JUST AS I AM

f you were amongst the thirty thousand plus who gathered at the PraySingapore event at the Sports Hub on 7 October, you would agree that the screening of the short clip of Billy Graham’s rally in 1978 was a notable moment. We were transfixed by his message. We were moved by how the crowds responded to the salvation altar call, while his signature rally song, Just As I Am, rang out. I felt myself transported back in time as I reflected on what the Gospel meant in those days. Sin has caused the divide between man and God. God so loved the world Ithat He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins. He came to save us and this offer of salvation is free. To be a Christian, one only has to turn from his sins (repent) and “receive Christ.” One does that through praying the "sinner’s prayer.” Undoubtedly, Billy Graham was one major reason why so many churches worked together and gathered at the National Stadium. Beyond his magnetic personality, however, was our shared conviction in the Gospel’s message - that we can come, just as we are, responding to the bidding of the Lamb of God - which made those rallies such a deeply spiritual and unique experience. Christians invited many friends because of this conviction. That was the answer to a gnawing spiritual vacuum. I happen to know personally some who entered the stadium 40 years ago as non-believers. Some of them today are pastors while many others are serving as key lay-leaders in churches. One of them became married to me. I know it is easy to be nostalgic. Our society has changed so much. The Church has gotten a lot more sophiscated. The ‘gospel’ is understood and preached in many ways. We have become more sensitive to other faiths, and rightly so. We have also become more sensitive to how information on social media can quickly rouse and divide our society. Incredibly, during the 1978 rallies, there were some Christians who positioned themselves outside the stadium and tried to persuade the crowds that Billy Graham was a heretic. Today, something like this would be the least of our concerns. The Gospel is two thousand years old. As it traversed through time and culture, each generation and society has had to re-articulate its message so that her people can know and be drawn to it. With the advent of the internet, we have become more connected to each other across the globe than ever before. With these innumerable modern Towers of Babel, it may seem like God is not needed anymore. The community in Singapore can be as diverse as the world herself as our citizens log into these towers. And yet, the Gospel message remains unchanged. The creed, whether said or sung, remains as the shape of what the Church believes. It finally boils down to one’s conviction. It is less about the method. It isabout recapturing this Gospel conviction. It is not about churches making the Celebration of Hope a success. It is the other way round: will churches and Christians be stirred to share the Gospel in 2019 the way they did in 1978? It may have to be re-articulated, as I have already said, but is there the same conviction of the uniqueness of Christ and the power of the Gospel to change lives? We pray so. We pray that during those evenings in May, many will stream down the stadium steps, and come just as we are.

That means that the words in the scriptures to follow God fully. As a Pharisee well-versed in the are translations of the original conversations that scriptures, Jesus expected Nicodemus to get that this outpouring of the Spirit was at hand. In verse 8, Jesus uses yet another wordplay. Spirit and wind are both denoted by the word pneuma. However, there is another more common word for wind, anemos. John just as easily could have used the more common anemos to refer to wind, but that wouldn’t flesh out the analogy he was trying to make between the wind and the work of the spirit. Even though the wind can be neither controlled nor understood by human beings living in 1st century Palestine, they could detect its effects. So, it is with the Spirit. We can neither control him nor understand him, but that does not mean we cannot witness his effects on people. Where the Spirit works, the effects are undeniable and unmistakable. So, Jesus told Nicodemus that being born from above through the Spirit is necessary for entrance

Alma Mater: Behind the Scenes By Mr Ch’ng Jun Yi and Mr Benjamin Yuan (Christ Church Secondary School)

The video production that these former students-turned-teachers had in team - Mr Ch'ng Jun Yi and choosing to come back to serve. Mr Benjamin Yuan of Christ Church Secondary School These stories touched us deeply, and we are quite sure they moved you too!

The video Alma Mater was created to explore and bring out the unique culture and ethos of Anglican Schools that has drawn former students back to serve in them. The project was helmed by the Principal of Christ Church Secondary School, Mr David Lau. The team included Mr Ch’ng Jun Yi (Head of Department, Character and Citizenship Education, Christ Church Secondary School) and Mr Benjamin Yuan (Subject Head, Geography, Christ Church Secondary School). The video was screened in parishes during Diocesan Education Month this September. Watch the video again at http://www.anglican.org.sg/education-board

n making this video, we wanted to Ishowcase the Anglican school experience, and to uncover the reasons why some of our former students have chosen to serve in their alma maters. Working in partnership with our school leaders and the video crew, we reached out to alumni from the Anglican schools, many of whom came forward readily to be part of this project. Through the interviews, we learnt about what they treasured from their years as students, and found out more about the values they picked up in those formative years. What we enjoyed most about the filming process was that we did not start with a message that we wanted to “sell”. The interviews were all unscripted, and the interviewees were presented with only broad guiding questions. This allowed our interviewees to reach into themselves for their most memorable memories, and to speak straight from their hearts. Through these rich and often moving conversations, we gained authentic insight into what inspired them to come back to their alma mater. We were also able to capture cutaway footage of scenes that gave us glimpses of the Anglican school experience. These were not pre-arranged shots – we sought to put down on film a snapshot of students in the midst of their school life. Seeing our interviewees in action with their students, we experienced first-hand the enjoyment

A total of six aspects of early childhood education are assessed: leadership, planning and administration, staff management, resources, curriculum and pedagogy. Once SPARK-certified, the accreditation is valid for six years. Prior to 2016, the validity was for three years.

These pennants are a visual testament to the act of faith that “If we take a step of obedience and offer whatever we have, even with only five loaves and two fish, we can reach out to thousands of people in need”, Dr. Arthur Chern encapsulated in his speech. Concluding the dinner with the anthem “Here I am, Lord”, it was an opportunity for all present to renew our faith in answering God’s call to be bread and blessing to others, just as Jesus has given us, His people, life by eating of the bread that He himself offers us. As SACS and SAMH continue our commitment to meet the needs of the sick, the poor and the disadvantaged, may we do so with great compassion and love, to give of ourselves in the spirit of Jesus, our Bread of Life.

OPH Halfpg.indd 1 10/18/2018 8:36:05 AM HOPE IS .

WHAT DOES HOPE MEAN TO YOU? As believers, we know the hope we celebrate: The love of the Father. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. And our fellowship with the Holy Spirit. But what about those around us who haven’t discovered the joy of knowing Jesus yet? Wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to help them find hope?

THAT’S WHAT THE CELEBRATION OF HOPE IS ABOUT. From 17 to 19 May 2019, the church across Singapore, across every denomination, will unite in the spirit of personal evangelism on a mass scale, inviting our loved ones — no matter their age, nationality or language spoken — to the National Stadium to hear the Good News of Jesus.

HOW CAN YOU BE A PART OF THE CELEBRATION OF HOPE? Think of at least 5 people who could really use the love of Jesus. PRAY for them. ENGAGE them in blessings and conversation. GATHER them by inviting them to the Sports Hub in May 2019.
