Concerns for human relationships in cyberspace, for how the EU's Digital Agenda resonates with the spirit of our times, the unprecedented expansion of human skills due to digital technologies are vastly discussed by the academic community of the Politehnica University of Timișoara. The first Romanian university-developed and hosted computer, MECIPT (also used to perform computer-assisted translations from English into Romanian and vice versa) was the pride of Politehnica University in the early ’60s of the last century. Nowadays, digital technologies no longer concern exclusively programing and engineering design, but have become relevant for social sciences and linguistics, communication and public relations. Timișoara itself is a citadel in which digital and computer-mediated communication excels. Timișoara became the city where the first digital tree in Romania was “planted” – a solar Wi-Fi charger for mobile devices, which allows up to 840,000 charges of 10 minutes per year. And this is only one example which shows how the city facilitates thus human communication in the digital age. Thus, it is no wonder why in 2015 PCTS9 aimed at encouraging exchanges of ideas on the impact of new technologies on communication, at highlighting the evolution of humanities and social sciences in conjunction with technological innovation, and at investigating how the language industry adapted to the challenges of today’s digitized world. The first PCTS conference was first organized in 2001, and right from the start it became a visible scientific event in the academic community and attracted numerous participants from Romania and abroad. Selected contributions were regularly published in the conference proceedings, in the first years as separate collected volumes, and starting with 2008 on a yearly basis (ISSN 2065-099X). The proceedings’ international advisory board includes renowned scholars from Europe (Denmark, France, Germany, Ukraine, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Romania) and from the United States. Since 2013, the conference enjoys the support of the Romanian Academy of Scientists. A distinctive feature of the conference is multilingualism. PCTS is one of the few events that uses Romanian, English, French and German as working v PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION AND TRANSLATION STUDIES, 8 / 2015 languages, which, except Romanian, are also the languages of publication of the conference proceedings. The 2015 edition of PCTS gathered over 140 participants, out of which 65 were affiliated with universities or research centers from the USA, Europe, Asia or Africa. The Romanian participants represented 19 universities, academies and research centers. In the tradition of PCTS, the contributions presented at the conference and submitted for publication were peer-reviewed, and the selected authors will be published in two separate volumes in 2015 and 2016. The current volume reflects the four sections of the conference: professional communication; linguistics and communication; translation studies; and foreign language pedagogy. The volume also mirrors the main research trends in these respective areas. The Professional communication section comprises eight articles dedicated to media and new media, to rhetoric and multimodality in communication, to semiotics, the new language of signs and meanings, triggered by the intervention of new technologies in generating messages for the digitally empowered public. The second section, Linguistics and communication, focuses on Romanian language and anglicisms, citation practices in professional literature (economics), a comparative approach to antonymy and on phonetics from the point of view of challenges for non-native speakers of English in medical communication. The section Translation studies displays the largest linguistic variety – English, German and French. The six articles tackle different challenges of the translator of professional texts, diachronic approaches in translation studies, the digital dimension of language use and the cultural competence which accompanies (or should do so) the translator’s practice. Finally, the Foreign language pedagogy section consists of 4 articles and represents a valuable contribution to teaching English and German in a culturally rich and diverse medium, with traps and challenges which can be successfully addressed by competent and talented professors. The section List of abstracts in English at the end of the volume offers a quick look into the articles that set up the volume. The abstracts are arranged alphabetically, by their authors’ name. In the long tradition of the PCTS volumes, the current volume will also be submitted for indexation in major databases relevant for social sciences and language studies, contributing thus to the dissemination of theories and ideas in our fields of study and research. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is the development of a literary culture among the Romanians in the period 1829-1890; the effect of this development on the Romanians’ drive towards social modernization and political independence; and the way in which the idea of literature (as both concept and concrete manifestation) and the idea of the Romanian nation shaped each other. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes.

STEPHEN III OF MOLDAVIA LEGACY OF KING STEPHEN III After Stephen’s reign Moldavia became a client state under the Ottomans. In the eighteenth century, Rus- sia would also pursue ambitions in the region. yet de- “ spite conflict and confrontation a strong identification with Christianity, a rich culture emerged which blend- ed East and West, creating a cultural bridge between rival civilizations. As the story of human development is told, ensuring that a one-sided picture of constant conflict and enmity between people of different -ra cial, religious and cultural identities does not domi- nate at the expense of episodes of harmony, is a vital task. Stephen is remembered as a Christian champion against the Ottomans but in the end, if reluctantly, he enteered a peace treaty. STEPHEN III OF MOLDAVIA Stephen III of Moldavia, known as Stephen the Great ; died on 2 July 1504) was voivode (or prince) of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504. He was the son of and co-ruler with Bogdan II of Moldavia who was murdered in 1451 in a conspiracy organized by his brother and Stephen’s uncle Peter III Aaron who took the throne. Stephen fled to Hungary, and later to Wallachia, but with the support of Vlad III Dracula, Voivode of Wallachia, he returned to Moldavia, forcing Aaron to seek refuge in Poland in the summer of 1457. Teoctist I, Metropolitan of Moldavia, anointed Stephen prince. He attacked Poland and prevented Casimir IV Jagiellon, King of Poland, from supporting Peter Aaron, but eventually acknowledged Casimir’s suzerainty in 1459. Stephen decided to say a message to a professor, and it was to Boboc Valentain Chilia (now Kili- ya in Ukraine), an important port on the Danube, which brought him into conflict with Hungary and Wallachia.

ANALELE ŞTIINŢIFICE ALE UNIVERSITĂŢII DE STAT „B. P. HASDEU” DIN CAHUL, VOL. VII, 2011 FORME INCIPIENTE ALE EXPRIMĂRII ESEISTICE ÎN PROZA LUI CONSTANTIN NEGRUZZI Snejana POŞTARU, Catedra de Filologie Română Constantin Negruzzi is a writer with extensive interests, the foreground of which is fiction, but with the merits and qualities of the play writer, poet and translator he illustrates through his entire activity the evolution and destiny of forty-fighter’s literature, marked by numerous romantic influences as the social convulsions of the time. Negruzzi remains in our literature, especially through his short story "Alexander Lapusneanul" which is the most true characterization of his literary activity placing him as the author and creator of the modern Romanian novel. In the "Black on White Letters from a Friend," consisting of 32 letters, C. Negruzzi inaugurates a new genre in Romanian literature, the epistolary.

I am especially indebted to my supervisor and committee chair, Gary Miller, for inspiring and encouraging me to take the challenge of historical linguist and guided me in my journey down to history of discovering faded fragments of language. I also thank him for his invaluable comments and suggestions, for his patience when reading my numerous and voluminous drafts and for always finding the time to discuss them with me, including his prompt answers via e-mail, often during weekend time. I thank Eric Potsdam who turned every stone, making me realize that without his questions, comments and suggestions, many of my analyses included in my dissertation would have been stipulative. I thank him especially for taking the time during his sabbatical and helping me with the organization and the content of Chapter 5. In general, his guidance led to more clarity and better organization of my dissertation. I am grateful to Ann Wehmeyer who always supported me and for her course on Writing Systems, which, besides the excellence of all her courses I took, created the opportunity for me to gather some of the oldest Romanian books and documents, very useful for my dissertation.

  • Critical Reception of Late 19Th Century Iași-Based Music. Alexandru Flechtenmacher
DOI: 10.2478/ajm-2018-0012 Artes. Journal of Musicology no. 17-18 2018 190-206 Critical reception of late 19th century Iași-based music. Alexandru Flechtenmacher DALIA RUSU-PERSIC “George Enescu” National University of the Arts Iași ROMANIA∗ Abstract: In late 19th-century periodicals, music criticism captured only a few details on the composition techniques, the structural organization, the rhythmic-melodic or vocal and stage interpretation of various performances. The press shed light on these pieces only at an informative level, mentioning titles, composers, and interpreters and even omitting some details due to, on the one hand, the authorities’ indifference to the musical phenomenon and, on the other hand, the editors’ sheer ignorance of particular stylistic or musical language features. However, the attempts made by the personalities active in the cultural and artistic life were real and unrelenting, their results being guided by the desire to promote music with specific national traits. This study provides an analytical perspective on the current reception of that social-artistic context. Taking into account that new sources have favored a more detailed and profound investigation of the 19th-century critical phenomenon, our analysis supplements the information presented in the music history studies already published in Romania. Consequently, the first section of this paper approaches the extremely dynamic phenomenon represented by the creation of new journals / newspapers in the 19th century. It is our belief that starting from general journalism we can acquire a better understanding of the development of musical criticism. This research aimed to discover new dimensions of Iași-based music, placing special emphasis on the critical reception of the composer Alexandru Flechtenmacher.

Marginalia. Architectures of Uncertain Margins 181 e Monastery of Curtea de Argeș and Romanian Architectural Heritage in the Late 19th Century Cosmin Minea PhD student, University of Birmingham [email protected] KEYWORDS: Curtea de Argeș; Byzantine architecture; Romanian architecture; “National Style”; André Lecomte du Noüy Introduction* In December 2012, a celebrated exhibition opened at the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest. Under the name “Testimonials. e Frescoes from the Argeș Monastery” the remaining original frescoes of the 16th century Curtea de Argeș Monastery were presented for the rst time to the public after a lengthy process of restoration. Built in the homonymous town in Northern Wallachia, and some 100 km south of the Habsburg city of Hermannstadt (today’s Sibiu), the monastery with its unique aspect and rich exterior decorations has always been described and praised for its aesthetic qualities by foreign travellers and local intellectuals alike (Fig. 1). Now its lost frescoes were presented in a spectacular fashion, with 3D reconstructions and complex installations that aimed to show what was presented as “less than 5% of the original mural painting decoration (...) the only testimonies of the paintings of this iconic monument for the Romanian culture.”1 e short curatorial text about the exhibition concept is both a praise for the remaining frescoes and even more so a lamentation for the lost ones. It parallels a well-established view of the Romanian art by local intellectuals who have perceived it in terms of destruction and survival, placing a great emphasis on the absence of art works that often had greater national symbolism than the surviving ones.
