Sparkling Wines Sparkling wines Only sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France may be called Champagne. South African sparkling wines made in the traditional French method (methode champenoise) are referred to as Methode Cap Classiques or MCC’s. Wine that has been impregnated with CO2 bubbles is simply termed sparkling wine whereas MCC’s undergo a second fermentation in the bottle to create the sought after bubbles. De Wetshof MCC Brut (Method Cap Classique, dry) An elegant brut Methode Cap Classique made from 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir grapes has yeasty citrus aromas and zesty mineral flavours. Small bubbles tingle on the long, lingering palate. This MCC is the ideal companion to all festive occasions. 750ml N$ 459.00 Villiera Tradition Brut (Method Cap Classique, dry) This bottle fermented sparkling wine is a blend of red and white grapes displaying the full, balanced yeasty complexity synonymous with a wine made in this style. The wine retains its fresh racy zestiness that is a result of crisp acidity and delicate fruit. 375ml N$ 185.00 750ml N$ 325.00 L’Ormarins Classique Brut (dry) This sparkling wine has a delicate peach hue and an appealing aroma of candied apple, citrus pith and light flinty, limestone nuance. This sparkling drink boasts with exotic fruit flavours that will make you think of pineapple, banana and granadilla. 750ml N$ 215.00 Sauvignon Blanc Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular white wines, which originates from the Bordeaux region in France. It is often referred to as “grassy,” and is known for its refreshing crispness, which is due to its high levels of acidity and low amounts of sugar. This wine is referred to be dry and can be paired with pork, vegetable or salad dishes. Delheim Sauvignon Blanc A vibrant and fruity wine with rich gooseberry and grapefruit flavours. It has a fresh asparagus undertone supported by lime aromas. 750ml N$ 170.00 Villiera Sauvignon Blanc In keeping with the trend towards fruit driven wines this Sauvignon Blanc displays intense varietal character including gooseberry and fig flavours. 750ml N$ 230.00 Rustenberg Stellenbosh Sauvignon Blanc This is a slightly fuller, richer style of Sauvignon Blanc without relying on the influence of oak. The intrinsic Sauvignon Blanc characteristics of green pepper, asparagus and gooseberry are to be found in this wine, with underlying tones of pineapple and passion fruit 750ml N$ 195.00 Middelvlei Rooster Sauvignon Blanc The Rooster Sauvignon Blanc is a fresh and fruity white wine which is oaked and therefore has a slight Chardonnay style. 750ml N$ 235.00 Glass N$ 65.00 Protea Sauvignon Blanc The palate is bold and vivid with more grapefruit and lemon tang but balanced beautifully by ripe, juicy nectarine fruit notes. It has fresh but with a dry flinty nuance as a counterpoint. 750ml N$ 175.00 Hoopenburg Sauvignon Blanc This Sauvignon Blanc is fruit driven with loads of freshness and nice sucrose. You can expect granadilla and pear aromas which follow through on the palate. 750ml N$ 159.00 Peter Falke Sauvignon Blanc The wine dazzles with intense aromas of tropical and citrus fruits. The palate bursts with passion fruit complemented by hints of fresh cut lemon grass. Enjoy its clean, fresh and zippy taste. 750ml N$ 245.00 Chardonnay Chardonnay is the Queen of all white wines. It is believed to have originated in the Burgundy wine region of eastern France but is now grown wherever wine is produced. It is usually rather a dry white wine. Due to the wide range of styles, Chardonnay has the potential to be paired with chicken, delicate fish and seafood dishes. Protea Chardonnay This Chardonnay has an attractive tropical bouquet with whiffs of fresh pear, pineapple and rock melon. Hints of zesty lime and nectarine add complexity and balance to the palate as well as providing elegance and structure to the wine. 750ml N$ 220.00 Glass N$ 62.00 Vergelegen Premium Chardonnay This Chardonnay shows an attractive lemony yellow-green colour with a complex nose of citrus, peach, tropical fruit and mineral tones. The palate is long and full with delicate wooding. 750ml N$ 395.00 De Wetshof Finesse Chardonnay The De Wetshof Chadonnay has strong citrus flavours with a pronounced nuttiness on the mid- palate which leads through to a clean finish with zesty citrus notes. 750ml N$ 295.00 Rustenberg Stellenbosh Chardonnay A traditionally made, barrel fermented Chardonnay with aromas of apricot, coconut and orange peel followed by flavours of marzipan, sponge cake and citrus, rounded off with carefully judged oak and balanced, fresh acidity. 750ml N$ 365.00 The Stellenbosh Reserve Moederkerk Chardonnay Aromas of fresh citrus, lime and hints of lemon zest come to the fore, with elegant pineapple notes that support the initial tropical impression. There are undertones of guava and paw-paw which add to the creamy style of the wine. 750ml N$ 285.00 Middelvlei Chardonnay (unoaked) The nose and palate show hints of tropical fruit and a generous touch of spice. Luscious peach and guava flavours add to the fruitiness of this elegant wine. 750ml N$ 259.00 Riesling Riesling is a very noble grape originally from the Rhine region of southwestern Germany. It is an aromatic grape variety displaying flowery almost perfumed aromas, as well as high acidity. De Wetshof Rhine Riesling This Riesling is a crisp and delicate wine. The nose and palate are abundantly complex with a typically spicy deep fruity flavour. Danie De Wet, owner of De Wetshof Estate pioneered the noble white varieties of Europe in South Africa and today specialises in superior white wines exclusively. 750ml N$ 369.00 Pinot Grigio While most believe Pinot Grigio originated in Italy, it was actually born, like many of the most popular grapes of the world, in France, where it is known as Pinot Gris. Thought to be a mutation of the red grape Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris’ skins are not green like other white grapes, but instead have a greyish blue hue, which is what gives them their name. Protea Pinot Grigio The Pniot Grigio is a wine with enticing fresh notes of pear, nectarine and honeydew melon with a gentle lemon undertone. The palate is tangy with crisp, zippy citrus vivacity coming through. 750ml N$ 175.00 Chenin Blanc Chenin Blanc was born in the Loire Valley in France; with reports tracing the white wine grape back as far as the 9th century. Many believe that in 1655 Jan Van Riebeeck took the grape vines from France and first planted the grape at his home vineyard in South Africa. Chenin Blanc is a zesty and crisp wine to be paired with seafood and pasta dishes. Erongo Mountain Chenin Blanc This proudly Namibian Chenin Blanc has aromas of green apples, litchis and melons. It is a bright refreshing white wine. 750ml N$ 235.00 Glass N$ 75.00 Protea Chenin Blanc The Protea Chenin Blanc has a crisp citrus flavour with a tangy lemon vibrancy. It is a lively wine with a lovely light body and gentle persistence. 750ml N$ 175.00 Viliera Chenin Blanc The wine has intense fruit and honey with a hint of wood spice on the nose, including pineapple, guava and citrus. On the palate it is rich and full bodied with good balance and a long finish. 750ml N$ 190.00 Hoopenburg Chenin Blanc Through the cool climate in the Stellenbosh region it gives the wine body and fruit intensity. The nose of the wine is pure fruit flavours with a refreshing finish. 750ml N$ 165.00 Sweet White Blend If you’re looking for a sweet white wine the Gewürztraminer should be your selection. Grünberger Freudenlese (sweet) The Grünberger Freudenlese is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. On the palate it is well balanced with a delicate sweetness and a refreshing, fruity taste. 750ml N$ 145.00 Rosé wines A Rosé is a type of wine that incorporates some colour from the grape skins, but not enough to qualify it as a red wine. It may be the oldest known type of wine, as it is straightforward to make. When Rosé wine is the primary product, it is produced with the skin contact method. Black-skinned grapes are crushed and the skins are allowed to remain in contact with the juice for a short period, typically one to three days.

  • A Brief History of Wine in South Africa Stefan K
European Review - Fall 2014 (in press) A brief history of wine in South Africa Stefan K. Estreicher Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-1051, USA Vitis vinifera was first planted in South Africa by the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. The first wine farms, in which the French Huguenots participated – were land grants given by another Dutchman, Simon Van der Stel. He also established (for himself) the Constantia estate. The Constantia wine later became one of the most celebrated wines in the world. The decline of the South African wine industry in the late 1800’s was caused by the combination of natural disasters (mildew, phylloxera) and the consequences of wars and political events in Europe. Despite the reorganization imposed by the KWV cooperative, recovery was slow because of the embargo against the Apartheid regime. Since the 1990s, a large number of new wineries – often, small family operations – have been created. South African wines are now available in many markets. Some of these wines can compete with the best in the world. Stefan K. Estreicher received his PhD in Physics from the University of Zürich. He is currently Paul Whitfield Horn Professor in the Physics Department at Texas Tech University. His biography can be found at http://jupiter.phys.ttu.edu/stefanke. One of his hobbies is the history of wine. He published ‘A Brief History of Wine in Spain’ (European Review 21 (2), 209-239, 2013) and ‘Wine, from Neolithic Times to the 21st Century’ (Algora, New York, 2006). The earliest evidence of wine on the African continent comes from Abydos in Southern Egypt.

sundownerFOR THE INSPIRED TRAVELLER • SUMMER 2020 INSIDE EGYPT SWEDEN JAPAN SCOTLAND FOUNDER’S NOTE WELCOME TO OUR SUMMER 2020 ISSUE s passionate travellers, we all share the desire to experience new destinations and different cultures with authenticity, privileged access and creature comforts. I have been fortunate, over the past 12 months, to do just that, discovering some really remote and captivating places, and people, that have long intrigued me. I farewelled A2018 in the icy reaches of Antarctica where a small group of adventurers joined me on an extraordinary expedition to the South Pole that was nothing short of exhilarating. I visited India where regal experiences, vintage cars, tigers and turban tying were all wonderful encounters overlaid with rich local flavour. Kenya, my childhood home, beckoned where I was thrilled to check into the elaborate new luxury suite at Sanctuary Olonana named in my honour – a sophisticated and secluded retreat in one of my favourite safari destinations. In Europe, I visited Seville for the WTTC Global Travel Summit, St Petersburg during the White Nights festival, and admired the extraordinary garden designs and horticultural highlights of the Chelsea Flower Show. Most recently I was joined by 14 guests on an expedition through Ethiopia where we travelled in a fleet of helicopters the length of the country. I was completely humbled by the experiences we had – private Mass in a rock-cut church at Lalibela, sunrise beside sulphur springs in the Danakil Depression, a close-up inspection of the fossilised hominid ‘Lucy’ in Addis Ababa, hiking in the Simien Mountains and encounters with the rare tribes of the Omo Valley.

© COPYRIGHT by Jesus Bores-Lazo 2016 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Dedicated to my wife, Juana, our children—Juana, Julia, Jesus, Jimena, and Juncal—and to our families for their love and support. Life has been very generous to me mainly because of you. Research has taken much of our time together but never forget to listen, study, work hard, travel, and learn, using your knowledge and capacities to be happy, good people, and restless dreamers permanently inspiring those around you—no matter how far they might be or how different they are—sharing values, ideas and actions. GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS: A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO FOSTER TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT UNDER THE TRANSATLANTIC TRADE AND INVESTMENT PARTNERSHIP AND THE TRIPS AGREEMENT. THE CASE OF BELIZEAN BANANAS BY Jesus Bores-Lazo ABSTRACT Geographical Indications (GIs) are a major intellectual asset as a tool for ensuring the benefits and distinctiveness of unique agricultural products while protecting consumer interests. Furthermore, GIs—as indicators of quality, reputation, and other characteristics linked to origin—serve as a legal and economic mechanism for development, market access, local distribution of added value, preservation of diversity and cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability. Recent inclusion of GIs regulations within important trade agreements signed by the European Union (South Korea, Central America and Canada), announce a very interesting negotiation under the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP) with the United States and the revision of the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights Agreement (TRIPS Agreement). Based on the complexities of existing models for the protection of agricultural products through traditional trademarks or a sui generis GI system, this research provides a new concept of GIs protection including certification, registration, fair trade, and the interest of developing countries to overcome the current legal schemes.
