“I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (Jn 13:34)

When Jesus told His apostles to love one another, He meant that their love for each other must be like His love for them. And what is the love of Jesus? It’s a love that forgives, a love that is not dependent on the love that it receives. It’s a love that doesn’t count the cost of loving; and a love that is very much willing to sacrifice. This is a very challenging teaching that Our Lord Jesus gives us. It goes against what is ingrained in many of us who want justice or revenge. It goes against those who are told to strike back. But Jesus is completely consistent in this teaching and it informs everything he has taught: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us ; turn the other cheek; love your enemies!” Do we carry this central teaching into our lives? Do we offer forgiveness, assistance, and time to those who are in need to the best of our ability, talent, and resources? This week, I ask you to see Jesus among the strangers you will encounter. I ask you to find ways to ‘hear’ Jesus speak. Let’s see and enlarge our view and see Jesus in people and try to love them by empathizing, by helping, by sharing – and extend the kingdom of God just a little further in our life.

Easter Blessings, Fr. Vincent

Reverend James Walsh Born August 20, 1944 Ordained June 8, 1969 Died May 4, 2019 Monsignor James Walsh, a priest of the Diocese of San Jose, died after a brief illness on May 4, 2019, in County Kilkenny, Ireland, at the age of 74. James Walsh was born in Kilkenny on August 20, 1944, the son of Edward Walsh and Elizabeth O’Shea. He attended Kieran’s College and Saint Kieran’s Seminary in Kilkenny, and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Kilkenny on June 8, 1969. His uncle, Father John Walsh, was also a priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. In the Archdiocese, Father Walsh served in the following assignments: Assistant Pastor at Parish in Redwood City, Associate Pastor at Saint Christopher Parish in San Jose, Saint of Cupertino Parish in Cupertino and Saint Simon Parish in Los Altos. In 1981, he was appointed as Pastor of Saint Cyprian Parish in Sunnyvale, in the newly-created Diocese of San Jose. Returning to Saint Christopher Parish, he was Pastor there from 1989 until his retirement to Ireland in 2010. Recognizing his exemplary service as a priest, Bishop Patrick J. McGrath nominated Father Walsh as a Prelate of Honor, with the of Monsignor, an honor granted to him by John Paul II in 2000. Monsignor Walsh will be remembered for his love of the people whom he was sent to serve – in each of his assignments. He was particularly beloved by the parishioners of Saint Cyprian Parish and Saint Christopher Parish, where he ministered for a total of 27 years, both as Associate Pastor and as Pastor. In many ways, he was the last of the “old time ,” and was truly a loving shepherd of the flock entrusted to his care. Monsignor Walsh is survived by sisters, Annie Drea and Margret Phelan and by brothers William, Edward and Martin Walsh, and by many nephew and nieces The Funeral Liturgy was celebrated at Holy Trinity Parish, Hugginstown, Kilkenny, on May 8, 2019. Father Christopher Bennett, Pastor of Saint Christopher Parish, represented the Diocese of San Jose. There will be a Memorial Mass at Saint Christopher Parish, 1576 Curtner Avenue, San Jose, on Thursday, May 30, at 5:00 pm, followed by a reception.
