JOIN TODAY – How Effective Is Your Saab’S Pollen filter? SAAB SEPT/OCT 2007 • ISSUE 5/2007 • £5.00 DRIVERThe Magazine of the Saab Owners Club of Great Britain Limited JOIN TODAY – www.saabclub.co.uk How effective is your Saab’s pollen filter? Compare a Saab Genuine Carbon Pollen Filter with one from another “aftermarket” brand and you’ll find that there’s a bucket full of differences.Whereas some pollen filters are a paper-based product, arguably similar in appearance to household kitchen roll, Saab Genuine Carbon Pollen Filters combine electrostatic fabric with a filter fabric, covered by active carbon pellets. This combination is a highly effective barrier to pollen, dust, fungus and also hazardous substances such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and ozone – effectively trapping 95% of particles down to 2 thousandths of a millimetre in size. What this all means is that the air inside the car is 20 times cleaner than the air outside. Another genuine reason to always fit Saab Genuine Parts. Box 600 SE 40530 Gothenburg, Sweden All rights reserved No part of this master thesis may be reproduced without prior written permission from the authors Acknowledgements First of all, we would like to thank our supervisor Evangelos Bourelos for his patience and effort in providing us with meaningful advice throughout these months of intense research. We would also like to express our appreciation and gratitude towards all our respondents who have allocated their valuable time to help us interpret this interesting case. Your passion, knowledge and commitment guided us through this journey, and we have enjoyed every single day of it. Finally, we would like to thank our peer students and all the people close to us for your support during our years of university studies. Without you, this would not have been possible. ABSTRACT This master thesis is addressing the case of Saab Automobile AB, creating a full historical reconstruction using primarily extensive quotes derived from semi-structured interviews with former Saab employees and other relevant actors. The aim is to depict and discuss the roots behind the company’s historically unique capabilities and its trajectory towards failure, together with the influence of General Motors’ ownership in this detrimental process.

  • 92-96 Fakta, Page 1

  • SAAB FORMULA JUNIOR a Unique Chapter in Swedish Motoring History
SAAB FORMULA JUNIOR A unique chapter in Swedish motoring history. Compiled by Nils-Gunnar Svensson and Ulf G Andersson. Translation by Gunnar K Johansson and Ray Beaufoy. A Swedish formula Junior racing car, manufactured in one of the country’s automotive plants was something completely unique in 1960 and unprecedented in Swedish motoring history. From un-published photos, Saab documents, newspapers articles of the time and, above all, discussions with as many people as possible that were involved in this project we have strived to create an accurate account of the historical events related to Saabs two Formula Junior cars manufactured in Trollhättan. THE DEVELOPMENT WORK The development of SAAB’s Formula Junior was a direct follow up of the competition activities once initiated by Rolf Mellde (head of the test department) with the Saab 92. Without successful competition activities started by Mellde and Landbü in 1949 and resultant competition success, the development and testing of a completely new car in such a concentrated and effective manner would not have been possible. Through competition success with the Saab 92 and 93, Saab´s management began to understand that there was high PR -value to be gained by using competition successes in company advertisements and sales brochures. It was also obvious that Rolf Mellde wholeheartedly gave support in promoting the advantages of front wheel drive. During the entire 1950´s, Rolf Mellde played a major part in competition activities and, as we now know, he also achieved considerable success. 1 The development of the Sonett 1 was further step in that direction, but unfortunately, due to changes in classification and tuning requirements, there was only a short future for this type of pure racing sports car.

  • Saabism and Saabists: a Digital Ethnographic Analysis of Saab Culture
Paper Saabism and Saabists A digital ethnographic analysis of Saab culture by Ico Maly© (Tilburg University) [email protected] August 2017 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. In this paper, I wish to examine the online-offline communicative and semiotic practices of one such “less conspicuous” social group: the Saabists. Based on long term digital ethnographic research I will provide a description and analysis of how Saabists discursively and semiotically construct identity on-and offline in a transnational niche. Saabists, I will argue, are a translocal and polycentric micro-population sharing a ‘culture’ – Saab culture or Saabism - and an ‘identity’. I clearly argue in favor of a materialistic approach to identity and group formation. The reasons therefore are evident: Identity should not only be understood in a certain chronotope, but is also embedded in ‘infrastructure’, what Arnaut, Karrebaek and Spotti (2016) call Poiesis-infrastructures. Keywords: Micro-population, culture, (digital) ethnography, Saab and Saabism.
