ODOARDO FOCHERINI, Laico

Odoardo is one of the many Italian heroes of the holocaust. In 1969 Israel posthumously officially recognized him for his work in saving from transportation to concentration camps. Israel, declared him a Righteous among the Nations, an honorific for non-Jews aiding Jews. Odardo’s humanitarian deeds led to his arrest and confinement in Nazi labor camps in Germany within a year he died from a leg infection. While in the camp he met other internees, many of whom survived. They were able to save his last correspondence to his wife. Odoardo was born in Carpi, () in 1907; he had three brothers, born of two different mothers. Odoardo’s mother died when he was two years old, and his father remarried and had three more sons. The family originated from the Val di Sole, in Trentino. Odoardo’s father developed a hardware store, in which his children worked. Odoardo went to elementary school and technical school and continued to work in his father’s store. Working in the store put into contact with many people. He met don Armando Benatti, an apostolic of young people and don Zeno Saltini a lawyer and priest. These two individuals developed in Odoardo an interest in social and public works for Christ. In 1924 he was instrumental in developing, Il Aspirante, a religious newspaper for youth. He continued his works with the public, and in 1924 he made a visit to Val di Non a place near to where he spent his youth, and met Maria Marchesi. They married in 1930 and produced seven children. In 1942 he became involved in helping Polish Jews escape into , his work continued until 1943, by that time he had assisted over 100 Jews. The Nazis arrested him in Modena and sent him to , and from there to many different camps, and died in camp Herbruck in Germany. On the 10 of May 2012 the declared him Venerable, opening the door for in recognition of his martyrdom.
