Belgium Page 1 of 10 Belgium Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2003 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor February 25, 2004 Belgium is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarch who plays a mainly symbolic role. The Council of Ministers (Cabinet), led by the Prime Minister, holds office as long as it retains the confidence of the lower house of the bicameral Parliament. Parliamentary elections held on May 18 were free and fair and resulted in a four-party coalition government. The country is a federal state with several levels of government, including national, regional (Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels), and community (Flemish, Francophone, and German). The judiciary is independent. The civilian authorities maintained effective control of all security forces. The Federal Police are responsible for internal security and nationwide law and order. Local Federal Police branches operated in all 196 police districts. There were no reports that security forces committed human rights abuses. The country, which had a population of approximately 10.3 million, was highly industrialized, with a large private sector and limited government participation in industry. The primary exports were machinery and equipment. The economy grew an estimated 0.8 percent during the year and provided a high standard of living for most citizens; there was little economic disparity. The Government generally respected the human rights of its citizens, and the law and the judiciary provided effective means of dealing with individual instances of abuse. Societal violence against religious minorities was a problem. Trafficking in women and children remained problems, which the Government took steps to address. -

Beyond the Dutroux Affair the Reality of Protected Child Abuse and Snuff
Beyond the Dutroux Affair The reality of protected child abuse and snuff networks the victim-witnesses | the investigators | the accused | the apparently assassinated Warning: The information in this article is not suited for anyone below the age of 18, as it involves extreme sexual violence against children. A certain amount of normally-illegal visual evidence (it is censored) has been included. Important notes, three years after 1This site continues to be visited by Belgian and Dutch Justice ) departments, just as many major news outlets (who won't publish on the affair naturally). There's never been one complaint about the pictures used. 2Except for the John DeCamp ) information (for now) and a few newspaper-reported cases, all America-based sources to compare the Dutroux Affair with have been deleted. Not reliable. 3For all the people who have ) faith in the alternative media: Alex Jones only published this article (as a Click to watch an intro to this article not news item) on Prison Planet made by ISGP. De Bonvoisin has been after paying him $500. And named by more witnesses, by the way. only then did several other major "alternative" sites pick it up. But soon thereafter, the amount of money offered didn't seem to matter anymore. Funny, as all these sites never get enough of the John DeCamp story. 4On the internet you can find several prominent skeptical articles about ) the only witness who ever went public: X1. It's obvious that these articles still have a huge capacity to seed doubt. Just know that all of the claims they make have been based on manipulations, as this article will show. -
Benoît Rihoux1, Audrey Vandeleene1, Lieven De Winter1, Pierre
Belgium (2014 – published 2015) Benoît Rihoux1, Audrey Vandeleene1, Lieven De Winter1, Pierre Baudewyns1, Serge Deruette2 1 Centre de Science Politique et de Politique Comparée (CESPOL), Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium; 2Université de Mons, Belgium INTRODUCTION The year 2014 was particularly dense, with simultaneous regional, parliamentary and European Parliament elections on 25 May. This was followed by a relatively short government formation process towards an unprecedented ‘Swedish’ federal cabinet. The electoral cycle took place in the context of a still quite difficult socioeconomic situation and ethnolinguistic tensions at the elite level. ELECTION REPORT Regional Elections: 25 May 2014 Most parties did not present a separate regional and federal manifesto (De Winter and Van Wynsberghe forthcoming), therefore blurring regional and federal issues. Remarkably, following the electoral results at the regional level (Blaise et al. 2014b), the regional government formations brought regionalist parties in power in three of the five regional/community governments. In Flanders, the N-VA became the predominant party in the Flemish region, replacing the CD&V, and thus legitimately claimed the leadership of the formation of the Flemish executive, which resulted in the formation of the Bourgeois I government with the N-VA, the CD&V and the Open VLD. At the Walloon elections, of the three incumbent coalition parties (PS, CdH and Ecolo) only the latter lost heavily, with the fourth traditional party (MR) regaining some ground, as well as the newcomers PTB and PP. The new Walloon government was formed as a left-centre coalition of the PS and CdH, under the leadership of P. Magnette (PS), while the executive of the Francophone community government was headed by the incumbent R. -
Belgian Polities in 1985 « No T Urning Back » *
Belgian Polities in 1985 « No T urning Back » * by Jozef SMITS, Licentiate in Polltical Science. * Belgian politica! life in 1985 was completely dominated by the parliamentary elections, for the Christian-Democrat and Liberal coalition under the leadership of Wilfried Martens (CVP) was in its last year. The Martens V government almost succeeded in completing the parliamentary term as it bas intended. They Heysel drama caused an unexpected rupture in the cabinet, so elections were set for October, while normally they would have been held in December. The electoral battle was completely dominated by the three major politica! families : on the one side, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals, who defended the recovery policy of the previous four years based on a transfer of financial resources from individuals to businesses ; on the other side were the Socialists, who stressed the negative effects of the « income cutback » policy. The polarization of the electoral campaign was symbolized the most clearly by the campaign of the largest majority party. With the slogan Geen Ommekeer (No Turning Back) and with outgoing Premier Martens as the figurehead, the CVP tried to com municate to the electorate that there was no alternative to the unpopular socio-economie recovery policy and that this policy had to be continued in order to solve the country's problems definitively. Against expectations and to its own astonishment, the majority emerged strengthened from the ballot box. Consequently, nothing stood in the way of a new edition of Martens V, and on 28 November, the new Christian-Democrat/Liberal government was formed. Wilfried Martens again had the leadership of • A part of the information given in this article is taken from the article written by M. -
