1 Bishop’s Letter

Every now and again, for those of us who use ‘Facebook’, in addition to finding out what our ‘friends’ are getting up to, an article gets ‘posted’ that stops and makes you think. Such was the following ‘A well-known atheist visited three churches in one day …. this is what he made of it’ was the ‘post’. I opened and read on, and was pleasantly surprised.

The ‘atheist’ in question was a man called Sanderson Jones, a former stand- up comedian who leads the ‘Sunday Assembly’, sometimes known as the ‘atheist church’, whose motto is ‘live better, help often, wonder more’ – not a million miles away it would seem to me from what we mean with our own ‘confident discipleship, joyful service, faithful worship’.

In all three churches, he was impressed by the welcome he received, something he said churches should rejoice in doing well. In the first of three, in addition to the sheer physicality and experience of communion, ‘the idea that the divine is in your mouth’ – his words, it was the attitude of inclusion, of being drawn in, of ‘finding those moments of making sure that people feel included’ that spoke most of all. In the second it was the attention to detail in the worship, the use of modern creative arts, of the clear giving of the best that they had, that spoke of the worth that Church clearly gave to the one that it worshipped. In the third it was the openness to a ‘mystical’ experience, an expectation of encounter with a God who was there, the experience of being prayed for intimately by name, the space provided for ’the reflective side of life’ something he believes to be undervalued by our world at this time.

A positive experience from the churches he visited, from a man with no faith, but wanting purpose and meaning for life. It begs the question, what would he find, if he visited us?

Deanery Healing Service at St Andrew’s Church Halton Holegate Sunday 17th May at 6.00pm

HOLY WEEK IN STICKNEY

When Rev’d Fran first told us of the plans for Holy Week we were quite apprehensive. How would we cope with events every evening with Holy Communion and refreshments to be arranged? We should not have worried as everything worked out well and we had a very exciting and varied week as well as some moving and thought provoking quiet times.

On Monday evening we sang along with our friends The New Name as they led us in well-loved folk songs. Tuesday we were privileged to be joined by the Diocesan Ladies Choir who sang a selection of sacred music interspersed with readings and solos.

On Wednesday we followed the Stations of the Cross in words and pictures, which brought home the horrendous cruelty of the crucifiction.

A change of mood on Maundy Thursday when the Church echoed to the sound of a group of young people playing Taiko drums. There was time for audience participation when under Ashley’s instruction several members had a go and provided a worthy performance after a few minutes instruction. The evening closed with Holy Communion followed by the

7 altar and furnishings being removed to the steady beat of the drums.

Good Friday morning saw us back in church for meditation.

We had our first ever experience of a Sunrise Service on Easter morning. Walking through the village at 6am to the sound of birds welcoming the resurrected Jesus was yet another special time. Entering the Church in semi- darkness and seeing the light gradually increasing as we listened to the readings, lit the Easter Candle outside and celebrated Easter Communion before sharing breakfast was a unique and memorable occasion.

All Age Worship with Holy Communion took place later in the morning when we were joined by a good congregation who enthusiastically sang favourite Easter hymns.

I feel we were blessed this year to have had such an amazing week, and from comments received from those who joined in the effort involved was much appreciated. Who says that being a Christian is boring!

ALL WELCOME

Second Sunday at Six

The Second Sunday at Six worship at Little Steeping Village Hall every month has started its third year of running. This is a fresh expression of church and the worship begins with hot drinks and buns and cakes before settling into some quite radically different styles of worship designed to bring joy and move us closer to a living and loving God.

Among some of the events that the congregation have enjoyed we have held plasticine worship where the people made an item out of plasticine that

8 represented something they wanted to pray for. We have had origami worship where we created doves and shared a story about peace. We have had films on creation and dice prayers where the prayers were decided by the number shown on a thrown dice. At our last service the people collaboratively created psalms using the old game of consequences. These Psalms were then used in the worship that followed. An example of one of the Psalms included this one.....

Lord, your words are balm and your touch is peace because your love is as deep as the oceans and higher than the mountains, you care for us as a father and we are humble before you. You Lord, have made for us a world full of beauty from the blue skies to the green earth. You forgive us when we neglect you, which we sometimes do. Thank you Jesus, because you give our lives a purpose. Therefore, I will always respect you for the pain you went through, which was greater than the pain of doing homework! Amen.

Second Sunday at Six is open to everybody in the deanery without exception, and you are very welcome to join us at any of these worship events. The next Second Sunday at Six will be on Sunday the 10th May in Little Steeping Village Hall. We look forward to seeing you there.

9 Race 4 Life

On Sunday 17th May a large group of women and girls will gather in Louth. Many of them will be dressed in pink so it is a very colourful affair. Some will run the 5K route, others will walk or push wheelchairs but all the participants are there to raise money for Cancer Research. Many of those taking part are doing so in honour of a family member or friend whose life has been affected by cancer.

For the fourth year running my daughter (Lindsay) and granddaughter (Orla) are taking part. Lindsay already has sponsors but Orla is in need of support. If anyone feels they could support her she would be delighted and very grateful. She is providing me with a sponsor form so if you feel able to help please let me know and like Orla I too will be grateful and delighted. Joan Thornett

A big thank you to all those who came and supported our Gift Day in anyway on 18th April. The amount received was £1555. Everyone enjoyed having a chat over a cup of tea whilst getting caught up on local news. With many thanks once again, Geoff and Malcolm.

St Helen’s, East Keal. Pet Service Celebrating God’s Creation

We were delighted with the way our pet service went. God’s fingerprints were all over it! 28 dogs – and ONE CAT! All went smoothly. No skirmishes broke out, they were all very well-behaved (and the animals were also very good!). No howling and whining, even when the hymn-singing kicked off. No accidents on the carpet. Plenty of pet treats at the end and home-made cakes for the human contingent.

Some folks shared some wonderful stories about their pets. All the animals, from both the village and further afield, received a Merit Certificate of Attendance and we raised over £130 for the charity, Blue Cross. Many thanks to Bishop David for his expert leading of the service. People are now asking for it to be an annual event!

12 ERESBY HALL NEWS

Volunteers for the St John's Trust from across the County joined together at the Petwood hotel on Tuesday, March 31st for afternoon tea. This is one of the ways The Trust likes to recognize and thank volunteers for all their support and hard work during the year and to present certificates to people who have reached a particular milestone. Pat Bourn received her award for 5 years service leading the flower arranging team and Symon Crump for his work in teaching art at Eresby Hall. Twelve volunteers from Eresby attended the event and were interested to hear that there are now 157 volunteers across the County.

Digby House residents were presented with a ceramic poppy from the Tower of as two of their residents had actually gone to help with placing the poppies in the moat. This was obviously a very memorable occasion for them.

Donella Savage (photo), the new Manager, attended for the first time. Donella lived in Spilsby for several years before moving nearer to Lincoln and was a member of 2266 squadron of the Air Training Corp which was based in Spilsby for 60 years.

Unfortunately Helena Shelton, the outgoing Manager was too poorly to attend the volunteer celebration, however, staff, residents and volunteers joined together to present Helena with gifts on Thursday, April 2nd to mark her time at Eresby Hall and to say a fond farewell. Helena will be missed by all but promises to visit as often as possible.

The money has now been raised for the Remembrance garden and once the better weather is here to stay work will commence.

15 I am waiting for a parcel to be delivered – this is not the first time a parcel has not arrived on the specified date. I have heard numerous excuses:  we couldn’t find the house,  we tried to ring you but got no reply (unsurprising as I had already told them I would not be in!),  it didn’t fit through the letterbox (slightly surprising as it did the following day!)  the driver was too busy  So I am reminded of the plaintive statement: Patience would be a lot easier if it didn't take so long to get.

In The Stickney Cluster we have started on the process of our Discipleship Development Programme. In April we looked at our context and our vocation, this month we will look at our values as a church, and next month we will explore our vision. It is all designed to encourage us to deepen our individual and corporate discipleship and to be focussed as we work for Church Growth. Will it work? The DDP is certainly not a quick fix, and it is unlikely that our church buildings will become full overnight (if ever!). Patience is indeed a virtue when it comes to Church Growth. But as we work together with a common vision and a shared faith, I am firmly convinced we will encourage others to explore their own relationships with God.

There are new shoots of growth even now across the Deanery. People are exploring confirmation, the musical events during Holy Week brought people in and connected them with the Easter story, there is increasing evidence that our open churches are used for quiet contemplation.

The task can seem almost insurmountable – but by taking small steps, we will go much further than we would if we never started out!

Rev’d Fran

FAMILY SERVICE

The first Sunday of April was Easter Sunday so a special Family Eucharist was led by Reverend Joan Thornett. Before the service Margaret Cook played a selection of favourite Easter hymns. Crucifer was Hilary Astley and acolytes were Rachel and Matthew Hall. The collection was taken by Angharad and Elerie Faulkner. Jane Parker read the lesson and led the prayers.

16 Reverend Joan explained to the children exactly what she was doing, whilst preparing for the Eucharist, to help them understand what was happening. In her talk Joan explained how the disciples probably did not know what to think now Jesus had left them; they were like a rudderless fishing boat. But on the third day the impossible became possible. “It was too good to be true”. Jesus's love won victory over death. God may seem distant to all of us at times but if we open our eyes we will be shown that God is walking beside us and it is not “too good to be true.” Tea and coffee and Easter eggs were served at the end of the service.

The children, with the help of Jane Howsam had coloured in Easter cards for friends and family.

The next Family service will be held on May 3rd at 10.00 when the theme will be ‘Going Round in Circles’.

Here is a photograph showing a Year 5 child placing a daffodil on the Lenten Cross during the Easter Service, which took place on Thursday, 26th March. Rev Fran is supporting the cross and led the service in St Luke’s church.

Children from Key Stage 1 performed a song and the drama group from Year 6 acted out a scene of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet.

Year 4 pupils read out prayers they had written and this service was well supported by parents, as you can see from the second photograph.

20 What stars We Are?

Hello you lovely people, have you stopped to think today about just how special you are?

We are in the days and weeks following Easter, leading up to Pentecost. The solemn keeping of Lent and the crucifixion gave us, as always, so much to think about, so many things to confess and to ask for ways to forge ahead in truth and honesty. The celebration of Jesus our Lord’s resurrection gives us so much to live for and yet all we hear in the media and from many around us is the abject negativity of the world and the hideous happenings to so many of God’s people. We do, I am afraid, take all this abject negativity as an excuse to do nothing, after all, “what difference could we make in the face of such a mountain?” Just look around you, people are so wonderful, doing so many things that do not warrant a second glance or a mention and yet they are the very actions which make our world and our people. Tiny, tiny incidents which should not be disregarded but celebrated and held on to, can you think of some examples? One of my recent ones and there are many I do assure you. This tiny one happened after a church service during our obligatory coffee and cake afterwards, actually another tiny example of togetherness and sharing. We celebrate Rogation Sunday with a local farmer each year, 2015 will take us to Calceby, Will & Tracey Baxter have kindly invited us to their farm. Calceby no longer has a church but a ruin in one of the fields and I have always promised the Baxter family a service in their church, very tongue in cheek, but 2015 will see us gathered at the ruin, weather permitting, for the conclusion of the service. “What on earth is she babbling on about now?” I do hear you sighing. The service, as said, was being discussed during coffee, a lady who had no idea about Calceby church being a ruin, offered her help and said she would provide flowers and anything else needed to decorate the church. This genuine, unbidden offer was wonderful enough, but when the ruin was explained, she did not retract her offer or thought she had made a fool of herself, she confirmed her support, asked for phone numbers and the service has made an amazing start. We are all loved by God, we are in a world full of war and hatred, but we are the ones, who through tiny actions of love and courage do help God’s people to know they are loved and cherished. We do not fight on a front line, but actually we do, God has called each one of us to tell the world that Jesus Christ gave his life for each one of us. Each one of us is called to promote the gospel message. Each one of us is very special, what can we do to help each other to know this truth?

Gleaning for the Beacon School in Ghana.

Over the Lent period St James Church, East Keal Church, Hundleby Church and Partney Church have been involved with the Deanery Gleaning Programme. In ancient Israel those people who were poor were allowed to harvest the leftovers from the fields, they could take any crops, which had been dropped or any of the windfalls from the trees that fruit which had been left in awkward branches. Therefore, the poor could feed themselves through their own work and this was an ancient form of social benefits. Those who owned the fields were expected not to harvest right to the edges of the field or to pick up all of the fruit from their trees so that there would be some left for those who were poor.

In our modern time most of us do not have fields and fruit trees so instead we have been gleaning the monetary change left in our pockets and have collected this in the jars that have been left at the back of the churches mentioned.

People have been immensely generous and have tipped out their pockets of all their leftover pennies and pounds. At the end of Lent this money was counted and between the four churches totalled up to just over £180 so far. This money has been placed in the account ready to be sent to the Beacon School in Ghana, which is our charity for this Lent. To all of you who have contributed, thank you.

ST JAMES’ CHURCH BAG

What shall we do with all the unsold tea towels? Let’s make bags out of them...and that’s what June Dales and Sue Heggs did!

They were sold at various events and given away as presents and they were a real hit. As well as travelling all over the UK it has been reported that these bags have been seen in France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Northern Cyprus and will soon be seen in The Channel Islands and The Scilly Isles.

They are ideal to fold up and put in a pocket. The handles are the right length so the bag doesn’t drag on the floor. These are the positive comments made by the lucky people who own a St James bag. Where has your bag been?

The bad news is...... we have SOLD OUT!!
