1 The Unknown Freud Talk given by Robert L. Lippman to the Humanist Society of Metro Louisville on May 4, 2017. This evening I am going to present a picture of Sigmund Freud --one radically different from the various portrayals of the father of psychoanalysis you may have read or heard. In his 1958 essay, "Psychoanalysis--Science or Party Line?," Erich Fromm asserts: unconsciously [Sigmund Freud] ... wanted to be ... one of the great cultural-ethical leaders of the twentieth century. He wanted to conquer the world ... and to lead man to the only--and very limited--salvation he was capable of: the conquest of passion by intellect. To Freud, this--not any religion or any political solution like socialism--was the only valid answer to the problem of man. [In Fromm, E. (1963). The Dogma of Christ; New York: Holt, Rhinehart and Winston] Freud, however, eludes Fromm. The following paraphrase conveys my radically different reading of Freud: 2 consciously [not unconsciously].Freud ] wanted to conquer the world and to lead man to the only--and very limited--salvation he was capable of: the conquest of passion by intellect. To Freud, this was the only valid answer to the Jewish problem. In other words, Freud, like the founder of modern Zionism Theodor Herzl, was bent on delivering his people from anti-Semitism—but unlike Herzl, Freud did not broadcast his messianic ambition. Whereas Herzl's Promised Land was a sovereign Jewish State [realized: Israel], Freud’s Promised Land was an enlightened secular world grounded in reason, a brotherly world in which the seed of Abraham can move freely over frontiers. -

MENACHEM KELLNER Judaism and Artistic Creativity: Despite Maimonides and Thanks to Him IN SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND the place of artistic creativity in Judaism, Maimonides hardly appears to be a promising source with which to start. His emphasis on intellectual perfection as the defining characteristic of humanity would not appear to make him a promising candidate for our project. This is all the more the case when we consider that, for him, intellectual perfection involves the apprehension of already established truth, not the creation of new knowledge. Despite this, I suggest that Maimonides can be very helpful in seeking to elaborate a Jewish approach to the value of artistic creativity. Maimonides may have been the first posek to count the imitation of God (imitatio Dei ) as a specific commandment of the Torah. Yea or nay, he certain - ly emphasized its importance. The first text in which Maimonides discusses the imitation of God is his Book of Commandments , positive commandment 8: Walking in God’s ways. By this injunction we are commanded to be like God (praised be He) as far as it is in our power. This injunction is con - tained in His words, And you shall walk in His ways (Deut. 28:9), and also in an earlier verse in His words, [ What does the Lord require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, ] to walk in all His ways? (Deut. 10:2). A Bridge across the Tigris: Chief Rabbi Joseph Herman Hertz Our Rabbis tell us that on the death of Abaye the bridge across the Tigris collapsed. A bridge serves to unite opposite shores; and so Abaye had united the opposing groups and conflicting parties of his time. Likewise Dr. Hertz’s personality was the bridge which served to unite different communities and bodies in this country and the Dominions into one common Jewish loyalty. —Dayan Yechezkel Abramsky: Eulogy for Chief Rabbi Hertz.[1] I At his death in 1946, Joseph Herman Hertz was the most celebrated rabbi in the world. He had been Chief Rabbi of the British Empire for 33 years, author or editor of several successful books, and champion of Jewish causes national and international. Even today, his edition of the Pentateuch, known as the Hertz Chumash, can be found in most centrist Orthodox synagogues, though it is often now outnumbered by other editions. His remarkable career grew out of three factors: a unique personality and capabilities; a particular background and education; and extraordinary times. Hertz was no superman; he had plenty of flaws and failings, but he made a massive contribution to Judaism and the Jewish People. Above all, Dayan Abramsky was right. Hertz was a bridge, who showed that a combination of old and new, tradition and modernity, Torah and worldly wisdom could generate a vibrant, authentic and enduring Judaism. Hertz was born in Rubrin, in what is now Slovakia on September 25, 1872.[2] His father, Simon, had studied with Rabbi Esriel Hisldesheimer at his seminary at Eisenstadt and was a teacher and grammarian as well as a plum farmer. -

The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -

Introduction 1 Introduction I try to imagine the twenty-three-year-old Dr Sally Daiches, as he was known in 1903, stepping on-board the ship that would take him to Britain. Did he board in Hamburg or Bremerhaven? Where did he alight? Dover, or Southampton, Hull or Grimsby? Or did he dock in Liverpool? His name is not to be found in the shipping lists I have consulted. I see him walking up to the office to complete the formalities preceding embarkation, his suitcase in one hand, his ticket in the other, also holding on to his hat which threatened to blow off and tumble on to the pier. In my mind, the image, though moving, is in the format of an old film reel, black-and-white, our rabbi-to-be and all other people on the pier are moving fast and in the somewhat unnatural way of early films. Salis’s face is obscured by the brim of his hat and by the hand which holds it so that I cannot make out his expression. What did he feel as he set foot on to the ship? Was he nervous and apprehensive? Or was he excited, full of hope for the future and calmly confident of a glittering career ahead of him? Perhaps all of these emotions coincided in the young man as he walked up to the large steamer which would deposit him in the south of England before travelling further west to New York. Did Salis travel alone or did his older brother Samuel accom- pany him? Were they perhaps with a group of friends all set to emigrate westwards? We are unlikely ever to know the answers to these questions.1 We do know, however, that Salis was part of a large number of young Jewish men who sought their fortune serving Jewish congregations in the anglo- phone world, men who left behind, at least geographically, the traditions of Eastern European Jewish life. -

The Passion for Metaphysics in Maimonides' Thought
Dov Schwartz The Passion for Metaphysics in Maimonides’ Thought My concern in this paper is five chapters in Guide of the Perplexed I:31–35. Centring on an educational and didactic issue, this unit deals with the proper approach to the study of metaphysics as manifest in the requirements concerning four aspects: 1. A scientific aspect: preceding the study of metaphysics by the study of other sciences (logic, mathematics, physics, and astronomy). 2. A methodological aspect: preserving proper rules of thought, proceeding cau- tiously and constantly examining the arguments. 3. An ethical aspect: focusing exclusively on the study of these sciences and keeping away from material concerns. 4. A political aspect: concern for the masses – guaranteeing they do not exceed the limited boundaries of their comprehension while ensuring their access to a minimum of metaphysical assumptions. I will argue that, in this unit, Maimonides relies on what he views as an almost uncon- trollable urge to reach the summits of knowledge. I will further argue that Maimo- nides turned the passion for metaphysics into a powerful political and theological factor. The conclusion of the discussion will be that this unit is one of the most con- centrated expressions of Maimonidean rationalism. Several questions recur in discussions about the Guide: Maimonides’ aim in writing the book, his attitude towards science and its connection to revelation on the one hand, and towards biblical exegesis and rabbinic sources on the other. Additional questions touch on the character of the book, the reason for the order of its chapters, its concealment techniques, the identification of esoteric ideas, and so forth. -
