It ‘snowballed’ and I started to obtain information, from a variety of sources, the details of other crew members who served with him. This is a short history of one particular aircrew of 97 Path Finder Force Squadron, and the personnel changes that took place. Their final fateful flight was in Lancaster 111 JB708 OF-J, on the 11th May 1944, when it exploded in flight over Vendville and crashed within the limit of Lille-Vendeville airfield, then used by the Luftwaffe. All the crew lost their lives. The original crew are introduced and this involves the service histories of the original crew members, and those who joined and left, which have been acquired to date. Throughout the ‘life’ of the crew, three members remained as a nucleus: Sgt JR Chapman RCAF, Sgt DED Harvey RAFVR and Pilot Officer LC Jones RAFVR. There were two pilots/captains: Flying Officer WN Roberts DFM RAF (who survived the war) and Flight Lieutenant JB Smith DFC RNZAF who was the pilot on the 11th May 1944. The data is taken from a number of resources, which are listed in the references. The data is centred upon the various operations that the crew, and new crew members, were involved in and this information originates from the various Squadron Operations Books. All the data, other than that provided by Mr A Riches, comes from identifiable sources. However, I have used a number of extracts from Middlebrook, M. and Everitt, C. (1985) to add more detail to the various raids that were undertaken by the crew members, both when serving with 97 Squadron and other Squadrons prior to and after their engagement with the squadron. I have assured Penn and Sword that this ‘book’ is not to be published and I will receive no financial gain from it. There has been no attempt to make this a ‘story’; I hope the data speaks for itself. During the course of the research I have located some of the relatives of the crew members: Peter Roberts, son of Flying Officer WN Roberts DFM RAF - Pilot Pat Chapman, daughter of Warrant Officer JR Chapman DFC, RCAF – Mid Upper Gunner Howard Chapman, nephew of WO Chapman Paul Richardson, nephew of Flight Lieutenant LC Jones DFC, RAFVR – Bomb Aimer Jean Burdett, daughter of Sgt JD Tinsdeall RAF – Flight Engineer Ann Fry, daughter of Flight Lieutenant AW Weston RAFVR – Navigator I contacted two of the late WO Wright’s daughters in order to obtain permission to apply for his RAF Records; however, having waited for some considerable time I have not received the appropriate paperwork and therefore his RAF time-line cannot be included. It was stated that he served with another bomber squadron prior to being posted to 97 Squadron, where he completed a second tour. He survived the war and settled, so I believe, in Swansea where he died on 22nd September 2000. Richard Jozefiak, a former Police Officer at Lesquin airport, has carried out extensive research into the crew and the night of the attack. His ‘story’ is attached at Appendix J. Peter Harvey 4 The Original Crew The formation of the original aircrew was on the 25th April 1943 at No 81 Operational Training Unit, RAF Ashbourne, Derbyshire: 972388 Sgt W.N. Roberts (Pilot) RAF crewed up with the Mid Upper Air Gunner, R/85522 Sgt J.R. Chapman (RCAF) Air Gunner. On the 5th May 1943 two other crew members joined: 138589 P/O Jones (RAFVR) Bomb Aimer and 1072007 Sgt Harvey (RAFVR) Wireless Operator. They were flying training in the Whitley Mk V bomber, a twin engined heavy bomber. From: http://www.wwiivehicles.com/unitedkingdom/aircraft/bomber/whitley.asp On 7th May 1943 658210 Sgt S.J. Peek (RAFVR) Navigator joined the crew. They spent almost 3 months at this base before being posted on 15th June 1943 to Number 1655 Heavy Conversion Unit, RAF Lindholme, near Doncaster. This was a Heavy Conversion Unit formed for crews to convert from medium to heavy bombers, prior to a posting to an operational squadron. They flew in the Halifax Bomber (http://www.wwiivehicles.com/unitedki ngdom/aircraft/bomber/handley-page- halifax.asp). On the 6th July 1943 they flew their first training sortie in the Lancaster 111. On the 23rd July they were posted to 97 Squadron; however, before operational flying could take place they were sent, on the 27th July 1943, to RAF Upwood, a PFF Navigational Training Unit. The unit’s purpose was to train crews which had been selected from Main Force Squadrons for duties with the PFF. This crew came straight from their respective initial training units. J - http://www.ww2-pathfinders.co.uk/index.html The crew made 11 trips / sorties to Berlin 6 97 (Straits Settlements) Squadron The Squadron was formed on `1st December 1917 at Waddington in Lincolnshire as a training squadron, moving to Stonehenge in January 1918. In the 1st World War it was equipped with Handley Page 0/400 and sent to France as night bombers. In 1919 it was equipped with DH10 aircraft and sent to India and in 1920 the squadron was disbanded. It was reformed in September 1935 at Abingdon as part of No 6 Training Group within Bomber Command but it was disbanded and eventually reformed in April 1940 at Driffield with Whitley bombers. It was again disbanded, but in 1941 a large donation by the Malay Straits Settlement caused it to be reformed with Avro Manchester aircraft. It then became 97 Squadron (Straits Settlement). Below are the airfields the Squadron was stationed: Waddington : Feb 1941-Mar 1941 Coningsby : Mar 1941-Mar 1942 Woodhall Spa : Mar 1942-Apr 1943 Bourn : Apr 1943-Apr 1944 - A", "B" & "C" Flights detached to Gransden Lodge, Graveley & Oakington, respectively, during Aug/Sep 1943. Coningsby : Apr 1944 onwards The crew were initially stationed at RAF Bourn, near Cambridge. The RAF acquired a piece of land near Bourn Grange 1940, and the airfield was completed at the end of 1941. The airfield consisted of temporary buildings and the only permanent fixture was the control tower.

The Noise and Vibration Division (NVD) of the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine (CAM) were tasked at Reference A by DSEA-CPA-Policy 1a to conduct a Noise Amelioration Scheme (Military) review of RAF Church Fenton. 2. A Noise Insulation Grant Scheme (NIGS) review of RAF Church Fenton was conducted in 2001 (Reference B). The most recent Environmental Noise Contours of RAF Church Fenton were produced in Feb 1989 (Reference C). The 2001 review found that the number of movements since 1989 had decreased and the conclusion was the 1989 contours were still relevant. 3. The survey conducted in 1989 included the Percival Jet Provost turbojet which was stationed at RAF Church Fenton in a training role for fast jet, multi-engine and rotary-wing aircraft pilots. In Apr 1992 the station closed and therefore the NIGS was suspended, but the airfield remained open as a relief landing ground for the Tucano turboprop aircraft operating from RAF Linton-on-Ouse. The Tucano replaced the Jet Provost.

    A Personal Retrospective View of the Dog Demo Team Visit to the USA and Canada 50 years on By Michael Hall During the months of 1969, I was employed on the RAF Police Dog Demonstration Team based at RAF Debden. I had already served 12 months with the Team when there arose several rumours of a proposed tour of North America and Canada being planned. These are my recollections of that ‘once in a lifetime’ event which took place 50 years ago. In preparing this retrospective, I am indebted to Steve Davies and to Rod Inwood, the RAF Police Association archivist, who both supplied some ‘missing’ information (stuff I had forgotten!). That summer the Team appeared at the Royal Tournament in London and other events around the country as the rumours of the ‘American Tour’ intensified. Finally, at a meeting at Debden, the rumours were confirmed and I was told that my name was included in the Team of 12 handlers who would be going. Other handlers selected were Cpl Dennis Cockerell to be team leader, Cpls Mick Chidgey, Jack Johnson, Hedley (Chalky) White, Phil Andrews, George Philp, Ken Hodgeson, John Judd, Roger Clarke, Vic Aitken and Dave Spence. In Command would be Fg Off Peter Brough, assisted by Sgt Danny Holden. Sixteen of the best Demo dogs were selected to go. The Demo routine was amended slightly to fit in with other military performances as part of a large touring event similar to that of the London Royal Tournament. He entered the RAF College Cranwell in January 1929 as a Flight Cadet. After graduating in December 1930, with a permanent commission, Eeles joined 41 Squadron at Northolt. On 1st October 1932, he was posted to HQ RAF Middle East as PA to the AOC. Eeles returned to the UK in early 1934 and, on 11 February, he went to the Air Armament School at Eastchurch for a course.     ARTICLE HOW TELEVISION €˜GHOSTS€™ CONTRIBUTED TO POSITIONING First Developments of Electronic Navigation Systems Before and during the Second World War, there were several developments in electronics that changed the course of hydrographic history. These aircraft bombing systems were what ultimately led from the medium-frequency systems to super-high-frequency navigation systems that characterised navigational control for hydrographic surveying throughout much of the world for the next 50 years. Not by coincidence did they also lead to many advances in distance measurement in geodetic and plane surveying. Oboe, Gee, Decca and Loran were developed by the British for various types of navigation during the war. Oboe was the equivalent of a super-high-frequency range- range system in which a bombing aircraft would follow a pre-set range arc from one station called the ‘cat' and would drop its ordnance when it intersected a second predetermined arc from a second station termed the ‘mouse'. This system was capable of placing bombs within at least 65 metres of the desired target. Gee, Decca and Loran were usually set up so that navigation was accomplished by observing and plotting intersecting hyperbolic lines of position. Accordingly, they had varying accuracies depending on factors such as system frequency, hyperbolic lane expansion, lines-of- position intersection angles and the weather. The US contribution to these navigation methods was a 300MHz line-of-sight system called Shoran (an acronym for short-range navigation). The origins of Shoran can be traced to a serendipitous discovery before the war. Stuart Seeley, an engineer with the Radio Corporation of America, developed a concept for an extremely accurate navigation system based not on work with radar, but with television.

    Harashim The Quarterly Newsletter of the Australian & New Zealand Masonic Research Council ISSN 1328-2735 Issue 49 January 2010 First Prestonian Lecture in Australia John Wade at Discovery Lodge of Research Laurelbank Masonic Centre, in the inner Sydney suburbs, was the venue for the presentation of the first Prestonian Lecture in Australia by a current Prestonian Lecturer. Discovery Lodge of Research held a special meeting there on Wednesday 6 January to receive the Master of Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076 EC, the editor of Ars Quatuor Coronatorum, and the Prestonian Lecturer for 2009—all in the person of Sheffield University’s Dr John Wade. Some 37 brethren attended the lodge, including the Grand Master, MWBro Dr Greg Levenston, and representatives from Newcastle and Canberra. WM Ewart Stronach introduced Bro Wade, outlining his academic and Masonic achievements, gave a brief account of the origin of Prestonian Lectures, and closed the lodge. Ladies and other visitors were then admitted, swelling the audience to 54, for a brilliant rendition of the lecture: ‘“Go and do thou likewise”, English Masonic Processions from the 18th to the 20th Centuries’. Bro Wade made good use of modern technology with a PowerPoint presentation, including early film footage of 20th-century processions, supplementing it with his own imitation of a fire-and-brimstone preacher, and a spirited rendition of the first verse of The Entered Apprentice’s Song.
