The Center encourages study of the visual arts from a variety of approaches by historians, critics, and theo- rists of art, as well as by scholars in related disciplines of the hu- manities and social sciences. The resident community of scholars consists of the Samuel H. Kress Professor, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor, and the Andrew W. Mellon Lecturer in the Fine Arts, in addition to approximately eighteen fellows, including Senior Fellows, Visiting Senior Fellows, Associates, Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellows, and Predoctoral Fellows. The activities of the Center for Advanced Study, which in- clude the programs of fellowships, research, meetings, and publi- cation, are privately funded. Mellon Professors Stephanie Kristich, Secretary to the Research Program Helen Tangires, Staff Assistant Curatorial Liaison Edgar Peters Bowron, Senior Curator of Paintings IO Report of the Dean June 199S-May 1996 The Center, in its sixteenth year, sponsored study of the visual arts in each of its four major program areas: fellowships, research, pub- lications, and scholarly meetings. The resident community of scholars at the Center for Advanced Study in i995-~996 included individuals working on topics rang- ing from medieval Chinese pagodas to postwar residential archi- tecture in the United States. Scholars focused on such issues as craft and philosophical aesthetics in antiquity, the "self-image" of the Roman villa, abstraction in the textiles of ancient Tiwanaku, Parisian Flamboyant in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and album production under the Timurid and Safavid dynasties. Members of the Center included scholars from Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, and the United States. The scholars from Latin America were funded by two programs sup- ported by the Inter-American Development Bank with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Association of Research Institutes in Art History (ARIAH). ARIAH'S fellowship program for Latin American scholars, now in its second year, is administered by the Associate Dean, who serves as chair of the association. Three long-term research projects, under the direction of the deans, are currently underway at the Center. The first, the devel- opment of the National Gallery's photographic archives in the area II of pre-i 800 Italian architectural drawings, has resulted in approx- imately z5,ooo images gathered from European collections. A sec- ond project, "Keywords in American Landscape Design," has en- tered a new phase as the corpus of 1,5oo images is being scanned onto CD-ROMS in order to become available through the National Gallery's photographic archives. A multivolume reference work of this project is in preparation for publication. A third project, a guide to documentary sources for the art history and archaeology of the Andes, was initiated this past year. In conjunction with the Johannes ,Vermeer exhibition at the National Gallery, the Center for Advanced Study organized a sym- posium on 3 ° November-x December I995 devoted to recent re- search and emerging issues in scholarship on the Dutch painter.     Varstvo spomenikov, 44 Mateja Neža Sitar The Only (Self)Portrait of Quaglio and the Consequences of its Renovation Key words: Ljubljana cathedral, Giulio Quaglio, self-portrait, monument preservation service, conser- vation and restoration procedures, Baroque painting technique, removal of impurities, retouching Abstract In the early 18th century, in the heyday of Baroque art in Ljubljana, the dean and patron of the construc- tion of the new Ljubljana cathedral, Janez Anton Dolničar, commissioned the northern Italian painter Giulio Quaglio (1668–1751) to adorn the cathedral of St Nicholas with frescoes. The Lombard Baroque painter, who was born in Laino on Lake Como, was a distinguished mural painter in Friuli and Gorizia, and he created his greatest masterpiece of his virtuoso artistic career in the illusionist murals in the inte- rior and on the exterior of the Ljubljana cathedral (1703–1706). Later, in 1721–1723, he returned with his son and completed the murals in the chapels of the nave. At that time the frescoes in the Ljubljana cathedral represented one of the largest cycles in Slovenia, and moreover, they were the most important commission of the artist. Because of this, he added his self-portrait to the images, which, according to research, is the only such example in his oeuvre in Italy, Austria and Slovenia. In 2002 a team from the Restoration Centre initiated one of its most complex and demanding conserva- tion and restoration projects on approximately 532 square metres of murals on the vault and western wall of the Ljubljana cathedral. The difficulty level of the project is evident from the methodology and organisation of the four-year work process, which in addition to concrete restoration procedures on the murals also entailed ongoing research, analysis, verification, study and documentation from various ex- pert points of view.

The exhibition was intended as the Society's at University of California, San Fransisco on March 16, 2015 tribute to two eminent sons of Glasgow who have been strangely neglected, and was made the occasion of an attempt to bring together material, manu- script and printed, that would ultimately be used in compiling an adequate biography of the brothers and a complete bibliography or their press. The authorities of the University of Glasgow readily granted the necessary accommodation, and on 12th April, before a Large gathering, the exhibi- tion was opened with an address on the Foulises by the President of the Society, Mr. David Murray, LL.D.1 That the exhibition should have been held in the University was appropriate on various grounds. 1 The address, illustrated and much extended, has been issued in Yolume form by Messrs.
