Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill AUGUST 19-25 them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from MONDAY Jgs 2:11-19 sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. It is a gift from the ancient Church 24 Ps 145:10-13, 17-18 of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a Jn 1:45-51 feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the “Dormition SUNDAY Is 66:18-21 of the Theotokos,” or the “Falling Asleep of the God‑bearer.” There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this 25 Ps 117:1-2 is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and Heb 12:5-7, 11-13 immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she Lk 13:22-30 who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty.     Saint Peter Chanel Saint Peter Chanel (Priest and Martyr) Saint Peter Chanel was born at Cuet (France) on 12 July 1803 and died on 28 April 1841 on Futuna (South-west Pacific Ocean). 28 April He was a diocesan priest for three years before joining the Society of Mary (Marists). He was sent out to evangelize the people on the Island of Futuna in the Pacific and is remembered for the mis- sionary work he carried out. He learned the local language of the people (there was no Internet or audio-visual materials available in his day) and at first he was very successful in wining converts for Christ. The local ruler Niuliki became jealous of Peter Chanel’s success (especially after Niuliki’s son and one of his friends became baptized) and so he sent some men to set upon Peter Chanel and club him to death. Saint Peter Chanel is honoured as the first martyr of the Church in Oceania. What lesson can we learn from Saint Peter Chanel’s life? What does the word evangelization mean? The biblical definition in Christianity of evangelization is the commitment to or act of publicly preaching (ministry) the Gospel with the intention to share the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. Saint Peter Chanel was so driven by the message of the Gospel that he lost his life because of his commitment to the teachings of Jesus. The challenge Saint Peter Chanel faced is not much different today. We still have to proclaim the message of the Gospel to people who may not want to hear it.

Pope Francis has made 2021 a special Holy Year honoring Saint Joseph, and we are grateful for this gift –– a reminder to all of us, especially spouse’s and par- ents, are called to a life of holiness amid struggles and challenges. We will bless the statue at the 5:00 PM Mass next Saturday, the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker. The statue will soon be placed near the Sacred Heart at the west exit doors of the church.
