  • Thin-Thick Film Transitions on a Planar Solid Surface: a Density Functional Study *

PHYS. LETT. Vol. 27, No. 3 (2010) 037101 Thin-Thick Film Transitions on a Planar Solid Surface: A Density Functional Study * YU Yang-Xin(u养&)**, LI Ying-Feng(o=¸), ZHENG Yuan-Xiang(x远翔) State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084 (Received 29 October 2009) A weighted density functional theory is proposed to predict the surface tension and thin-thick film transition of a Lennard{Jones fluid on a planar solid surface. The underlying density functional theory for theLennard{ Jones fluid at low temperature is based on a modified fundamental measure theory for the hard-core repulsion, a Taylor expansion around zero-bulk-density for attraction, and a correlation term evaluated by the weighted density approximation with a weight function of the Heaviside step function. The predicted surface tension and thin-thick film transition agree well with the results from the Monte Carlo simulations, better than thosefrom alternative approaches. For the Ar/CO2 system, the prewetting line has been calculated. The predicted reduced surface critical temperature is about 0.97, and the calculated wetting temperature is below the triple-point temperature. This is in agreement with the experimental observation. • Script Crisis and Literary Modernity in China, 1916-1958 Zhong Yurou
Script Crisis and Literary Modernity in China, 1916-1958 Zhong Yurou Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Yurou Zhong All rights reserved ABSTRACT Script Crisis and Literary Modernity in China, 1916-1958 Yurou Zhong This dissertation examines the modern Chinese script crisis in twentieth-century China. It situates the Chinese script crisis within the modern phenomenon of phonocentrism – the systematic privileging of speech over writing. It depicts the Chinese experience as an integral part of a worldwide crisis of non-alphabetic scripts in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It places the crisis of Chinese characters at the center of the making of modern Chinese language, literature, and culture. It investigates how the script crisis and the ensuing script revolution intersect with significant historical processes such as the Chinese engagement in the two World Wars, national and international education movements, the Communist revolution, and national salvation. Since the late nineteenth century, the Chinese writing system began to be targeted as the roadblock to literacy, science and democracy. Chinese and foreign scholars took the abolition of Chinese script to be the condition of modernity. A script revolution was launched as the Chinese response to the script crisis. This dissertation traces the beginning of the crisis to 1916, when Chao Yuen Ren published his English article “The Problem of the Chinese Language,” sweeping away all theoretical oppositions to alphabetizing the Chinese script. This was followed by two major movements dedicated to the task of eradicating Chinese characters: First, the Chinese Romanization Movement spearheaded by a group of Chinese and international scholars which was quickly endorsed by the Guomingdang (GMD) Nationalist government in the 1920s; Second, the dissident Chinese Latinization Movement initiated in the Soviet Union and championed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the 1930s.

  • The Literary Field of Twentieth-Century China Chinese Worlds
The Literary Field of Twentieth-Century China Chinese Worlds Chinese Worlds publishes high-quality scholarship, research monographs, and source collections on Chinese history and society from 1900 into the next century. "Worlds" signals the ethnic, cultural, and political multiformity and regional diversity of China, the cycles of unity and division through which China's modern history has passed, and recent research trends toward regional studies and local issues. It also signals that Chineseness is not contained within territorial borders - overseas Chinese communities in all countries and regions are also "Chinese worlds". The editors see them as part of a political, economic, social, and cultural continuum that spans the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, South-East Asia, and the world. The focus of Chinese Worlds is on modern politics and society and history. It includes both history in its broader sweep and specialist monographs on Chinese politics, anthropology, political economy, sociology, education, and the social-science aspects of culture and religions. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms (RTK) is a classical Chinese historical novel by Luo Guanzhong. This paper establishes a research framework of analyzing the novel by utilizing coword and cluster analysis technology. At the beginning, we segment the full text of the novel, extracting the names of historical figures in the RTK novel. Based on the coword analysis, a social network of historical figures is constructed. We calculate several network features and enforce the cluster analysis. In addition, a modified clustering method using edge betweenness is proposed to improve the effect of clustering. Finally, both quantified and visualized results are displayed to confirm our approach. 1. Introduction ysis, cluster analysis, experiments, and the analysis of results. Conclusions are drawn in Section 6. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong, is generally considered to be one of the four great 2.

BUPLEURUM & TANG KUEI FORMULA XIAO YAO WAN FREE & EASY WANDERER PLUS FORMULA JIA WEI XIAO YAO SAN Bupleurum & Tang Kuei Formula (Xiao Yao Wan), and its most popular modification,Free & Easy Wanderer Plus ( Jia Wei Xiao Yao San), are the most commonly prescribed herbal formulas in the United States and Taiwan. The 900 year old classical formula, Bupleurum & Tang Kuei Formula (Xiao Yao Wan), comes from The Formulary of the Pharmacy Service for Benefiting the People in the Tai Ping Era (Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang) published in 1107. Both formulas are a modification of theShang Han Lun formula, Frigid Extremities Powder (Si Ni San), published nearly 900 years earlier. As is evident from the Modern Applications section below, these two formulas are among the most studied and versatile formulas in all of modern Chinese herbal medicine. GENERAL INDICATIONS Generally speaking, both these formulas are used to treat stress with an underlying spleen qi and blood deficiency. Because of the deficiency component, the stress is likely to become emphasized around menstruation, when less blood is available for circulation and for carrying the qi. Dysmenorrhea, PMS, and stress in general (for men and women alike) are the most common reasons for prescribing these formulas today. Children too, especially those who are under pressure to perform/ produce, benefit from taking these formulas. Stress will affect any areas of weakness, but particularly those ruled by the liver or middle burner. These include the chest, the abdomen, the entire digestive tract, and, of course, the blood, which is made in the middle burner and ruled by the liver.

Codes of Modernity: Infrastructures of Language and Chinese Scripts In an Age of Global Information Revolution Ulug Kuzuoglu Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 ©2018 Ulug Kuzuoglu All rights reserved ABSTRACT Codes of Modernity: Infrastructures of Language and Chinese Scripts in an Age of Global Information Revolution Ulug Kuzuoglu This dissertation explores the global history of Chinese script reforms—the effort to phoneticize Chinese language and/or simplify the writing system—from its inception in the 1890s to its demise in the 1980s. These reforms took place at the intersection of industrialization, colonialism, and new information technologies, such as alphabet-based telegraphy and breakthroughs in printing technologies. As these social and technological transformations put unprecedented pressure on knowledge management and the use of mental and clerical labor, many Chinese intellectuals claimed that learning Chinese characters consumed too much time and mental energy. Chinese script reforms, this dissertation argues, were an effort to increase speed in producing, transmitting, and accessing information, and thus meet the demands of the industrializing knowledge economy. The industrializing knowledge economy that this dissertation explores was built on and sustained by a psychological understanding of the human subject as a knowledge machine, and it was part of a global moment in which the optimization of labor in knowledge production was a key concern for all modernizing economies. While Chinese intellectuals were inventing new signs of inscription, American behavioral psychologists, Soviet psycho-economists, and Central Asian and Ottoman technicians were all experimenting with new scripts in order to increase mental efficiency and productivity.

  • Jian'an Literature Revisited: Poetic Dialogues in the Last Three
Jian’an Literature Revisited: Poetic Dialogues in the Last Three Decades of the Han Dynasty Hsiang-Lin Shih A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: David R. Knechtges, Chair Ching-Hsien Wang Zev Handel Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Asian Languages and Literature ©Copyright 2013 Hsiang-Lin Shih University of Washington Abstract Jian’an Literature Revisited: Poetic Dialogues in the Last Three Decades of the Han Dynasty Hsiang-Lin Shih Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor David R. Knechtges Department of Asian Languages and Literature The Jian’an period (196-220), which is best known through the fictionalized account in the Romance of the Three States, is also an important literary period. It is celebrated for its major writers such as Cao Cao, Cao Pi, Cao Zhi and Wang Can. Previous scholars have mainly been concerned with the life and poetry of an individual writer. In this dissertation, I attempt to take an approach that crosses the boundary between individual writers. I read Jian’an poems— including shi, fu, and yuefu—as the authors’ poetic dialogues with their contemporaries. This approach is based on the fact that the writers gathered at the court of Cao Cao and shared the language of poetry. Whether drinking together or living apart, they often engaged in a dialogue on a common topic through the medium of writing. Their topics range from travel, careers, expeditions, to merriment. Like the Athenian speechmakers in Plato’s “Symposium,” Jian’an writers also tried to impress, persuade, entertain and challenge one another in their poems.
