Just not right now. And not for existing retirees. And maybe not the plan Congress has already passed. In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee on 28 JAN, defense officials pushed for a repeal of the military retirement changes passed by Congress last month as part of a comprehensive budget deal. They called the move unexpected and unfair, saying that any large changes in military compensation should not include current troops and retirees, who have been promised specific benefits and retirement payouts already. But Christine Fox, acting deputy secretary of defense, also noted that changes to compensation such as troops’ pay, health care benefits, and retirement payouts will be needed soon, to keep personnel costs from overwhelming the rest of the military budget. “We cannot afford to sustain the rate of growth in military compensation that we’ve experienced over the last decade,” she said. “We must find ways to slow it down … if the department is going to maintain the current force.” Christine Fox (left), acting deputy secretary of defense and Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Fox said officials want to wait until later this year when the military compensation and retirement modernization commission will issue its report before making any further pay and benefits changes. Discovery Lodge of Research held a special meeting there on Wednesday 6 January to receive the Master of Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076 EC, the editor of Ars Quatuor Coronatorum, and the Prestonian Lecturer for 2009—all in the person of Sheffield University’s Dr John Wade. Some 37 brethren attended the lodge, including the Grand Master, MWBro Dr Greg Levenston, and representatives from Newcastle and Canberra. WM Ewart Stronach introduced Bro Wade, outlining his academic and Masonic achievements, gave a brief account of the origin of Prestonian Lectures, and closed the lodge. Ladies and other visitors were then admitted, swelling the audience to 54, for a brilliant rendition of the lecture: ‘“Go and do thou likewise”, English Masonic Processions from the 18th to the 20th Centuries’. Bro Wade made good use of modern technology with a PowerPoint presentation, including early film footage of 20th-century processions, supplementing it with his own imitation of a fire-and-brimstone preacher, and a spirited rendition of the first verse of The Entered Apprentice’s Song. Aug 01 1907 – U.S. Army: Air Force Day » On this day the U.S. Army Signal Corps established a small Aeronautical Division to take care of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines and all kindred subjects. The Signal corps began testing its first airplane at Fort Myers, Virginia, on August 20, 1908. After more testing with an improved Wright Flyer, the Army formerly accepted this airplane, identified as “Airplane No. 1,” on August 2, 1909. In early 1913, the Army ordered its aviators who were training in Augusta Georgia, and Palm Beach, Florida to Texas to take part in the 2nd Division maneuvers. In Galveston on 3 MAR, the chief Signal Oficer designated the assembled men and equipment the the “1st Provisional Aero Squadron” with Capt. Charles DeF. Chandler as squadron commander. They began flying activities a few days later. On 4 DEC, general orders redesignate the unit as the 1st Aero Squadron, effective 8 DEC. The first military unit of the U.S. Army devoted exclusively to aviation has remained continuously active since its creation. Air Force Day was established on August 1, 1947, by President Truman "in recognition of the personnel of the victorious Army Air Forces and all those who have developed and maintained our nation's air strength." August 1 was chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment, in 1907, of the Aeronautical Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army.
