Statement and Statistics President William J. Fritz Grounded in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences, the College of Staten Island is committed to the highest standards in learning, teaching, research, scholarship, and service. As the only public institution of higher education in the Borough, and as a senior campus of The City University of , the College has provided access to excellence in higher education since 1956. The College is dedicated to helping its students fulfill their creative and educational aspirations through competitive and rigorous undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. We embrace the strength of our diversity, foster civic-mindedness, and nurture responsible citizens for our city, state, country, and the world.

The College of Staten Island was created in 1976 through the merger of Staten Island Community College (est.1956) and Richmond College (est.1965). In 1994, the College of Staten Island was relocated to its present site in Willowbrook. We continue to grow and garner national recognition for our academic programs and the value of education we provide our students through our nationally recognized award-winning faculty. Some examples include Pultizer Prize winning Faculty; #1 in the Nation Military Friendly School; #3 in the Nation Military Friendly Spouse School; Designated a Purple Heart University, the first in NYC; the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) designated the College of Staten Island as a Federal Depository Library (FDL); #6 in the Nation on CollegeNet’s Social Mobility Index; Top 15% of average alumni salary by PayScales College Salary Report.

In fall 2018, the College issued its five year strategic plan, Opportunity to Ascend. The six strategic priorities in the plan – Student Success, Global Engagement, Borough Stewardship, Destination Campus, Scholarship Driven Education and Resource Management – will inform the major decisions and directions that the College will take through the year 2022. Opportunity to Ascend is the result of inclusive campus-wide consultation that began in the fall of 2015.

As we transition to a destination campus for thousands of student who are striving to improve their lives and the world, our new Strategic Plan will chart the continuing upward arc of the College. Our 204 acre park-like campus, with modern student resident halls, tree-lined walkways, open grassy fields, great lawns, flowers and wildlife, is the largest site for a college in New York City. The College strives to be a preferred choice institution where students, faculty, and staff will tell our story to various stakeholders. We intend to foster a campus culture that supports and reflects the best of CSI, and cultivate relationships, both on and off campus. We will enhance the physical beauty and natural surroundings through the preservation and improvement of the campus infrastructure, facilities, and safety features.

The College is fully committed to advancing its role as a “Steward of Place” through direct, two-way interaction with the Staten Island community through development, exchange, and application of knowledge, information and expertise for mutual benefit in such areas as health and safety initiatives, educational partnerships and economic and career/workforce development.

Reflecting its dynamic growth, the college recently created its first academic schools: the School of Business, School of Education, and the School of Health Sciences. Additionally, CSI expanded its institutional footprint within the borough by establishing CSI St. George, an extension of our Willowbrook campus offering classroom instruction in the burgeoning North Shore area of Staten Island.
