These initiatives were driven by simple curiosity, focused experimentation, patriotic and humanitarian ideals, and the quest for profit. Homes, small workshops and large manufactories all felt the impact of these ‘polite and commercial’ impulses and the resulting artefacts; they spread beyond the peerage and landed elite through the professional and middling sorts. -

The Scottish Historical Review VOL. XIV., No. 54 JANUARY 1917 Some Letters of Robert Foulis noble array of books issued from the press of Robert THEFoulis, and of his firm of R. and A. Foulis, is a worthy memorial of his skill and taste as a printer, of his eager desire to promote learning and to diffuse a taste for literature. We have, however, comparatively little information regarding himself and the incidents of his life, and anything which supplements this information is welcome. The following letters tell something of his story, and will be read with interest. The first four are in the of G. Burnett of the possession Mr. J. Powis House, Aberdeen ; other two are in my own possession. The earliest letter is addressed to Lord Aberdour, 1732-74, afterwards (1768) fourteenth Earl of Morton, who was a student at the University of Leyden, under the charge of Mr. John Leslie, 1727-90, subsequently professor of Greek in King's College, Aberdeen, of whom Mr. Burnett gave a sympathetic account in this Review (S.H.R. xiii. 30). Lord Aberdour had been a student at the University of Glasgow during the years 1748 and 1749. The Messrs. Foulis, it will be remembered, were booksellers as well as printers and publishers, and their bookshop was a pleasant lounge, in which professors and students were accustomed to meet, dally with the books, talk over the topics of the day, and discuss questions of philosophy with the printer, criticise his most recent publications, and canvass his pro- posals for the future. -

You are advised to consult the publisher’s version if you wish to cite from it. http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/167329/ Deposited on 20 August 2018 Enlighten – Research publications by members of the University of Glasgow http://eprints.gla.ac.uk Cultivating the classics “in a cold climate”: the Foulis Press & Academy in Glasgow Craig Lamont Robert (1707-1776) and Andrew Foulis (1712-1775) rose to prominence in Glasgow as booksellers and publishers under the mentorship of Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), the so-called ‘Father of the Scottish Enlightenment.’1 Despite no major study of the brothers since David Murray’s Robert and Andrew Foulis and the Glasgow Press (1913), recent scholarship has identified their role in the production of classical texts during the Scottish Enlightenment.2 Following Philip Gaskell’s comprehensive Bibliography of the Foulis Press (1986), art historian George Fairfull-Smith has been the most active researcher of the Foulis brothers: organising an exhibition on the Foulis Press and Academy in 2001; publishing a companion text; and, more recently, tracing the Academy’s impact on the fine arts in Glasgow in The Wealth of a City, v. 1 (2010). Yet problems remain with our understanding of the brothers. Call for Papers 52nd ASECS Annual Meeting Baltimore MD March 31 – April 2, 2022 Session Program Guidelines Abstracts or proposals should be sent directly to session organizers no later than September 17, 2021. Session organizers are reminded that all submissions received up to that deadline MUST be considered. Completed panels will be submitted using an online form; a link to this form will be sent to session organizers in mid-September. In the meantime, contact the ASECS Business Office with any questions – [email protected]. All breakout rooms at the Annual Meeting will be equipped with a screen, projector, and wifi. Additional room configuration or technology requests must be submitted by the session organizer on the online form. Session organizers will be required to confirm that all equipment requests are essential to the purpose of the session. Equipment requests or changes made after September 30, 2021 may not be accommodated. It may not be possible to fulfill all special requests. The Society’s rules permit members to present only one paper at the meeting. Members may, in addition to presenting a paper, serve as a session chair, a respondent, a workshop facilitator, or a roundtable, seminar, or workshop participant, but they may not present a paper at sessions they chair. No member may appear more than twice in the program (excluding sessions sponsored by ASECS). No individual may submit paper proposals to more than two panels. Since you can present only one paper at the meeting itself, you must notify both panel chairs if you are submitting two proposals for papers, whether or not the proposals concern the same topic. -

Press Office Threadneedle Street London EC2R 8AH T 020 7601 4411 F 020 7601 5460 [email protected] www.bankofengland.co.uk 29 October 2006 Governor's Adam Smith Lecture 2006 The Governor of the Bank of England is to announce in a lecture in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, tonight that Adam Smith, one of the fathers of economics, is to appear on the Bank of England's new £20 note. The Governor is giving the annual Adam Smith lecture at St Bryce's Kirk in Kirkcaldy, the birthplace of Adam Smith. The Governor said: “It is appropriate that tonight here in Kirkcaldy, where Adam Smith found contentment in study and reflection, I can announce that tomorrow the Bank of England will reveal its new £20 note. And the figure celebrated on the new note will, of course, be Adam Smith - the first economist and the first Scotsman to appear on a Bank of England note.” The notes will carry a portrait of Smith and an engraving showing the division of labour in pin manufacturing with the words “and the great increase in the quantity of work that results”.
