Please contact the Austrian Embassy in the country you live in for entrance regulations prior to your departure . You will have to apply for an entry visa to at the nearest Austrian consulate before you travel to Austria. The issue of a student visa may be a lengthy process, so students should plan ahead as much as possible.

Please note that you are self-responsible for your visa!

EEA nationals and Swiss students do not need to apply for visa, but need to register separately. For more detailed information, please refer to the chapter: “Important information for EEA nationals and Swiss students”, page 16.

Accommodation

General information

Besides the admission procedure and the formalities of visa application it is also necessary to find suitable accommodation. There are various options for you depending on your individual needs and life style:

Student hostels/dormitories

Non-Austrian students can choose among the whole range of student hostels in Vienna. Some of these care for the non-Austrian students’ needs more than others: e.g. the student hostel of the Afro-Asian Institute offers accommodation in 64 single and 4 double rooms throughout the year and offers prayer rooms for various denominations (www.aai-wien.at ).

The Austrian Exchange Service (ÖAD) also helps non-Austrian students find suitable and affordable accommodation with its housing service. The main goal from the OeAD Housing Office (a non-profit organisation) is to accommodate international students in Austria in an ideal way. As an indispensable partner for the universities and universities of applied sciences in the field of international students’ mobility, the OeAD – Housing Office provides fully furnished rooms during the academic year as well as during the summer months (July – September). Further information and application details are available on the website: www.housing.oead.at www.housing.oead.at www.akademikerhilfe.at www.oejab.at www.wihast.at

6

You can also choose among the other student hostels in Vienna. The costs are between € 180 and € 250 for a single room and € 150 to € 200 for a double room. Lists of all the hostels with detailed descriptions of furniture, rent and application formalities are available at www.studentenfoerderung.at , www.studieren.at and www.cycamp.at

Flat/apartment sharing

A very common alternative to living in a student hostel is sharing a flat/apartment with other students. These are websites where you can search for a suitable place: www.wohnenboerse.at and www.jobwohnen.at

Renting a flat/apartment

Before signing a rent contract it is advisable to gather information about your rights and duties and to have the rental contract checked by an expert. Looking for a flat can be time-consuming and should be well planned. If you commission an estate agency with the search you have to pay commission (usually several monthly rents) for this service. Take into account that deposits might have to be paid as well as payments for previous investments.

The Housing Office of the Austrian Exchange Service provides flats and rooms in halls of residence for students receiving ÖAD grants, Erasmus students, visiting professors and guests. Should you wish to have a room at a student-residence procured, you have to remit € 400, - (reservation deposit) by the

ÖAD - Österreichischer Austauschdienst Wirtschaftsreferat Alserstraße 4/1/1/3 1090 Wien T: +43 1 4277 28153 F: +43 1 4277 28150

After leaving the student residence the reservation deposit will be returned to you. On receipt of the completed application form, you will be informed about the address and location of your student residence. Usually double-rooms at an average price between € 180,- up to € 285,- per month are available.

Private accommodation can also be found here: www.vienna4rent.com/v4r.cgi?lang=en
