Taylor, Chair This dissertation examines how Tuareg people in Niger use music to reckon with their increasing but incomplete entanglement in global neoliberal capitalism. I argue that a variety of social actors—Tuareg musicians, fans, festival organizers, and government officials, as well as music producers from Europe and North America—have come to regard Tuareg music as a resource by which to realize economic, political, and other social ambitions. Such treatment of culture-as-resource is intimately linked to the global expansion of neoliberal capitalism, which has led individual and collective subjects around the world to take on a more entrepreneurial nature by exploiting representations of their identities for a variety of ends. While Tuareg collective identity has strongly been tied to an economy of pastoralism and caravan trade, the contemporary moment demands a reimagining of what it means to be, and to survive as, Tuareg. Since the 1970s, cycles of drought, entrenched poverty, and periodic conflicts have pushed more and more Tuaregs to pursue wage labor in cities across northwestern Africa or to work as trans- ii Saharan smugglers; meanwhile, tourism expanded from the 1980s into one of the region’s biggest industries by drawing on pastoralist skills while capitalizing on strategic essentialisms of Tuareg culture and identity. -

Transnational Habitus: Mariem Hassan as the transcultural representation of the relationship between Saharaui music and Nubenegra records Luis Gimenez Amoros Submitted in partial fullfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Rhodes University PhD (thesis) Department of Music and Musicology Supervisor: Dr Lee Watkins I Abstract This thesis expands on primary field research conducted for my MMus degree. Undertaken in the Saharaui refugee camps of southern Algeria (2004-2005) that research - based on ethnographic data and the analysis of Saharaui music, known as Haul 1- focussed on the musical system, the social context of musical performance and the music culture in Saharaui refugee camps. This doctoral research examines Saharaui Haul music as practised in Spain and is particularly focussed on its entry, since 1998, into the global market by way of the World Music label, Nubenegra records. The encounter between Saharaui musicians and Nubenegra records has created a new type of Saharaui Haul which is different to that played in the refugee camps. This phenomenon has emerged as a result of western music producers compelling Saharaui musicians to introduce musical changes so that both parties may be considered as musical agents occupying different positions on a continuum of tradition and change. Nubenegra undertook the commodification of Saharaui music and disseminated it from the camps to the rest of the world. A musical and social analysis of the relationship between Nubenegra and Saharaui musicians living in Spain will form the basis of the research in this thesis. In particular, Mariem Hassan is an example of a musician who had her music disseminated through the relationship with Nubenegra and she is promoted as the music ambassador of the Western Sahara. -

It is a tale of friendship and trust. We have been crisscrossing the Sahel since 1987 but reached our cruising speed in 2005, when we established relationships so close that we now are part of the “Family”: Ifoghas, Kel Ghela, Iraganatene or Kel Ansar, as well as the Nigerien Tuaregs of Aïr. 1-EXCHANGES & ISSUES 1-1 THE TERRAIN AND THE PEOPLE From 2005, after one or two yearly visits in Aguelhoc, in a family encampment in Tataramat or in the bush in the communes of Kidal and Timbuktu regions where we engaged in an inventory of wells, health centers and schools, undertaking a joint study designed to create digitized maps of the area by the Agence de Développement du Nord-Mali and the University of Saint-Étienne, in France. acquiring knowledge of the terrain, the communes and the remote encampments . sharing with the local populations . reinforcing links with key resource-persons and friends . establishing networks based on trust 1-2 IENTIFYNG THE NEEDS From 2009 onwards, several visits allowed us first to establish special contacts with the people in Tessalit so that during the following years we were able to identify what was needed and to finalize some of our projects. March 2009: the Tuareg rebellion gave up their weapons in the Timetrin area, in Enabag, in the Tessalit cercle. We are met by a strong delegation from Tessalit and we are the only Europeans there. -

“African Blues”: The Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse A thesis submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Saul Meyerson-Knox BA, Guilford College, 2007 Committee Chair: Stefan Fiol, PhD Abstract This thesis explores the musical style known as “African Blues” in terms of its historical and social implications. Contemporary West African music sold as “African Blues” has become commercially successful in the West in part because of popular notions of the connection between American blues and African music. Significant scholarship has attempted to cite the “home of the blues” in Africa and prove the retention of African music traits in the blues; however much of this is based on problematic assumptions and preconceived notions of “the blues.” Since the earliest studies, “the blues” has been grounded in discourse of racial difference, authenticity, and origin-seeking, which have characterized the blues narrative and the conceptualization of the music. Singh PhD ABSTRACT This work looks at the relationship between networks and global consumption of entertainment products from the developing world by analyzing three cases to reveal how different types of support, either government sponsored or market driven, influences the ability of entertainment goods and services to circulate on a global scale. The hypothesis of this research is when networks focus on practices which are market driven circulation of entertainment goods and services from the developing world is more efficient than those networks which rely on government sponsored networks. To create a more focused study the author looks specifically at the festival as a type of network and at its role in circulating film and music from the region of West Africa. The first case considers the French government sponsored Festival de Cannes where West African directors are given a marginalized space to show their work, but the emphasis remains on glamour and spectacle of mainstream cinema. The second case is that of FESPACO, a pan-African film festival that occurs in Burkina Faso every two years.
