Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a year, according to the following pattern: Eastern Archdeaconry - January, February Archdeaconry of France - March, April Archdeaconry of Gibraltar - May, June Diocesan Staff - July Italy & Malta Archdeaconry - July Archdeaconry of North West Europe - August, September Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe Nordic and Baltic Deanery - September, October Germany - November Swiss Archdeaconry - November, December Each Archdeaconry, with its Archdeacon, is remembered on a Sunday. On the other Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect all of us (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). Some chaplains might like to include prayers for the other chaplaincies in their deanery.     Saint of the Month for May 2013 (A monthly series compiled by Tom Quinlan) Saint Bede the Venerable, Priest and Doctor of the Church Saturday, May 25 We move to the world of England before the Norman conquest (1066 A.D.) when we look at the life of St. Bede. He was born in 672 or 673 A.D. near Jarrow (east of Newcastle), and lived near this famous monastery for just about his entire life. Nothing is known about his parents, and very little about his life. He joined the Benedictine order, was ordained a deacon at 19 and a priest at 30. He was known for his learning and writings during his life, and was given the title of “the Venerable” while still living, a rather rare honor. (The title was one of respect sometimes bestowed on distinguished members of religious orders.) He’s probably best known today for his Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (Ecclesiastical History of the English People), which covered the period from Julius Caesar’s raids on England in 55-54 B.C. to the arrival of St. Augustine, the first archbishop of Canterbury, in 597 A.D. This work was finished in 731-732, and is essential for those wanting to know about the arrival of Christianity in England up to ecclesiastical events in Bede’s own time. It used a reckoning of the time of events based on the number of years since the incarnation of Christ, a scheme popularized by the wide circulation of his History , and still used today- A.D., anno Domini (in the year of the Lord).

    A STUDY OF “THE SAINTS THROUGH THE CENTURIES” By Richard Thornton SAINT BEDE THE VENERABLE (637-735) – SEVENTH CENTURY At the age of seven, Saint Bede was given by his relatives to the Abbot Benedict to be educated. From that age on, he spent all of his life at that Monastery, except for a few brief visits to nearby sites. Saint Bede spent his entire life in the Monastery, devoting himself to the study of scripture and to teaching and writing. Saint Bede became an extraordinary scholar, perhaps the most outstanding of his day. He was deeply versed in all the sciences of his times; natural philosophy, the philosophical principles of Aristotle, astronomy, arithmetic, grammar, ecclesiastical history, THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS, and especially, Holy Scriptures. From the time of his ordination to the priesthood at 30 (he had been ordained Deacon at 19) till his death, he was ever occupied with learning, writing, and teaching. Besides the many books that he copied, he composed 45 of his own, including 30 commentaries on books of the Bible. Saint Bede’s best known work is Historia Ecclesiastica, A History of the English Church and People, which he completed in 731. It is an accurate account of Christianity in England up to 729 and is a primary source of Early English History used today. Other notable writings were, Commentary on Genesis, On the Tabernacle (Commentary on Exod. 24-30), On the Temple (On 3 Kings 5-7), On the First Book of Samuel, On the Song of Songs, Thirty Questions on the Book of Kings.

Abstract This doctoral dissertation investigates the writings of the Venerable Bede (673-735) in the context of miracles and the miraculous. It begins by exploring the patristic tradition through which he developed his own historical and hagiographical work, particularly the thought of Gregory the Great in the context of doubt and Augustine of Hippo regarding history and truth. It then suggests that Bede had a particular affinity for the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles as models for the writing of specifically ecclesiastical history. The use of sources to attest miracle narratives in six hagiographies known to Bede from Late Antiquity are explored before applying this knowledge to Bede and five of his early Insular contemporaries. The research is rounded off by a discussion of Bede’s use of miracles in the context of reform, particularly his desire to provide adequate pastoral care through his understanding of the ideal bishop best exemplified by Cuthbert and John of Beverley.

    CASE STUDIES : Day Workshop in Tanzania Case Study – Day Workshop in Tanzania Background: This day workshop was held in Morogoro, Tanzania in October 2013 following an intensive 3-day seminar with three Tanzanian church leaders exploring how the central theme of the “Bible in the Life of the Church” [BILC] project might be looked at in Tanzania. The outline of this workshop was then used by the three leaders in other parts of Tanzania. What follows is an outline of the workshop, a commentary from Stephen Lyon, the Coordinator of BILC who observed the event and an assessment of the workshop. It is offered as a Case Study that might be adapted for use elsewhere. The Aim of the Workshop: To encourage and equip church leaders to motivate congregations to a deeper engagement with the Bible. Or in its Tanzanian context: “Kuwatia moyo na kuwawezesha viongozi wa kanisa ili wawatie moyo waumini washiriki kwa kina katika kusoma, kutafakari, na kuielewa Biblia.” The outline of the programme: Coffee/tea on arrival 10.00 Welcome and Introductions Who facilitators are Aims of the project 10.15 Bible engagement – Job 1:6-12 [in small groups] Passage chosen for its application to the local context of Tanzania. Questions: 1. What picture of Satan does the passage give? 2. What is the relationship between Job’s wealth and his piety? 3. What is the source of Job’s suffering? 4. How do you apply such a passage? 11.15 Feedback Written by the group then shared followed by discussion. 12.00 Share experiences of how they encourage people to deeper engage with Scripture apart from preaching.
