Ortega y Gasset, Miseria y Esplendor de la Traducción, Obras Completas “Ningún problema tan consustancial con las letras y con su modesto misterio como el que propone una traducción.” Jorge Luís Borges, Las Versiones Homéricas, Discusión, Obras Completas I 1923-1949 “The purpose of a writer is to be read, and the criticism which would destroy the power of pleasing must be blown aside.” Samuel Johnson, Life of Pope ABSTRACT This dissertation presents and analyzes excerpts from my unpublished translation of Patrick White’s The Solid Mandala into Brazilian Portuguese considering its socio-historical and cultural aspects at three levels of reading: as a translator, as a revisor/proofreader of the translation and as a literary critic. Itamar Even-Zohar’s Polysystems Theory is adopted to justify the importance of (re)introducing Patrick White as a representative of Australian Literature into our Brazilian system via translation. Supporting the abilities necessary to perform the task, Amparo Hurtado Albir’s model of competences is presented. In regards to cultural aspects, Javier Franco Aixelá’s culture-specific items theory is used. The translations into French, German, Italian and Spanish are contrasted to mine, so as to identify inconsistencies and/or solutions and call attention to challenges which were not addressed. The version in Brazilian Portuguese is conveyed in this dissertation via selected excerpts, with the three levels being at work during the proofreading process of the translation. By attempting to make Patrick White’s oeuvre be rediscovered not only in Brazil, but also in South America and in other Portuguese-speaking countries, through translation, this dissertation presents an innovative contribution to Translation Studies. RESUMO Esta tese apresenta e analisa excertos da minha tradução não publicada de The Solid Mandala , de Patrick White, em português brasileiro, considerando seus aspectos sócio- históricos e culturais em três níveis: como tradutor, como revisor da tradução e como crítico literário. A teoria dos polissistemas de Itamar Even-Zohar é adotada para justificar a importância de (re)introduzir Patrick White como representante da Literatura Australiana em nosso sistema literário brasileiro por meio da tradução. Como suporte às capacidades necessárias para realizar a tarefa, o modelo de competências de Amparo Hurtado Albir é apresentado. Quanto aos aspectos culturais, a teoria dos itens específico-culturais de Javier Franco Aixelá é empregada. As traduções publicadas em francês, italiano e espanhol são contrastadas com a minha a fim de identificar inconsistências e/ou soluções, bem como chamar a atenção para desafios que não foram contemplados. A versão em português brasileiro é proposta por meio de excertos selecionados, com os três níveis estando em funcionamento durante o processo de revisão da tradução. Ao buscar fazer a obra de Patrick White ser redescoberta não somente no Brasil, mas também na América Latina e em outros países de língua portuguesa, por meio da tradução, esta tese oferece uma contribuição inédita aos Estudos de Tradução.     CORPORATE PEACEBUILDING AND THE LAW: REGULATING THE PRIVATE SECTOR FOR CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION Jonathan Asher Kolieb (ORCID iD 0000-0002-3590-6756) Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2017 Melbourne Law School The University of Melbourne ii ABSTRACT Corporations have social responsibilities and legal obligations in conflict zones. Moreover, many large transnational corporations (TNCs) have the capabilities and capacities to positively contribute to the prevention and resolution of armed conflicts around the globe. However, the potential of “corporate peacebuilding” has yet to be fully realised in theory or in practice. This thesis argues that unlocking this potential requires legal and regulatory innovation. It examines the relationship between peace, corporations and the law, and suggests that the private sector has a largely untapped peacebuilding potential in large part, due to weak governance at the global and national levels. Focusing on the governance of Australian-based TNCs, the thesis argues to realise this potential requires legal and regulatory innovation. Building upon the theory of responsive regulation, a novel regulatory framework is developed for this purpose, embodied in the regulatory diamond heuristic. It encompasses three key components: minimum standards, compliance regulation and aspirational regulation. The thesis then applies this framework to the problem at hand, and in particular explores the law’s roles in each of the constituent elements of a regulatory diamond framework that may help realise the promise of corporate peacebuilding. The thesis argues that international criminal law norms of behaviour are the most legitimate source of minimum legal standards for TNC conduct in conflict-affected areas.

    SOURCES FOR MILITARY HISTORY Gloucestershire Archives - 1 - INTRODUCTION Military archives held by Gloucestershire Archives are considerable in volume and wide- ranging in content. The term “military” has been widely interpreted, as explained in the section below: “Scope of this Guide”. It includes military material of an archive nature transferred from the Gloucestershire Collection into the archives. This has been listed, mostly, under reference D9125, but retains the original “Austin” numbers. It also includes details of material in the Collection itself, which was relocated from the Library to the Gloucestershire Record Office* in December 2005. Paul Davidson carried out the initial research for this guide under the Millennium Commission's Sharing Museum Skill Millennium Awards scheme when he was on secondment from the North Devon Record Office. Grateful thanks are due to Angela Newcombe, who checked Paul Davidson’s original draft, identified many additional sources and went through the final document. The guide was expanded, restructured, edited and updated by Peter E. Bloomfield, until March 2006 the Deputy County & Diocesan Archivist, Gloucestershire Record Office. This work was greatly assisted by the completion, in 2005, of the catalogue of the records of the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (RGH), by Kate Maisey, Senior Cataloguer. The introduction to her catalogue of that substantial archive provides a very detailed explanation of the development and content of the RGH and its records.
