Its ‘Voice’ situates an ontological approach originating from familial and cultural traditions. Multifaceted, it speaks to Western intellectual values, Aboriginality and the transformative nature of silence. Primarily a practise-based creative nonfiction project, the Notebook of Belonging has an embedded exegetical commentary. The exegetical cannot be sliced away at either end without weakening the centre; the centre is not as strong without the exegetical. In this way, there are tensions and there are alignments in how book learnt interacts with oral story. The authority of book knowledge in relation to oral traditions is contested here. The Notebook of Belonging presents knowledge imparted in oral story-telling whereby belonging and connection exist through a shared understanding of the interconnected nature of life and being. Oral story uses silence, repetition and reflection. -

Like the Romance and Germanic peoples, they are related by area and culture, not so much by blood. Today there are thirteen different Slavic groups divided into three blocs, Eastern, Southern and Western. These include the Russians, Poles, Czechs, Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Serbians,Croatians, Macedonians, Slovenians, Bulgarians, Kashubians, Albanians and Slovakians. Although the Lithuanians, Estonians and Latvians are of Baltic tribes, we are including some of their customs as they are similar to those of their Slavic neighbors. ©Copyright 2013 Irena Percinkova-Patton Toast to Morrison: The Trickster Paradigm in African American Literature Irena Percinkova-Patton A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: Brian Reed, Chair Sonnet Retman Nikolai Popov Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of English University of Washington Abstract Toast to Morrison: The Trickster Paradigm in African American Literature Irena Percinkova-Patton This dissertation is an examination of the trickster paradigm—an aesthetic, a principle that is specific to black creativity and narration and an enabling force behind the subversive rhetorical strategies of “Signifyin(g)” or double-voicedness, that I trace in the African American vernacular and literary tradition. Through an analysis of the works of Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Melvin Tolson and Toni Morrison, I outline a theory of the trickster principle that is operative on several levels. My project relies on a reading of the trickster as a culture hero—figure of mediation and resistance—and codifies the importance of this figure as a “signifier” in black consciousness that has endured over centuries, encompassing acts of subjugation and transformation in response to historical changes. In addition, my discussion of the trickster tradition opens up a larger argument pertaining to the dynamics of vernacular/literary production and the ability to respond to the demands of American modernity—in terms of mobility, urbanization, industrizalization, etc. I also trace how these processes of reclaiming and recovery of vernacular expressive modes and their use in written literature reveal the unsettling issue of not just coming to terms with American capitalist modernity, but also with the American modernist literary canon. -

U uvodu se nalazi kratak sociolingvistički pregled najvažnijih termina (standardni jezik, standardizacija, norma, kodifikacija, jezička politika, planiranje jezika). Južnoslovenski standardni jezici su predstavljeni u ovom redoslijedu: slovenač- ki, hrvatski, crnogorski. Nakon kratkog prikaza njihovog istorij- skog razvoja slijede informacije o samome standardnom jeziku, a zatim o savremenom položaju tih jezika. Na kraju priloga ima kratak poredbeni prikaz predstavljenih jezika. Não sendo reservada para pessoas especializadas nem limitada a certos espaços, podia ser contada/cantada por qualquer pessoa em qualquer lugar, tanto nos momentos de trabalho como nos momentos de descanso. O imaginário popular usa-a como um catalisador de identidade e revela tudo aquilo que perturba, fascina e assusta os membros da certa comunidade. Por isso, no nosso entender, é uma maneira privilegiada de ler e sentir a história não só dos reis e das batalhas, mas também do povo e da sua maneira de processar as alterações históricas e integrá-los na sua visão do mundo. -

Preface PREFACE Kata KULAVKOVA (Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts) An Arabesque for the Black Arab, Bolen Dojcin and White Angelina Our research into the subject of The Black Arab as a (Balkan, Mediterranean) Figure of Memory, conducted within the framework of the European project Interpretations managed by the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences, was aimed at initiating a new mode of thinking and perception of Slavic and non-Slavic Balkan cultures. This mode of thinking might not be completely new in the general sense of the word, but it is new within the framework of the contemporary Balkan social constellation. For this constellation has long been char- acterised by mutual negations; animosities; exclusive interpretations of the past; immoderate appropriations of the spiritual legacy of neigh- bouring cultures; denials of the right of others to partake in a shared cultural and historical heritage; indicative explications of ethnic cultural identity through the application of historical paradigms; a fi xation on history; adoration of ancient ‘scripts’ of culture; the politicization of our shared spiritual heritage; revision and negation of identities; cultural xeno-skepsis; and the increased prevalence of ethnic or bi-ethnic prin- ciples in the constitution and functioning of states. Our mode of thinking starts from the belief that, at the beginning of the 21st century, in an atmosphere of global crisis and threatened prosperity, the peoples of the Balkans are in need of a scientifi cally based, multi-focal interpretative methodology which will observe his- tory as an intersection of autochthonous and shared constituents. The contemporary hermeneutics of history should be founded upon a com- parative and inclusive epistemological model. -

Review Received: 2nd Nov. 1998 Accepted: 20th March 1999 UDK 886.2.091:398(262-92) MAJA BOŠKOVIĆ-STULLI Avenija Vukovar 235, Zagreb MEDITERRANEAN ASPECTS OF CROATIAN ORAL LITERATURE The paper deals with the interweaving of civilizations in the area of eastern Adriatic and its history as well as with the features of the oral traditions significantly connected with the western Mediterranean: verse, style and contents of the ballads, the two-way influences (Straparola, Basile), transformations of the stories from the "Thousand and One Night", reflections of the maritime and coastal life in stories. Keywords: oral tradition, the Mediterranean, the eastern Adriatic, sea in folklore It has often been said that the Mediterranean has many aspects; it is a mosaic of cultures and histories, geographic and natural characteristics, evading any attempt at a simple and unambiguous definition. According to Vladimir Vratović, Croatian Mediterranean culture should be regarded in terms of its contacts with the remaining Roman material and spiritual culture, its belonging to the Roman Catholic Church, its classical and humanist education, its proximity to Italy, and its exposure to the influences of Greek and Roman culture in literature and the sciences (Vratović 1995:103). This is true not only of written, but also of oral literature. We should add, however, that the oral tradition is more complex, and exposed to more varied trends and influences. Europeans, Africans, Asiatics, Persians, and Arabs have all contributed their genetic structures, as well as their cultural inheritance, to the vast pool of human knowledge that is Mediterranean civilisation. -
