  • Kira Kovalenko
Non-Stop Production presents UNCLENCHING THE FISTS a film by KIRA KOVALENKO 97 min - Russia – 2021 – Color - 2,35 - 5.1 INTL PR: INTL SALES: DDA Antoine Guilhem [email protected] [email protected] Photos and press kit can be downloaded from https://www.wildbunch.biz/movie/unclenching-the-fists/ SYNOPSIS In a former mining town in North Ossetia, a young woman struggles to escape the stifling hold of the family she loves as much as she rejects. THE FILM The small mining town of Mizur lies high in the mountains of North Ossetia between steep cliffs. Zaur has settled his family here. He keeps his sons and daughter on a short leash, blind to the line that separates fatherly concern from overprotectiveness. His eldest, Akim, has already run off to the nearest city, Rostov, to find work. Meanwhile, his youngest, Dakko, isn’t entirely sure yet what he wants out of life, while middle child, Ada, is actively planning her own escape. Although she’s already a young woman, her father still insists on treating her like a defenseless little girl. Freeing herself from his strong paternal embrace to finally embark on an independent adult life of her own is proving tougher than she anticipated. But just what is this father trying to protect his daughter from? Kira Kovalenko: The initial inspiration for the story came from a line in Faulkner’s Intruder in the Dust about how, while some people can endure slavery, nobody can stand freedom. The idea of freedom as a burden was the single most important theme for me while I was working on the film.

Corruption as Shared Culpability: Religion, Family, and Society in Andrey Zvyagintsev's Leviathan (2014) Abstract This article engages in close analysis of how Andrey Zvyagintsev depicts corruption and its various manifestations: moral, familial, societal, and institutional, in Leviathan (Leviafan, 2014). While other post- Soviet films address the problem of prevalent corruption in Russia, Zvyagintsev’s work is the first ot provoke strong public reactions, not only from government and Russian Orthodox Church officials, but also from Orthodox and political activist groups. The film demonstrates that the instances of legal and moral failings in one aspect of existence are a sign of a much deeper and wider-ranging problem that affects all other spheres of human experience.

A Book History Study of Michael Radford’s Filmic Production William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS of RHODES UNIVERSITY by BRYONY ROSE HUMPHRIES GREEN March 2008 ABSTRACT Falling within the ambit of the Department of English Literature but with interdisciplinary scope and method, the research undertaken in this thesis examines Michael Radford’s 2004 film production William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice using the Book History approach to textual study. Previously applied almost exclusively to the study of books, Book History examines the text in terms of both its medium and its content, bringing together bibliographical, literary and historical approaches to the study of books within one theoretical paradigm. My research extends this interdisciplinary approach into the filmic medium by using a modified version of Robert Darnton’s “communication circuit” to examine the process of transmission of this Shakespearean film adaptation from creation to reception. The research is not intended as a complete Book History study and even less as a comprehensive investigation of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice . Rather, it uses a Shakespearean case study to bring together the two previously discrete fields of Book History and filmic investigation. Drawing on film studies, literary concepts, cultural and media studies, modern management theory as well as reception theories and with the use of both quantitative and qualitative data, I show Book History to be an eminently useful and constructive approach to the study of film. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I want to thank the Mandela Rhodes Foundation for the funding that allowed me to undertake a Master’s degree.

  • Der Weg Nach Rio in Brazil: Histoire Croisée, Public Diplomacy and Film-Historical Research
Wolfgang Fuhrmann Der Weg nach Rio in Brazil: Histoire Croisée, Public Diplomacy and Film-Historical Research Abstract The article discusses the relevance of the histoire croisée approach that has been only marginally applied to film and cinema historical research. Histoire croisée is an approach to write history from a transnational perspective. It tries to overcome the conceptual shortcomings of comparative and transfer studies and integrates them into its theoretical framework. The case study of a cultural-diplomatic conflict etweenb Brazil and Germany illustrates some of the methodological advantages of the histoire croisée approach. The paper argues that writing historiography from a transnational perspective opens not only new areas of film historicalresearch, it also offers a better understanding of film historical events that otherwise might be overlooked by comparative or transfer studies. Keywords Brazil; diplomacy; histoire croisée; historiography; transnational On 17 March 1931, the Brazilian newspaper Diário de Noticias, based in Rio de Janeiro, published a front-page article with the lurid headline ‘A Film Insulting For Brazil and Its Civilization.’12 The article reported the screening of the German film Der Weg nach Rio/Road to Rio (Manfred Noa, DE 1931), a white slavery genre film, hich,w according to the journalist, depicted Brazil in a derogatory manner and the countries’ then capital as the international centre of white slavery.3 Der Weg nach Rio was never screened in Brazil but only viewed by a small number of Brazilians living in Berlin at the time of its release. However, the article made the film the talk of the day in Brazil.
