This Focus Austria week will provide an international forum for filmmakers to experience first-hand Austria‘s film culture and Vienna. An afternoon walk in Harry Lime‘s Vienna led by historian Dr. Brigitte Timmerman, a visit to Stadtkino to screen Michael Glawogger‘s award-winning documentary MEGACITIES, an evening at the Galerie & Werkstatt NUU, where documentary film producer Johannes Rosenberger will reign as culinary chef preparing dinner from restored old Viennese recipes, a visit to Schloss Belvedere to view the rich art history of Klimt and Schiele, followed by Master Classes in Producing and Screenwriting in association with the Vienna Film Fund, Film Academy and Film Museum will provide the opportunities for a cross-cultural exchange. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Activist and fellow playwright Larry Kramer paid tribute to Martin Sherman by noting that he "has consistently written about his sexuality and has managed to make a living out of it." This is no small feat for an artist whose peers have more often than not created their art from inside the closet. Best known for his groundbreaking play Bent (1978), this iconoclastic playwright and screenwriter has created an impressive body of work. The only child of Russian-Jewish parents, Sherman was born in Philadelphia on December 22, 1938, but grew up in Camden, New Jersey. His father was an attorney. Yiddish was spoken at home; and as his grandparents were observant, they kept a Kosher home. Frequent theater trips to Philadelphia and New York City helped Sherman get through adolescence. Sherman was educated at Boston University, where he received a B.A. and an M.F.A. in theater. Although trained as an actor, he was early drawn to writing plays. He describes his early efforts as "terrible," though some were given Off-Off-Broadway productions by the Herbert Berghof Playwrights Foundation, including the one-act play Next Year in Jerusalem (1968). In Sherman's own account, a 1975 production of his play Passing By by London's Gay Sweatshop "was the first good production I'd ever had of anything." The story of the relationship between two men--a painter and a diver--in New York, whose bond is tested by illness and by their focus on career goals, Passing By and another early gay-themed play, Cracks (1975), set in the Los Angeles home of a recently murdered rock star, anticipate his breakthrough achievement in Bent but fail to rise to the latter's moral seriousness.

You are not only in reality but also inside the inner workings of this woman. The fire is a strange and extemporal moment, mysterious at this point in the film because the viewer doesn’t yet understand its significance. So from the start there is a dramatic challenge, a game between what is real and unreal, dream and nightmare.

    A Book History Study of Michael Radford’s Filmic Production William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS of RHODES UNIVERSITY by BRYONY ROSE HUMPHRIES GREEN March 2008 ABSTRACT Falling within the ambit of the Department of English Literature but with interdisciplinary scope and method, the research undertaken in this thesis examines Michael Radford’s 2004 film production William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice using the Book History approach to textual study. Previously applied almost exclusively to the study of books, Book History examines the text in terms of both its medium and its content, bringing together bibliographical, literary and historical approaches to the study of books within one theoretical paradigm. My research extends this interdisciplinary approach into the filmic medium by using a modified version of Robert Darnton’s “communication circuit” to examine the process of transmission of this Shakespearean film adaptation from creation to reception. The research is not intended as a complete Book History study and even less as a comprehensive investigation of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice . Rather, it uses a Shakespearean case study to bring together the two previously discrete fields of Book History and filmic investigation. Drawing on film studies, literary concepts, cultural and media studies, modern management theory as well as reception theories and with the use of both quantitative and qualitative data, I show Book History to be an eminently useful and constructive approach to the study of film. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I want to thank the Mandela Rhodes Foundation for the funding that allowed me to undertake a Master’s degree.

Entretien avec Bettina Oberli Réalisatrice Vous êtes très connue dans les pays de langue allemande, inconnue ici. Quels sont les chemins qui vous ont conduit à la réalisation ? C’est vrai que j’ai travaillé dans des zones germanophones jusqu’à présent. Il existe un fossé entre la culture des régions de langue française et celles dans lesquelles on parle allemand – je remarque ça même en Suisse, entre Suisse-Allemands et Romands. On lit d’autres livres, on écoute d’autres musiques et souvent, on regarde d’autres films. J’ai depuis toujours ressenti ce besoin, ce moteur qui me pousse à créer quelque chose, un univers. À travers le cinéma, je peux comprendre la vie dans sa complexité, la penser ou la ressentir différemment, en faire une abstraction. J’ai grandi entre l’île de Samoa, dans le Pacifique, et les Alpes Suisses, bien loin d’un lieu où le cinéma était considéré comme une activité possible. Je n’avais aucune connaissance de ce monde, mais j’aimais voir des films.

    Biography: Jocelyn Pook Jocelyn Pook is one of the UK’s most versatile composers, having written extensively for stage, screen, opera house and concert hall. She has established an international reputation as a highly original composer winning her numerous awards and nominations including a Golden Globe, an Olivier and two British Composer Awards. Often remembered for her film score to Eyes Wide Shut, which won her a Chicago Film Award and a Golden Globe nomination, Pook has worked with some of the world’s leading directors, musicians, artists and arts institutions – including Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, the Royal Opera House, BBC Proms, Andrew Motion, Peter Gabriel, Massive Attack and Laurie Anderson. Pook has also written film score to Michael Radford’s The Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino, which featured the voice of countertenor Andreas Scholl and was nominated for a Classical Brit Award. Other notable film scores include Brick Lane directed by Sarah Gavron and a piece for the soundtrack to Gangs of New York directed by Martin Scorsese. With a blossoming reputation as a composer of electro-acoustic works and music for the concert platform, Pook continues to celebrate the diversity of the human voice. Her first opera Ingerland was commissioned and produced by ROH2 for the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio in June 2010. The BBC Proms and The King’s Singers commissioned to collaborate with the Poet Laureate Andrew Motion on a work entitled Mobile. Portraits in Absentia was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and is a collage of sound, voice, music and words woven from the messages left on her answerphone.
