2018 Herrenhof Lamprecht Furmint of Sandstones Vulkanland, Austria 2018 Herrenhof Lamprecht Furmint of Sandstones Vulkanland, Austria Gottfried is very paced, formal, and soft-spoken on first impression. Then you see his art that adorns the cellar. My favorite is an explosion of color with “I am on fire” written in bold. Then you head out to the vineyard where he’s planted to over a 100 different grapes from scratch with a philosophy of “freestyle wine growing” and following his own self imposed Charta. Then you taste his red and white field blends and bringing historical grapes like Furmint back into the fold and they are in indeed also on fire. He is exponentially more than his initial impression and we are proud to be importing these into the US for the very first time with this shipment. The Lamprecht family owns what was once the Vorau Abbey until it closed at the end or the 19th Century as feudal law and many other politics changed. The monks did grow vineyards on the same slopes, but the land has been without grapes for many decades. In 2006 Gottfried starting planting block by block until reaching 9 hectares and has been certified organic from the start. He studied horticulture at the University of Vienna, but is more guided by the field blend tradition that was lost in the appellation as opposed to making pure mono varietal wines that is far more prevalent. Being able to start from scratch and control every element himself is what makes this producer special apart from the wines being delicious of course. VINEYARDS Gottfried is not without a dry sense of humor. He labels his wines grown on his own Buchertberg hill as “ABC” (Appellation Buchertberg Contrôlée). The soil here is mostly weathered sandstone, silt, gravel, and “opok” (clay, marl). The reds prefer the opok while the whites thrive in the sand and gravel. Given the official Vulkanland Appellation, there is volcanic activity (basalt) as well, but not dominant. As mentioned, he has been organic since 2007 and keeps his yield at or less than 45 hl/ha. Cover crops are wild and the place is buzzing. The Pannonian climate is similar to southern Burgenland, but overall PH is typically lower. What really sets Gottfried apart is the extensive field blend. Here is a list of what’s currently planted: Adelfränkisch, Affenthaler, Augster Gelber, Auxerrois, Bettlertraube, Blaue Frankentraube, Blauelbling, Blauer Arbst, Blauer Elbling, Blauer Hängling, Blauer Sylvaner, Blauer Wildbacher, Blaukölner, Bouquet- Silvaner, Bourguignon, Elbling, Frühburgunder, Frühe Magyartraube, Furmint, Gelber Langstieler, Gelber Traminer, Gewürztraminer, Goldriesling, Grauburgunder, Grüner Sylvaner, Grüner Veltliner, Grünfränkisch, Hartblau, Heunisch Rotgestreift, Heunisch Schwarz, Honigler, Jubiläumsrebe, Kleinberger Kerner, Kleinedel, Kleiner Burgunder, Morillion, Muskat-Gutedel, Muskateller, Neuburger, Ortlieber, Peloursin, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Piros Furmint, Riesling, Roter Elbling, Roter Gutedel, Roter Hänisch/Pamid, Roter Heunisch, Roter Traminer, Roter Veltliner, Rotgipfler, Sauvignon Blanc, Scheurebe, Schlehentrauben, Schwarzurban, Süßschwarz, Tauberschwarz, Trollinger, Weissburgunder, Weiße Orleans, Weisser Gutedel, Weißer Heunisch, Weißer Kadarka, Weißer Lagler, Weißer Räuschling, Weißer Tokayer, Weißer Veltliner, Welschriesling, Zierfandler, and even some Zinfandel. WINE MAKING The winemaking is fairly simple. Most wines are destemmed and crushed. He avoids being overly phenolic, so there’s very little forced extraction or lengthy skin contact. Typical maceration is between 36-40 hours. All fermentation is spontaneous, he uses used 300L to 600L oak (40% coopered locally), and extended lees aging is key (9-18 months). The only addition is SO2 at bottling, usually around 20ppm total. NOTES & PAIRINGS Typically, Gottfriend thinks that Furmint would like it a little warmer and drier than on the Buchertberg. On the cusp! However, given climate change, he considers this a solid investment and has historical lineage in the region. His 2018 is bone dry, zero botrytis, full malolactic, and has a crazy chalky texture. Completely unlike anything from Tokaj, Somló, Northern Serbia or Južnoslovenská. • 2018 Losonci Pinot Gris Matra, Hungary
2018 Losonci Pinot Gris Matra, Hungary Bálint Losonci entered the wine business as a writer for the wine magazine Borbarát under László Alkonyi. He was exposed to a whole world of Hungarian wines in the late 1990s that was just waking up after Communism. He then apprenticed under Gábor Karner (whom he found via Borbarát), and joined a few other liked minded small producers who believed in the future potential of the Mátra appellation. Hungary’s Mátra appellation is quietly the second largest in the country (7500+ hectares), but has been dominated by just a few larger industrial players – perhaps a bit of a Soviet cooperative era hangover. The typical vine density is designed for large tractors and there’s a disturbing amount of Müller-Thurgau and Chasselas geared more for table grape yields than wine. He and others greatly increased vine density, planted native grapes, moved to organic farming, and drastically reduced yields. In the cellar, the main tenants are native fermentation and no other additions other than SO2. Given the wines typical of the area, all of this was somewhat unheard of on a commercial level. He continues to experiment and push himself, but what remains constant is his unwavering community oriented mindset and desire to put Mátra back on the wine map. His vineyards and wines reflect this drive, ambition and generosity. VINEYARDS Roughly 8 hectares are spread across the villages of Gyöngyöspata, Gyöngyöstarján and Nagyréde (single vineyards include Gereg, Tamás-hegy, Sárosberek, Peres, Virág-domb, Oroszi, and Lógi). The first thing Bálint did was plant in between the existing rows (pre Communist era vine density), retrained the vines to drop yield to maximum 1 kilo per plant, and transitioned to organic farming.

    1. Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety Austrian Wine statistics report 1.2 Vineyard areas and areas under vine by grape variety 2 The data in this section is based on the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, as well as feedback from the wine-producing federal states of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, Steiermark (Styria) and Wien (Vienna). The main source of data for the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine was the Wein-ONLINE system operated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMNT). Data from the remaining federal states was collected by means of a questionnaire (primary data collection). Information relating to the (approved) nurseries was provided by the Burgenland and Lower Austrian Chambers of Agriculture and the Styrian state government (Agricultural Research Centre). According to the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine, Austria’s vineyards occupied 45,574 hectares. The planted vineyard area was 45,439 ha, which corresponds to 94 ha less (or a 0.2% decrease) in comparison to the 2009 Survey of Area under Vine. The long-running trend that suggested a shift away from white wine and towards red was quashed by the 2015 Survey of Area under Vine. While the white wine vineyard area increased by 2.3% to 30,502 ha compared to 2009, the red wine area decreased by 4.9% to 14,937 ha. Figure 1 shows the evolution of Austrian viticulture after the Second World War. The largest area under vine was recorded in 1980 at 59,432 ha. From 1980 onwards, the white wine vineyard area has continuously decreased, while the red wine vineyard area has expanded.

(2020). Resistance of hybrid wine grape breed- ing forms to downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola Berkeley et Curtis). Bulg. J. of Agric. Sci., 26(2), 441–444 In the period 2014-2016, at the experimental vineyard of the Institute of Agriculture and Seed Science “Obraztsov Chiflik” – Rousse, the resistance of hybrid wine grape breeding forms to downy mildew with causative agent Plasmopara viticola (Berkeley et Curtis) oomycetes fungus was studied. Objects of the study were the hybrids: 25/12 (Pamid Rousse 1 × Kaylash- ki Misket), 5/51 (Naslada × Chardonnay) and 5/83 (Naslada x Chardonnay). Misket Otonel cultivar was chosen as control. The aim was the reaction of hybrid wine breeding forms of vine to downy mildew caused by Plasmopara viticola (Berkeley et Curtis) to be determined. The phytopathological assessment of the attack of Plasmopara viticola on leaves was carried out according to the OIV 452 scale, and on berries and clusters – according to the OIV 453 scale, where the resistance was represented in 5 grades 1-3-5-7-9, as 1 was maximum resistance. The following traits were registered: index of attack (%), correlation coefficient between disease progression and yield obtained, weight of cluster (kg), maturation period, sugar content (%), acid content (g/l).

  • 45. REASONS for WINE TOURISM in BULGARIA M. Pereviazko, K.O
    45. REASONS FOR WINE TOURISM IN BULGARIA M. Pereviazko, K.O. Veres National University of Food Technologies Wine tourism industry in Western Europe, especially in France and Italy are much more developed than in Bulgaria. But this is not due to the quality of drinks. Geographically, Bulgaria is located in the same climate zone as Spain, France and Italy - the major wine regions of the world. Just like these countries, It is considered one of the centers of cultivation of grapes. Scientists believe that the Thracians in the territory of modern Bulgaria made first wine in Europe. Eater the Greeks to find out from the Thracians secret receipt of grapes divine drink and arrogated to themselves the right of the pioneers of winemaking. Why do people prefer wine tourism not just drink wine at home what bought in the store? First of all, people should be remembered that wine, as opposed to people do not like to travel. As experts consider, in a way it can "get sick." So before the 93 entertain friends by wine from faraway countries, give him a chance to "rest" at least a week. The beauty of wine tourism is not sightseeing. Meeting people who produce this drink it is remains in the memory. Real manufacturer is in love with his work, and talk with them is very interesting. Some aesthetes prefer to stay in the castles of winemakers, to communicate with these eminent people. Observation of the production of wine can cause at least surprising in an untrained person. Guests can still see how the grapes are crushed underfoot in small wineries in Bulgaria.

  • Vine Behaviour and Wine Composition in Ltalian Riesling Grapes As Iniluenced by Differential Cropping Levels
Vitis 18, 122-126 (1979) Institute of Viticulture and Enology, Budapest, Hungary Vine behaviour and wine composition in ltalian Riesling grapes as iniluenced by differential cropping levels by V. R. BALASUBRAHMANYAM, J. EIFERT and L. DIOFASI Das Verhalten der Rebe und die Zusammensetzung des Weines unter dem Einfluß abgestufter Ertragsmengen beim Welschriesling Z u s a mm e n f a s s u n g . In a previous paper (3) the authors have reported the influence of the crop borne by the vine on the accumulation and storage of nutrient reserves in the canes. The present paper deals with the effect of the cropping level on yield and quality of the crop. Bunch number and yield increase linearly with increasing number of buds re tained at pruning within certain limits. Changes in the pruning level will alter potential crop accordingly (2). This is supported by the observations of KrnALY (6), MARTIN and TALOJ (7). SueeJAH and RAo (12) observed that crop-regulated Anab-e Shahi vines yielded higher crops than the vines pruned to a maximum number of buds. RANGELOV (9) obtained the highest yields from Italian Riesling vines pruned to 32 and 36 buds over the range 20 to 88 buds per vine studied.
