Prefazione di Sir Peter Blake al libro "Luna Rossa" sulla 30^ America's Cup (2000) La Coppa America è un trofeo molto ambito, ma che di rado ha cambiato mano in 150 anni. Questo non è uno sport per deboli di cuore. Non è impresa da prendere alla leggera o per capriccio. É una lotta tra velisti di Yacht Club sparsi nel mondo che vogliono disperatamente la stessa cosa: mettere le mani sulla Coppa. Il prestigio per il vincitore vale più di qualsiasi altro riconoscimento sportivo. É proprio vincere l’invincibile e fare l’impossibile che affascina uomini di mare, sognatori e miliardari. Ma la vittoria non arriva facilmente. Anzi, il più delle volte non arriva affatto. L’unico modo per vincere è continuare a partecipare, continuare a tornare, una volta dopo l’altra, con l’intimo convincimento di potercela fare. Esitare dopo il primo tentativo non fa parte delle regole del gioco. Ci vogliono persone straordinarie, con una motivazione ferrea, grande esperienza, attenzione per i particolari e dedizione incondizionata. É un gioco in cui, per quanto tu ti possa impegnare, per quanto tu possa essere motivato, per quanto tu possa essere disposto a spendere, la vittoria non è mai garantita. Per alcuni diventa una specie di droga. É un gioco che puoi arrivare a odiare profondamente, salvo poi scoprire che non puoi farne a meno, finché non vinci. Poi avviene la metamorfosi, o almeno è quanto è successo a me. -

THE INTERNATIONAL FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK www.sailfd.org 1 2 Preface and acknowledgements for the “FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK” by Alberto Barenghi, IFDCO President The Class Book is a basic and elegant instrument to show and testify the FD history, the Class life and all the people who have contributed to the development and the promotion of the “ultimate sailing dinghy”. Its contents show the development, charm and beauty of FD sailing; with a review of events, trophies, results and the role past champions . Included are the IFDCO Foundation Rules and its byelaws which describe how the structure of the Class operate . Moreover, 2002 was the 50th Anniversary of the FD birth: 50 years of technical deve- lopment, success and fame all over the world and of Class life is a particular event. This new edition of the Class Book is a good chance to celebrate the jubilee, to represent the FD evolution and the future prospects in the third millennium. The Class Book intends to charm and induce us to know and to be involved in the Class life. Please, let me assent to remember and to express my admiration for Conrad Gulcher: if we sail, love FD and enjoyed for more than 50 years, it is because Conrad conceived such a wonderful dinghy and realized his dream, launching FD in 1952. Conrad, looked to the future with an excellent far-sightedness, conceived a “high-perfor- mance dinghy”, which still represents a model of technologic development, fashionable 3 water-line, low minimum hull weight and performance . Conrad ‘s approach to a continuing development of FD, with regard to materials, fitting and rigging evolution, was basic for the FD success. -

100 år med kappsegling och kappseglare Jubileumsskrift utgiven i samband med Göteborgs Yacht Club’s 100-års jubileum GYC-kamrater! Vår Klubb har fyllt 100 år! Denna skrift är tänkt att kröna jubileumsfirandet och hjälpa oss som varit med ett tag att minnas det som var och bevara åt framtiden den stolthet vi alla känner över vårt medlemskap i denna fina klubb. Hur fin den är kan mätas i segrar och medaljer, och sådana finns det förvisso gott om, men vi har valt att fokusera på den kamratskap som alltid präglat Göteborgs Yacht Club. Samtidigt som man inte kan bortse från den betydelse vår Klubb och dess företrädare, såväl moderklubbar som medlemmar , har haft för svensk kappseg- lingshistoria. Under rubriken ”Seglare minns” finns ett antal ”goa” historier som just illus- trerar denna kamratskap och ödmjukhet inför vad kappseglandet givit oss alla. Förhoppningsvis skall dessa minnen också visa tidsandan genom kappseglingshis- torien och ge oss och framtida kappseglare historisk inblick och trevlig läsning. Vår klubb stiftades den 13 oktober 1916 som ett dottersällskap till SS AEolus under Seglande för nöjes skull var länge förbehållet kungligheter och kejsare och kom det usprungliga namnet AEolus Segeljaktklubb, sedermera AEolus Yacht Club till Sverige genom Gustav III på sent 1700-tal. En viss utbredning av ”lustsegling” (1926). Dess syfte var att representera i pokalseglingarna nämnda ovan.
