She was probably also the Susannah Rogers who was head of a household in the 1820 census in Savannah (1 white male 16-18, 1 white male 16-26, 1 white female over 45, 1 person engaged in manufactures). ix. Samuel Bowen, for some time a prisoner in China, was responsible for the first introduction of soybean farming to North America.3 2 From the Georgia Gazette of 14 Jul 1791: “I do give notice that Mrs. Susannah Rogers, formerly Miss Susannah Spencer, hath lodged in my office an affidavit stating that she lost or mislaid during the late revolution a certificate for £200…dated the 12th day of February, 1778…” [Savannah, Georgia, Newspaper Clippings (Georgia Gazette), vol. 3 (2000), p. 336]. 3 His interesting career is described in T. Hymowitz and J. R. Harlan, “Introduction of Soybean to North America by Samuel Bowen in 1765.” Economic Botany 37(1983): 371-379. Children of Samuel Bowen and Jane Spencer (order uncertain):4 15. i. DOROTHY (MARTIN) CUYLER (widow of Henry Cuyler and 4 Hymowitz and Harlan (1983), p. 374; see previous note. The identity of three of these children is confirmed by the will of Dr. Samuel Beecroft, who married Elizabeth Ann Bowen. In his will (dated 20 Sep. 1800 and probated 7 Oct. 1801), he named his wife, “formerly ‘Miss Elizabeth Ann Bowen’”, his adopted daughter, “Jane Elizabeth, dau. of James Flint Bowen, Sr., and the niece of my wife”, and “Mary Bowen, sister of my wife.” [Abstracts of Wills Chatham County, Georgia 1773-1817 (NGS special publ. 6, 2nd printing, 1963), p. 11 (will book D)]. That Samuel Bowen had a son named Samuel is confirmed by the following marriage notice from the Georgia Gazette of 15 Apr. 1790 (3:1): “Savannah, April 15. Married. Mr. Samuel Bowen, son of Samuel Bowen, Esq., deceased, to Miss Polly Waudin.” [Marriages of Chatham County, Georgia, vol. 1 (1748-1852) (Genealogical Committee of Georgia Historical Society, 1993), p. 29]. John Spencer was appointed guardian of Samuel, James, and Mary Dinah Bowen in 1788 (see above). 5 Chatham Co. deeds II:316-317 (FHL #183,633). illegitimate daughter of Clement Martin) about 3 July 1783 in Savannah. ANTHONY TODD THOMSON, born 7 January 1778 in Edinburgh; died 3 July 1849 in Ealing, Middlesex. He married (1st) 21 July 1801 in Edinburgh CHRISTIAN MAXWELL and (2nd) 14 February 1820 KATHARINE BYERLEY in Barford, Warwickshire. 13. WILLIAM2 HENRY SPENCER (William1): born about 1763 in GA; died 28 February 1817 in Savannah; married (1st) about 19 August 1782 in Savannah MARY “POLLY” WILSON. She was probably the Mrs. Mary Spencer, wife of William Spencer, who died about 22 March 1792 in Savannah. William Henry Spencer married (2nd) MRS. MARY (___) WHITTENDEL about 14 January 1793 in Savannah. She was the widow of James Whittendel. She died 8 September 1801 in Savannah. William Henry Spencer married (3rd) LUCRETIA JENKINS 21 October 1802 in Savannah. Lucretia was born about 1772 in Savannah and was buried there 13 September 1848. Children of William Henry Spencer (order uncertain):6 i. ELIZABETH3 SPENCER, apparently born by 9 February 1803 (if she was the “affectionate sister” left behind by Maria Spencer, see below); named in the will of her father. ii. MARIA SPENCER, born about October 1797 (from her age at death); died 9 February 1803 in Savannah. 25. iii. JAMES JOHN WHITTENDEL SPENCER, born about 1801; d. between 13 October and 5 December 1836; m. ELIZABETH LANGLEY 18 February 1823 in Chatham Co., GA. 6 Most likely his two daughters were by his first and/or second wives and his three sons were by his third wife. When [13.ii] Maria Spencer died, apparently her only sibling was a sister; thus, her brothers were probably born after her death.
