Feltre Caldonazzo roadbike difficulty km total kilometers www.funactive.info ROADBIKE: AROUND THE DOLOMITES BICYCLE HOLIDAY A DAY BY DAY ACCOUNT OF THE ROUTE DAY 1: Arrival in Alta Pusteria (Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco) Individual arrival at the hotel in Alta Pusteria. Free, unguarded public car park near the hotel. DAY 2: Hochpustertal – Klausen/Chiusa; (approx. 105 km, ascent 1.650 m difference in altitude) The first part of your cycling day leads along the river Rienz which accompanies you to Valdaora before you cycle over the Furkelpass into the Ladin-speaking valley Gadertal and back to the main valley Pustertal into the Mi- chael-Pacher-town Brunico. After a short ascent on the sunny high plateau with its villages Falzes, Issengo and Terento you will get to the ruins of Mühlbacher Klause. Leaving the Pustertal you cycle on through the Eisacktal Valley and the apple-high plateau Naz-Sciaves into the ancient Bishop’s town Bressanone. Bressanone is worth to be visited! From here, the route runs along the river Etsch. From far cloister Säben is welcoming you soaring over the city of Chiusa, where you will spend the night. DAY 3: Klausen/Chiusa – Trient/Trento; (approx. 110 km, ascent 1.630 m difference in altitude) From Chiusa you cycle over the high plateau Renon, famous for its earth pyramids and the marvellous view over Schlern and Rosengarten into South Tyrol’s capital Bolzano, where two different linguistic cultures meet each other as well as the Italian and Tyrolean life styles. After a visit of Bolzano`s pedestrian and shopping area “Lau- ben” and the fruit market you cycle over South Tyrol’s wine road. Once you have passed Lake Kalterer See you will leave the mostly German speaking province of South Tyrol and get after Salorno into the Italian speaking Trentino. Fruit trees and wine yards accompany your way to the former bishop’s town Trento with its inviting historic town and castle Buonconsiglio. DAY 4: Trento – Feltre; (approx. 105 km, ascent 1.900 m difference in altitude) After a longer ascent to Lake Caldonazzo, inviting you for a longer stop, you cycle through the Valsugana to Borgo Valsugana. You continue on the scenic road through small picturesque villages to Feltre, a little town on the former „Via Claudia Augusta“, an important Roman military road from Aquileia to Augsburg. DAY 5: Feltre – Pieve di Cadore; (approx. 130 km, ascent 2.700 m difference in altitude) or easy variant via Belluno (approx. 85 km, ascent 1.000 m difference in altitude) You leave Feltre and cycle along the southern part of the Dolomites to Cesiomaggiore, also called “Village of Cy- cling“. The route leads you onto Passo San Boldo, a small alpine pass in the Veneto region. After a rapid descent, you will reach the hilly Prosecco region on the edge of the northern Italian plain at the foot of the Alps. Passing Lago di Santa Croce, you cycle through the Piave Valley to the stage destination Pieve di Cadore. If you prefer to make the day less challenging, you can choose the shorter, direct option via Belluno. DAY 6: Pieve di Cadore – Alta Pusteria; (approx. 90 km, ascent 1.600 m difference in altitude) From Pieve di Cadore you cycle to Auronzo. We suggest a short detour to lake Misurina surrounded by the massif of the Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks), Monte Piana, the Cadini group, Monte Cristallo and in the South from Marmarole and Sorapiss. Your way continues over the Tre Croci Pass into the Olympic city Cortina d’Ampezzo and through the valley Höhlensteintal to Villabassa/Dobbiaco, end point of your road bike tour. As is the case for all cross-border projects, the activities have been agreed upon and developed in partnership with the Austrian associations “Tourismusverband Lienzer Dolomiten” (Lienz- Osttirol region), “Tourismusverband Hochpustertal” (Sillian) and “Verein zur Förderung des Stadtmarktes Lienz”, and with the Bolzano partner “Centro Culturale Grand Hotel Dobbiaco”. The project is an excellent opportunity to promote typical mountain produce, in particular cheeses, in order to create a close link with the promotion of the local area, culture and tourism. There is a clear connection between, one the one hand, the tourist, hotel and catering trades and on the other, the safeguarding and promotion of typical quality produce which, in particular in mountain areas, is one of the main channels of communication with the visitor, insofar as it is representative of the identity of the people who live and work in the mountains.
