  • Tasmanian Tertiary Foraminifera
Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania, Volume 108 (ms. received 16.3.1973) TASMANIAN TERTIARY FORAMINIFERA Part 1. Textulariina, Miliolina, Nodosariacea by Patrick G. Quilty West Australian Petroleum Pty. Limited, Perth, W.A. (with four plates) ABSTRACT Foraminifera of the Suborders Textulariina and Miliolina and the Superfamily Nodosariacea are recorded from samples of all known Tasmanian marine Oligo-Miocene sections. Thirteen species of agglutinated foraminifera are identified specifically and one category is left in open nomenclature. Thirty species of porcellanous foraminifera (including CrenuZostomina banksi n. gen., n. sp.) are recorded and there are eight open categories. The Nodosariacea is represented by 63 identified species (including Lagena tasmaniae n. sp.) and 10 categories in open nomenclature. Information on each species includes original citation, synonymy of Australian identifications, remarks where necessary and occurrence and age in Tasmania. All identified forms are figured. INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The stratigraphy of the Tasmanian Tertiary Marine succession has been reviewed by Quilty (1972). The results noted in that paper are based on foraminiferal studies conducted at the University of Tasmania. Localities, sample numbers etc., mentioned here are detailed further in Quilty (op. cit.) and this paper should be read in company with that paper. This paper is the first of a projected series of three papers documenting the Tasmanian Tertiary foraminifera. Classification adopted in these papers follows closely that proposed by Loeblich and Tappan (1964a) and reviewed by them (1964b) but differs in minor respects which will be indicated where necessary. Quilty (op. cit.) noted that the first record of Tasmanian Tertiary foraminifera was by Goddard and Jensen (1907).

M. 1Department of Applied Geology and 2Department of Geology University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai 600 025, India Abstract: The Arabian Sea is one of the most productive regions of the world ocean and hence has been the focus of attention of micropaleontologists from all over the world. A 5.4-m gravity core was retrieved onboard the CRV Sagar Kanya from off Goa, Arabian Sea, and its uppermost 50 cm examined for foraminifers. The systematic paleontology of textulariid and miliolid foraminifera from this core segment is presented with relevant remarks and comments on their ecology and distribution. Keywords: Foraminifera; Taxonomy; Textulariids; Miliolids; Ecology; Arabian Sea. Introduction: The seasonal reversal of the winds caused by the alternate heating and cooling of the Tibet Plateau controls the circulation in the Arabian Sea. It has, therefore, been extensively studied with respect to diverse aspects of both benthic and planktic foraminifers. Between June and September (summer), offshore Ekman transport and intense upwelling along the Oman and Somalia margins (Shi et al., 2000) are caused by the strong south-westerly winds that blow across the Arabian Sea. This upwelling process brings cold, nutrient-rich waters from a few hundred meters depth to the surface and considerably increases the biological productivity in the euphotic zone, making the Arabian Sea one of the most productive regions of the world ocean (Qasim, 1977).

  • Molecular Species Delimitation and Biogeography of Canadian Marine Planktonic Crustaceans
Molecular Species Delimitation and Biogeography of Canadian Marine Planktonic Crustaceans by Robert George Young A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Integrative Biology Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Robert George Young, March, 2016 ABSTRACT MOLECULAR SPECIES DELIMITATION AND BIOGEOGRAPHY OF CANADIAN MARINE PLANKTONIC CRUSTACEANS Robert George Young Advisors: University of Guelph, 2016 Dr. Sarah Adamowicz Dr. Cathryn Abbott Zooplankton are a major component of the marine environment in both diversity and biomass and are a crucial source of nutrients for organisms at higher trophic levels. Unfortunately, marine zooplankton biodiversity is not well known because of difficult morphological identifications and lack of taxonomic experts for many groups. In addition, the large taxonomic diversity present in plankton and low sampling coverage pose challenges in obtaining a better understanding of true zooplankton diversity. Molecular identification tools, like DNA barcoding, have been successfully used to identify marine planktonic specimens to a species. However, the behaviour of methods for specimen identification and species delimitation remain untested for taxonomically diverse and widely-distributed marine zooplanktonic groups. Using Canadian marine planktonic crustacean collections, I generated a multi-gene data set including COI-5P and 18S-V4 molecular markers of morphologically-identified Copepoda and Thecostraca (Multicrustacea: Hexanauplia) species. I used this data set to assess generalities in the genetic divergence patterns and to determine if a barcode gap exists separating interspecific and intraspecific molecular divergences, which can reliably delimit specimens into species. I then used this information to evaluate the North Pacific, Arctic, and North Atlantic biogeography of marine Calanoida (Hexanauplia: Copepoda) plankton.

  • Morphological Adaptations of Pearlfish (Carapidae) to Their Various Habitats
11 Morphological Adaptations of Pearlfish (Carapidae) to their various Habitats Eric Parmentier and Pierre Vandewalle Eric Parmentier Laboratory of Functional and Evolutionary Morphology, Institut de Chimie, Bat. B6, Université de Liège, B-4000 Sart-Tilman, Liège, Belgium e-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION One of the most stunning aspects of the living world is the diversity of organism adaptations to a multitude of situations, often unexpected. Coral environments present a remarkable biodiversity in which there are numerous examples of associations among animals. Among those involving a fish and an invertebrate host, the anemonefish (Amphiprion sp., Pomacentridae) is doubtless the most well known (e.g., Mader, 1987; Bauchot, 1992; Elliott and Mariscal, 1996) although some Hexagrammidae can also have the same kind of association (Elliott, 1992). These fish are capable of seeking refuge between the sea anemones tentacles without being attacked by nematocysts. Depending on the species involved, these relationships can be of commensal (Elliott, 1992; Mariscal, 1996), mutual (Fautin, 1991; Godwin, 1992) or parasitic (Allen, 1972). Other fish use the mantle of certain bivalves as a shelter: Cyclopteridae Liparis inquilinus and Gadidae Urophyciss chuss in the scallop Planopecten magellanicus, Apogonidae Astrapogon alutus in the mesogasteropod Strombus pugilis (Able, 1973; Markle et al. 1982; Reed, 1992). Other fishes like Gobiidae live intimately in massive sponges (Tyler and Böhlke, 1972) whereas cer- tain Gobiesocidae live in association with sea urchins (Dix, 1969; Schoppe and Werding, 1996; Patzner, 1999). Another remarkable example is that of a Carapidae fish (Para- canthopterygians, Ophidiiformes) known as the pearlfish. The origin of this name was the discovery of dead carapid fish, paralysed and completely covered in mother-of-pearl in the inner face of the bivalves of certain oysters (Ballard, 1991).
