Sparkling Wines Sparkling wines Only sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France may be called Champagne. South African sparkling wines made in the traditional French method (methode champenoise) are referred to as Methode Cap Classiques or MCC’s. Wine that has been impregnated with CO2 bubbles is simply termed sparkling wine whereas MCC’s undergo a second fermentation in the bottle to create the sought after bubbles. Villiera Tradition Brut (Method Cap Classique, dry) This bottle fermented sparkling wine is a blend of red and white grapes displaying the full, balanced yeasty complexity synonymous with a wine made in this style. Chenin Blanc is a zesty and crisp wine to be paired with seafood and pasta dishes. Protea Chenin Blanc The Protea Chenin Blanc has a crisp citrus flavour with a tangy lemon vibrancy. It is a lively wine with a lovely light body and gentle persistence. 750ml N$ 180.00 Hoopenburg Chenin Blanc Through the cool climate in the Stellenbosh region it gives the wine body and fruit intensity. The nose of the wine is pure fruit flavours with a refreshing finish. 750ml N$ 175.00 Pinot Grigio While most believe Pinot Grigio originated in Italy, it was actually born, like many of the most popular grapes of the world, in France, where it is known as Pinot Gris. Thought to be a mutation of the red grape Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris’ skins are not green like other white grapes, but instead have a greyish blue hue, which is what gives them their name. Protea Pinot Grigio The Pinot Grigio is a wine with enticing fresh notes of pear, nectarine and honeydew melon with a gentle lemon undertone. The palate is tangy with crisp, zippy citrus vivacity coming through. 750ml N$ 180.00 Carafe N$ 59.00 Rosé wines A Rosé is a type of wine that incorporates some colour from the grape skins, but not enough to qualify it as a red wine. It may be the oldest known type of wine, as it is straightforward to make. When Rosé wine is the primary product, it is produced with the skin contact method. Black-skinned grapes are crushed and the skins are allowed to remain in contact with the juice for a short period, typically one to three days. The must is then pressed and the skins are discarded, not left in contact throughout fermentation as with red wine making. Rosé can easily be paired with poultry, pork or seafood dishes. Protea Rosé (dry) This dry Rosé has gentle aromas of nectarine and lemon zest, with light fruity hints of plum and red cherry. The Protea Rosé is a lively, vibrant wine. 750ml N$ 180.00 De Grendel Rosé (dry) The De Grendel Rosé is dry however still exceptionally floral and perfumed on the nose with enticingly sweet nuances of lemon and lime carried out of the glass by wafts of Turkish delight and candy floss. 750ml N$ 185.00 Peter Falke Blanc de Noir (Rosé, semi-sweet) This Rosé has intense flavours of red fruits and honeycomb It is light onion skin in colour. The Peter Falke Rosé has a well-rounded palate with a creamy fullness and ends with lovely strawberries on the aftertaste. 750ml N$ 290.00 Delheim Pinotage Rosé (semi-sweet) The Delheim Pinotage Rosé is vibrant and light pink in colour. It has concentrated cranberry and pomegranate aromas filled with floral undertones. 750ml N$ 175.00 Carafe N$ 58.00 Cabernet Sauvignon In the 17th century in southwestern France, an accidental breeding occurred between a red Cabernet Franc grape and a white Sauvignon Blanc grape and thus the most popular grape Cabernet Sauvignon was born. The wine is usually dry and has fruity flavours of cassis, and dark fruits such as cherries, along with a hint of vanilla that comes from the wine aging in the oak. The Cabernet Sauvignon has the potential to be paired with beef dishes, especially steaks. Protea Cabernet Sauvignon This Cabernet Sauvignon is juicy and softly rounded. It has appealing aromas of black berry fruits. It has a gentle spice and a cocoa element that adds richness and complexity to the palate. 750ml N$ 190.00 Hoopenburg Cabernet Sauvignon The Hoopenburg Cabernet Sauvignon is a smooth and rich, multi-layered wine with good freshness and notes of raspberries.

  • A Brief History of Wine in South Africa Stefan K
European Review - Fall 2014 (in press) A brief history of wine in South Africa Stefan K. Estreicher Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-1051, USA Vitis vinifera was first planted in South Africa by the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. The first wine farms, in which the French Huguenots participated – were land grants given by another Dutchman, Simon Van der Stel. He also established (for himself) the Constantia estate. The Constantia wine later became one of the most celebrated wines in the world. The decline of the South African wine industry in the late 1800’s was caused by the combination of natural disasters (mildew, phylloxera) and the consequences of wars and political events in Europe. Despite the reorganization imposed by the KWV cooperative, recovery was slow because of the embargo against the Apartheid regime. Since the 1990s, a large number of new wineries – often, small family operations – have been created. South African wines are now available in many markets. Some of these wines can compete with the best in the world. Stefan K. Estreicher received his PhD in Physics from the University of Zürich. He is currently Paul Whitfield Horn Professor in the Physics Department at Texas Tech University. His biography can be found at http://jupiter.phys.ttu.edu/stefanke. One of his hobbies is the history of wine. He published ‘A Brief History of Wine in Spain’ (European Review 21 (2), 209-239, 2013) and ‘Wine, from Neolithic Times to the 21st Century’ (Algora, New York, 2006). The earliest evidence of wine on the African continent comes from Abydos in Southern Egypt.
