The New SAAB Special One-Third More Horsepower for One-Tenth More Money - That's the Story Behind the New SAAB Special The New SAAB Special One-third more horsepower for one-tenth more money - that's the story behind the new SAAB Special. But that's only the beginning. At the left you see the basic power plant of the SAAB Special. It has the same engine as the SAAB Monte- Carlo 850 (SAAB has won two Monte-Carlo rallies back to back). This amazing motor is the key to the SAAB Special and its performance, its all-around value. This engine develops more than one horsepower for every cubic inch of piston displacement. That's far more horsepower per volume than the average for other pas- senger cars. Not even high-powered sports cars and racers can better this ratio without going to much hig- her revs per minute than the SAAB engine. Result: An engine unusually light, unusually compact when you consider its torque, its horsepower output. In order to let all this power in this small package breathe freely, SAAB has added one carburetor per cy- linder - again more than any passenger car, more than most sports cars. With one-third more horsepower, the SAAB Special engine gives you totally effortless cruising, fast get- aways, no gear changes on most hills, and super-safe passing acceleration. When you team the extra power margin to the SAAB's front wheel drive maneuverability and roadability, you arrive at a vehicle that can get in and out of tight spots, pull you out of trouble spots like no other passenger sedan. In addition to the new engine, there's another surprise under the hood of the new SAAB Special: the separate oil lubrication system shown at the lower left. In the SAAB Special, you never add oil to the gasoline. Rather, a large oil container under the hood feeds just the right amount of lubricating oil to all the surfaces in The new SAAB Special delivers one-third motion within the motor. A calibrated metering pump more horsepower - at one-tenth more price. measures out the precise amount and forces it under pressure to the very spot lubrication is required. It is no longer necessa ry to work out gasoline to oil ratios in the fueling; your service station attendant simply checks the oil level by sight - doesn't even have to pull out and wipe the dip stick! With one-third more hors- es under the hood. a car must come on pretty strong in the braking department. too. The SAAB Special gives you Lockheed disc brakes up front (shown at right). large brake drums in the rear. Among racing drivers and sports car en- thusiasts. disc brakes are widely acclaimed as being more positive and fade-free The high powered engine of the SAAB Spe- than any other type. Of course. the exclusive SAAB dual diagonal able in the SAAB Special Station Wagon as braking system enables drivers to come to a sure and well. straightforward stop even in the event of a hydraulic leak which would incapacitate ordinary braking systems. Sure-fire performers in the curves or during the all-out stops: the competition-type racing tires which come as standard equipment in all SAAB Specials. All the features of the SAAB Special - the additional horsepower. the triple carburetors. the oil metering system. the disc brakes. and the competition tires - are now available in the 7-passenger station wagon as well as the sedan. These extra features truly make the SAAB Special Sta- tion Wagon the most outstanding value in combining the performance characteristics of a sports car with the roominess and good sense of an all-around family car. What makes the SAAB Special such a sensational value in any body type? For one thing. it shares all the exclu- sive features pulling for the basic SAAB: FRONTWHEEL DRIVE for outstanding traction and roadability. up- front engine for stability and safety. heavy gauge Swe- dish steel. engineering to aircraft standards. • 92-96 Fakta, Page 1

  • SAAB FORMULA JUNIOR a Unique Chapter in Swedish Motoring History
SAAB FORMULA JUNIOR A unique chapter in Swedish motoring history. Compiled by Nils-Gunnar Svensson and Ulf G Andersson. Translation by Gunnar K Johansson and Ray Beaufoy. A Swedish formula Junior racing car, manufactured in one of the country’s automotive plants was something completely unique in 1960 and unprecedented in Swedish motoring history. From un-published photos, Saab documents, newspapers articles of the time and, above all, discussions with as many people as possible that were involved in this project we have strived to create an accurate account of the historical events related to Saabs two Formula Junior cars manufactured in Trollhättan. THE DEVELOPMENT WORK The development of SAAB’s Formula Junior was a direct follow up of the competition activities once initiated by Rolf Mellde (head of the test department) with the Saab 92. Without successful competition activities started by Mellde and Landbü in 1949 and resultant competition success, the development and testing of a completely new car in such a concentrated and effective manner would not have been possible. Through competition success with the Saab 92 and 93, Saab´s management began to understand that there was high PR -value to be gained by using competition successes in company advertisements and sales brochures. It was also obvious that Rolf Mellde wholeheartedly gave support in promoting the advantages of front wheel drive. During the entire 1950´s, Rolf Mellde played a major part in competition activities and, as we now know, he also achieved considerable success. 1 The development of the Sonett 1 was further step in that direction, but unfortunately, due to changes in classification and tuning requirements, there was only a short future for this type of pure racing sports car.

  • Saabism and Saabists: a Digital Ethnographic Analysis of Saab Culture
Paper Saabism and Saabists A digital ethnographic analysis of Saab culture by Ico Maly© (Tilburg University) [email protected] August 2017 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/ Saabism and Saabists A digital ethnographic analysis of Saab culture Abstract: Both Simmel and Goffman were deeply persuaded that the big things in society, in actual observable reality are made up of a dynamic and complex system of interlocking and interacting small things. In this paper, I wish to examine the online-offline communicative and semiotic practices of one such “less conspicuous” social group: the Saabists. Based on long term digital ethnographic research I will provide a description and analysis of how Saabists discursively and semiotically construct identity on-and offline in a transnational niche. Saabists, I will argue, are a translocal and polycentric micro-population sharing a ‘culture’ – Saab culture or Saabism - and an ‘identity’. I clearly argue in favor of a materialistic approach to identity and group formation. The reasons therefore are evident: Identity should not only be understood in a certain chronotope, but is also embedded in ‘infrastructure’, what Arnaut, Karrebaek and Spotti (2016) call Poiesis-infrastructures. Keywords: Micro-population, culture, (digital) ethnography, Saab and Saabism. Compare a Saab Genuine Carbon Pollen Filter with one from another “aftermarket” brand and you’ll find that there’s a bucket full of differences.Whereas some pollen filters are a paper-based product, arguably similar in appearance to household kitchen roll, Saab Genuine Carbon Pollen Filters combine electrostatic fabric with a filter fabric, covered by active carbon pellets. This combination is a highly effective barrier to pollen, dust, fungus and also hazardous substances such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and ozone – effectively trapping 95% of particles down to 2 thousandths of a millimetre in size. What this all means is that the air inside the car is 20 times cleaner than the air outside. Another genuine reason to always fit Saab Genuine Parts.
