Abstract Evaluating Holocene Precipitation
ABSTRACT EVALUATING HOLOCENE PRECIPITATION VARIABILITY IN THE BALTIC REGION USING OXYGEN ISOTOPES OF LACUSTRINE CARBONATE FROM ESTONIA Carolyn Fortney, M.S. Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences Northern Illinois University, 2016 Nathan D. Stansell, Director Oxygen isotopes derived from authigenic carbonate from open lake systems record variations in seasonal precipitation source. This study focuses on the sediment record from Lake Nuudsaku in southern Estonia to evaluate how winter versus summer precipitation has changed throughout the Holocene as a result of fluctuating North Atlantic Ocean conditions, primarily the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Estonia receives precipitation with a lower δ18O value from the North Atlantic and Baltic Sea during the winter months. In contrast, during the summer months Estonia receives precipitation with greater δ18O values from warmer North Atlantic waters and from the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. Therefore, lower δ18O values in the carbonate record were interpreted as periods of time in which there were increases in the amount of winter precipitation. Oxygen isotope data indicate relatively wet winters during the early Holocene (9960 to 8800 cal yr BP) followed by a shift toward drier winters during the middle of the Holocene (8800 to 4200 cal yr BP). The late Holocene (4200 cal yr BP to the present) was characterized by the wettest winters recorded in the oxygen isotope record. The periods of increased winter precipitation in the Baltic region generally coincided with periods of increased NAO index between 5200 cal yr BP and 1000 cal yr BP. There was an inverse relationship between winter precipitation and NAO index during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age (900 to 100 cal yr BP). -

(2014): AKIS and advisory services in Estonia. Report for the AKIS inventory (WP3) of the PRO AKIS project. Online resource: www.proakis.eu/publicationsandevents/pubs 2 Executive summary The aim of the report is to provide a description of the Agricultural Knowledge and Information System (AKIS) in Estonia, with a particular focus on agricultural advisory services. The description includes the main structural characteristics of agricultural sector, characteristics of AKIS, an overview of the history, policy and funding of AKIS, and an outline of Farm Advisory System. This report represents an output of the PRO AKIS project (Prospects for Farmers’ Support: Advisory Services in the European Agricultural Knowledge and Information Systems’. It is one of 27 country reports compiling an inventory of AKIS. AKIS describe the exchange of knowledge and supporting services between many diverse actors from the first, second or third sector. AKIS provide farmers with relevant knowledge and networks around innovations in agriculture. Findings from this country report were presented at thee regional workshop in February 2014, discussed with stakeholders and experts, and feedback integrated in the report. Estonian agriculture is characterised by high degree of concentration of production in relatively small number of commercial farms. There were 19 613 agricultural holdings in Estonia in 2010 and 5% of these holdings accounted for three quarters of the agricultural output. -

Title: A landscape biography of the ‘Land of Drumlins’: Vooremaa, East Estonia Issue date: 2020-12-03 6 Case study 1: The Long-term history of settlement and land use in Vooremaa 6.1 Settlement sites Human habitation and adaption to the surrounding environment in the past is represented by the location and distribution of archaeological settlement sites in the landscape. At present, 119 archaeological settlement sites are known in the Vooremaa study area (Figure 20), 81 of which are officially registered as cultural heritage in the National Registry of Cultural Monuments (http://register.muinas.ee). It is the most abundant type of archaeological sites in Vooremaa. At the same time, settlement sites represent the most under-investigated archaeological monuments in the region. Figure 20. Distribution of archaeological settlement sites in Vooremaa. LIDAR map: Estonian Land Board. Archaeological settlement sites can be defined as remains of prehistoric/historic villages or farms where cultural materials and features have accumulated over time because of various human activities. The associated anthropogenic layers differ from the surrounding topsoil in several aspects: 79 1. generally, the soil is dark and sooty, sometimes even dark greyish blue, whereas topsoils in the surrounding landscape lighter in colour and more of brownish in nature. 2. the soil contains burned stone debris and charcoal; 3. the soil contains pieces of pottery, animal bones, sometimes coins and bits of jewellery. Tools, such as knives, grinding and whetstones are also common. -
Funeral Customs of Caucasian Estonians
FUNERAL CUSTOMS OF CAUCASIAN ESTONIANS Marika Mikkor Introduction Customs characterising a nation or an ethnic group, depend on the stage of development of the society, dominant religion and ethnic environment. In an ethnological study of settlers their origin, time of emigration and national composition of settlements should be taken into account. Of the Estonian villages of Caucasia the village of Estonia was founded in 1882 by the Estonians from the province (guberniya) of Samara, who had left Estonia in the 1850-1860s. The villages of Salme and Sulevi were founded in 1884 and 1885, respectively, by the peasants of Harjumaa, the village of Punase-Lageda was founded in 1886 by Estonians from the North-Caucasian settlement of Esto-Haginsky, who had left Estonia in the 1870s *1 (Võime 1980, 16-18, 21; Võime 1974, 120, 121). In the second half of the past century, in the conditions of arising capitalism, the first settlers of the villages were peasants whose resettlement was favoured by the tsarist government. In addition to the first settlers, new emigrants kept coming both from different regions of Estonia and from other Estonian settlements in Russia. At the same time, there were also leavers. Within the boundaries of one village there lived, side by side, people from different parishes and counties. Parochial belonging of Estonian settlers would be a separate topic of research. For example, in the village of Sulevi descendants of the peasants from Kuusalu and Rõuge parishes married each other. Settlements were founded as a result of Russian-Turkish wars in the 1860-70s on the lands abandoned by Abkhazian and Circassian people (Chursin 1956, 194). -
