changed. The monks did grow vineyards on the same slopes, but the land has been without grapes for many decades. In 2006 Gottfried starting planting block by block until reaching 9 hectares and has been certified organic from the start. He studied horticulture at the University of Vienna, but is more guided by the field blend tradition that was lost in the appellation as opposed to making pure mono varietal wines that is far more prevalent. Being able to start from scratch and control every element himself is what makes this producer special apart from the wines being delicious of course. VINEYARDS Gottfried is not without a dry sense of humor.
