    Statistical Analysis Marriage Nullity Cases in the United States of America from 2016-2018 Introduction Over three years have passed since the reform of the process for the declaration of the nullity of marriage legislated by the Motu proprio Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus and Mitis et misericors Iesus has gone into effect. Due to the novelty of the Processus brevior coram Episcopo, there is much interest in the way it is being used. Several have already produced statistical studies. There are the two studies for the Ibero- American tribunals.1 In addition, the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland published in its 2019 Newsletter a statistical analysis for Tribunal activity in 2017.2 There is also the periodical Proceedings of the Canon Law Society of America, which began in 2017 to published the statistics for the briefer process.3 Scope and Method The present study seeks to analyze the statistics regarding the first instance activity of ecclesiastical Tribunals in the United States of America from 2016 through 2018. While some of above-mentioned studies relied heavily on reports of the Central Office of Statistics of the Church, the raw data for this study was gathered exclusively from the Annual Reports on the State and Activity of the Tribunal submitted to the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. 4 Certainly this choice placed some limitations on the data intake; however, the report provides a unique data set including the number of appeals lodged by the defender of the bond. Parish Email: [email protected] May 2, 2021 Sacred Relics Of The Saints: Treasures Of The Church On Saturday, May 15th, the faithful have the oppor- tunity to venerate the sacred remains of the Church’s heroes. Father Carlos Martins, a Custos Reliquiarum (ecclesiastically-appointed curate of relics), will return to Minnesota in April with a Vatican exhibit of more than 150 sacred relics. Immensely popular, it is high- lighted by some of the largest remaining fragments of the Wood of the True Cross in the world and a piece of the Veil that belonged to the Blessed Virgin. Each exposition begins with a presentation on relics that provides the catechetical and spiritual basis for the veneration that follows. The teaching presents the basic Gospel message: God wants to be encountered; He touches us through the lives and the sacred re- mains of His saints. “God never disappoints ... he always ‘shows up,’” remarks Fr. Martins. “There are healings at every exposition. Hun- dreds, perhaps even thousands, have been reported. Spectacular ones. Attendees have reported cancer, heart dis- ease, tumors, osteoporosis, physical deformities, etc., disappear immediately and completely.” Though a great num- ber of miracles have been physical (the exhibit’s website lists a sample of these), he admits that the most spectacu- lar is the healing of faith, where a new and deeper relationship with God and His saints are formed in the faithful.

Administrative Bodies: Pope has supreme authority. College of Bishops = all bishops in communion with Pope, also has supreme authority (cannot act without Pope). College of Cardinals assist Pope collegially; obligation to cooperate closely with Pope; prerogative to elect Pope; presided over by Dean, who is ‘first among equals’. Synod of Bishops (representatives of bishops throughout the world) discusses matters presented to it by Pope and makes recommendations. I would like to now, in the half hour that remains to address the question of new grounds of nullity introduced by some tribunals and I will just take up three today. One is called, the ground, the Intention against the Good of the Spouses, against the bónum cónjugum . The second one is called Error of Law and the third one is Invalid Convalidation. And the background of which I take up the question of three so-called new grounds of nullity is my presentation yesterday regarding the collaboration of the Apostolic Tribunals, Roman Rota and the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura in the care for the correct administration of justice in the Church. With regard to the grounds of nullity of marriage, the rule which guides absolutely the Apostolic Signatura is the discipline of the Universal Church articulated in the Code of Canon Law for the Latin Church and the Code of canons for the Eastern Churches as those grounds are interpreted in Rotal jurisprudence or maybe a more accurate word are “applied” in Rotal jurisprudence. It must be clear from the start that the only grounds of nullity of marriage are those established by Universal Church discipline—that is those named in the Code of Canon Law. Book IV of the 1983 Code of Canon Law, title VII, chapter V and the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, title XVI, chapter VII, article VI govern the canonical form of marriage. In many ways the provisions of the two codes are similar; in some instances, however, they differ. Both the similarities and the differences have pastoral consequences, especially in cases of mixed marriages or in territories where a hierarchical organization of various Oriental Catholic churches sui iuris does not exist. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the canonical form of marriage by comparing the Latin and Oriental canonical legislations and analyzing the pastoral consequences that arise when laws concerning canonical form of marriage are applied in specific areas, especially in light of recent political and social changes in Eastern Europe.     TRANSLATOR’S NOTE: This is a translation of the Decree of the Congressio of the Apostolic Signatura, written in Latin, and issued on April 18, 2008, in Rome. The Congressio is a panel of the full bench of the Signatura (the “Plenary”), and it screens appeals for review of decisions by lower bodies, including the Congregation for the Clergy. This decree is the Congressio’s decision regarding the canonical appeal by the parishioners of St Anselm, Sudbury, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, to the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, against the suppression of their parish. The parish of St Anselm was set up in the year 1963 with a small territory, partially in the town of “Sudbury” and partially in the town of “Framingham.” In the year 2000 the Rev. Pastor was nominated to simultaneously have care for a community of the deaf in the town of “Framingham,” which community in the year 2002 was transferred to the seat of the parish. The parishioners took care to adapt and to renovate the buildings of the parish in the year 2003. Moreover His Excellency the new Archbishop of Boston, have heard among other things from the college of consultors present and acting through the Presbyteral Council (cf. canon 501, ¶ 2), on January 9, 2004 announced to Christ’s faithful of the archdiocese the need to reduce the number of parishes in the entire archdiocese, especially because of the changed demographic condition, the diminished number of priests and the very bad economic condition of some parishes and of the archdiocese itself.
