2001-02 CUNY ATHLETIC ACADEMIC & ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE CONFERENCE REVIEW HUNTER WINS THE COMMISSIONER’S CUP BACK With a summer to reflect upon missed opportunities, the entire Hunter College athletic family rallied to take back the CUNYAC 2001-02 TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS Commissioner’s Cup from the College of Staten Island. The Hawks WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY................................................HUNTER won by the largest margin in three seasons 23 points (129-106). MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY.....................................................HUNTER Hunter was victorious for the fourth time in the five seasons of the WOMEN’S TENNIS...............................................................HUNTER prestigious award by beating CSI head-to-head in three crucial WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL......................................................HUNTER CUNYAC championships. By topping the Dolphins in women’s tennis, MEN’S SOCCER.......................................................................YORK women’s swimming and diving, and women’s softball, a fifteen-point WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING........................................HUNTER swing, Hunter assured itself of regaining the award. The Hawks set MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING..................................STATEN ISLAND the tone for the season early, winning the first four events and the WOMEN’S BASKETBALL......................................................HUNTER first two seasonal championships on the CUNYAC calendar, netting MEN’S BASKETBALL................................................STATEN ISLAND almost half of their eventual points. MEN’S SOCCER............................................................MANHATTAN Despite a harried fall, when the school’s gymnasium was WOMEN’S BASKETBALL..............................................MANHATTAN used as a staging area for workers at the former World Trade MEN’S BASKETBALL..............................................KINGSBOROUGH MEN’S BASEBALL...................................................................BRONX Center site, the teams prospered. BMCC, which is located six blocks away from Ground Zero, didn’t have use of its gym until mid-October. Besides winning the two fall championships- CUNYAC COMMUNITY COLLEGE men’s soccer and women’s volleyball, the men’s basketball team played in their fifth straight CUNY final. Meanwhile, the COMMISSIONER’S CUP POINTS 2001-02 women’s hoops squad refused to let another school hold the PL. SCHOOL POINTS five-year old trophy. 1. MANHATTAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE 35 Kingsborough topped BMCC in that men’s basketball final 2. QUEENSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE 15 for the third consecutive time and Bronx beat Queensborough 2. bRONX COMMUNITY COLLEGE 15 in the baseball championship game, played on the Broncos 4. KINGSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE 10 home field.
