Teemad on samad, mis eelmistel aastatel. Ajalis-ruumilise põhimõtte järgimiseks ning nii vertikaal- kui horisontaal- analüüsiks on andmete esitamine iga teema osas sarnane 2007. a aastaraamatuga: Tallinna viimase viie aasta näitajad, Eesti analoogilised näitajad ning lisaks seoses valglinnastumisega mõne teema osas Harjumaa võrdlusandmed. Iga teema sissejuhatuses on Tallinnaga seotud olulisemate tegevuste ning ettevõtete lühikirjeldus ning tabelites kasutatavate mõistete selgitused. Statistikakogumiku teemade ja tabelite valikul on lähtutud järgmistest põhimõttest ja vajadusest. • Tallinna ja linna valdkondlike arengukavade, strateegiate, aastaraamatute ja -aruannete ning erinevate analüütiliste ülevaadete koostamine; • Vajadus tutvustada Tallinna kui Eesti Vabariigi pealinna; • Tallinna osalemine erinevatel rahvusvahelistel konverentsidel ja konkurssidel, vastavate esitlusmaterjalide koostamine; • Aastas üle 50 erinevaid sotsiaalmajanduslikke valdkondi käsitlevale teabenõudele operatiivne vastamine. Tallinn arvudes 2008 ja 2007 koostaja, toimetaja ja kujundaja on arenguteenistuse linnauuringute osakonna statistik Peeter Kuulpak. Tallinna Linnakantselei arenguteenistus 3 In 2009 the statistical yearbook Tallinn in Figures is published for the 17th time. Breakdown of topics is the same as in previous years. In order to follow the principle of time and space, as well as vertical and horizontal analysis the presentation of data by topics is similar to that of the yearbook 2007: indicators of Tallinn for the past five years, relevant indicators of Estonia, also, because of urban sprawl, comparative data of Harju county on certain topics have been presented. Introduction into each topic gives a short overview of the most important activities and companies related to Tallinn and definitions of the terms used in tables. Selection of topics and tables of the yearbook is based on the following principles and needs: • drafting of sectoral development plans, strategies, yearbooks and reports of Tallinn, as well as different analytical overviews; • introducing Tallinn as the capital of Estonia; • participation of Tallinn in various international conferences and competitions, drafting of relevant presentations; • possibility to respond immediately to over 50 enquiries about different socio-economic issues made annually. 2008 and 2007 Tallinn in Figures have been compiled, edited and designed by Peeter Kuulpak, statistician of the City Survey Department of the Development Service of Tallinn City Office. The data sources are: Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Education and Research, Bank of Estonia, Estonian Rescue Service, Statistics Estonia, Estonian Land Board, Estonian Road Administration, Estonian Police Board, Social Insurance Board, Estonian Labour Market Board, Health Protection Inspectorate, Estonian Health Insurance Fund, Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund, Northern Police Prefecture, Population Register, Abortion Register, State Construction Register, Commercial Register, Eesti Energia AS, Tallinna Küte AS, Tallinn Airport Ltd, Port of Tallinn, Port Vene-Balti, Port of Miiduranna, Tallinn Bekker Port Ltd, Pirita Harbour, Tallinn Water, Tallinn Landfill Ltd, National Institute for Health Development, Estonian Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, Park Kadriorg, Tallinn Botany Garden, Tallinn Philharmonic Society, Song Festival Grounds, Tallinn City Museum, Tallinn City Theatre, Tallinn Zoological Gardens and different departments and services of Tallinn City Office and Government. Merrick Yamamoto Visual Tutor Company, 2016 From the President’s New Year’s Eve Message, December 31, 1999 Dear fellow countrymen! Today, we are all one big family. Today, in my mind, I shake hands with all of you, look everybody in the eye, and ask: how are you? Today’s New Year is so different from all that have been and all those still to come. It is mysterious, at least in our imagination. Round numbers have a powerful influence on our mind and on our behaviour, especially when the New Year is also connected to the beginning of a new century, a new millennium. A friend of mine even asked me for an interview concerning the third millennium. I asked him: What could a tiller or a fisherman from Rävala or Saaremaa have said about the second millennium in the year 999? On the New Year, there will be no change in the constellation of stars, in the movement of the Sun or the Earth. For an ancient Estonian, the flow of time was constant and indivisible, like the peaceful flow of a river. We toast the new millennium, fill the sky with fireworks and celebrate today, because we are part of the Christian culture. The year 2000 is a year of advent, the year of transition, taking us to the third millennium after the birth of Christ.
