MAY IT PLEASE YOUII EXCELLENCY, I have the honour, in accordance with Section 27 of tlie University Act 1915, to submit to your Excellency the following report of the proceedings of the Univer sity during1 the past year: — 1—THE WAR. Tlie services whicli the University and members of the Staff have been able to render in connection with the war have continued on much the same lines as in previous years, although iu most departments the calls made upon the University have been'somewhat less than previously owing to the fact that war work has largely settled down into fixed channels. The effect on the attendances at the University has also continued in that the numbers of men students have continued to decrease and those of women students to increase. Comparing those in attendance on lectures in 1917 with those in attendance in 1914, there- are 292 -fewer mun and ll't more women, or if the Conservatorium jfigirres arc included, 290 fewer men and 173 more women. This result is obtained notwithstanding the abnormal 64-2 ANNUAL' REPORT, 10101017. increase in the number, of entries for tlie 1st year'medi cine, which is 1G3 (135 men and 28 women)'for 1917, as compared with 11 (i (107 men and 9 woinen) in 1914. The number of members of the University who have gone- overseas on war service has now been raised to about 14SIJ, and the list giving- this total cannot be regarded as complete.
