Hunter, Ph.D. Date: May 1997 Abstract THE CHRISTIAN FAITH AND DIVISIVE ETHNICITY IN AFRICA: A Case Study of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) in Nigeria With an estimated over 350 ethnic groups speaking different languages, Nigeria is not only the most populous country in Africa but it is also the most multi-ethnic society in Afiica as well. Such ethnic diversity makes ethnicity an important element in the life of each ethnic group because it provides each group with a positive sense of self-identity, security, self-determination, and belongingness. However, at the boundary of human interaction in a multi- ethnic society like Nigeria, a phenomenon emerges that I called divisive ethnicity (which is a conscious act whereby an ethnic group or groups discriminate against another ethnic group on the basis of ethnic differences). It is in this type of multi-ethnic environment that the Sudan Interior Mission now the Society for International Ministries (SIM) established a multi-ethnic and institutionalized church called the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA). This church is now internally threatened by divisive ethnicity. This study is an attempt to analyze this internal problem in ECWA and to suggest a possible solution. It has been argued in this dissertation that the gospel as preached and lived by SIM missionaries was clothed with Western culture and therefore is incapable of minimizing divisive ethnicity in ECWA. Furthermore, it has also been demonstrated through the study of the institutionalization of religion and its dilemmas that the institutionalization of ECWA also in part exacerbates divisive ethnicity in ECWA. Although external factors such as the sociocultural, historical, political, and spiritual are also involved, I have limited myself to the above two factors because they reveal the internal weakness of the ECWA and the church in Africa in general. A model of the church as the one family of God, as one among many other models, with agape (love) as its fimdamental character, has been suggested as a possible solution to the problem. The choice of this model is based on its relational element since family relationship is a core value in African cultures. From this model, seven implications for ethnic relations in ECWA are identified. Among them are, fmt, where agape exists among members of the one family of God, there is no place for divisive ethnicity; second, God is glorified when Christians view themselves as members of one family; third, an attitude of voluntary surrender is generated; and fourth, God's children are compelled to learn each other's cultures. I have recommended seven strategic interventions, These are: (1) the development of deeper Christian communities; (2) training of servant-leaders; (3) the development of an organizational structure that supports inclusion; (4) the affirmation and celebration of ethnic diversity; (5) facilitation of cross-culhual leaming; (6) the exposure of divisive ethnicity as sin and an invitation to repent; and (7) the development of a community of prayer.     European Scientific Journal May 2014 edition vol.10, No.14 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 EXPANDING THE DOMAINS OF ENGLISH INFLUENCE: THE ISSUE OF COLOUR NAMING IN SOME INDIGENOUS NIGERIAN LANGUAGES Rabi Abdulsalam Ibrahim Department of English and Literary Studies Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria Abstract This paper discusses the expanding domain of English in Nigeria, a country where English is its official language. Schmied (1991) explores the domains where English has impacted upon some African languages. One domain he did not include was that of colour naming. This paper investigates the impact of English on speakers of some indigenous Nigerian languages, with emphasis on Hausa, in relation to the languages’ colour terms. It finds that some English colour terms have been loaned into these languages. The terms commonly loaned are blue, and to a lesser extent yellow, gold and silver. The loaned terms have some of their phonemes adapted to follow the phonemic patterns of the indigenous languages. The most common phonemic adaptation that features in the languages is the split consonant feature. Examples of phoneme adaptations of English colour terms in some Nigerian languages include, ibulu for blue in Igala, bulu in Hausa and ehbulu in Esan, while yellow is yalo in Hausa. This paper concludes that with the global influence of English in world, more domains would be impacted upon by the language. However, it is actually hard to give an exact number of languages in Nigeria because some linguists argue that some so called languages are no more than dialects of each other.

It is divided into three sections, each of which addresses a different aspect of the topic. The first section uses computer simulations to examine various mechanisms which may produce diversity in language: imperfect learning, geographical isolation, selection on the basis of social affiliation, and functional selection amongst linguistic variants. It is concluded that social and functional selection by speakers provide the main motive forces for the divergence of languages. The second section examines the factors influencing the geographical distribution of languages in the world. By far the most important is the ecological regime in which people live. Seasonal climates produce large ethnolinguistic groups because people form large networks of exchange to mitigate the subsistence risk to which they are exposed.

Since 1990, schools in the London Borough of Lambeth have demonstrated a commitment to valuing language diversity and have developed a remarkably detailed body of knowledge about the home and community languages used by their pupils. The local authority has implemented a data collection system for Lambeth schools to specifically monitor the range of ethnic backgrounds, languages spoken and English fluency of the school population. The 2016 ‘EAL Fluency Survey’ was the 26th in the series carried out by the LA since 1990.

Watts, Chair This work challenges the widely held controversial “greed and grievance” (resource curse) narrative by drawing critical insights about conflicts in the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has attracted substantial scholarly attention in view of the paradox of poverty and violence amidst abundant natural resources. This discourse suggests that persistent resource- induced conflicts in the region derive from either greed or grievance. Instead, the present work draws inspiration from the political geography of the Niger Delta, and puts the physical area at the center of its analysis. The understanding that the past and present history of a people is etched in their socio-political geography inspires this focus. Whereas existing literatures engages with the Niger Delta as a monolithic domain, my study takes a more nuanced approach, which recognizes a multiplicity of layers mostly defined by socio-geographical peculiarities of different parts of the region and specificity of conflicts its people experience.
