So all of a sudden it happens my favorite song ended up as number one, and lets face it… WOW, who knew anything about Celine Dion back in 1988? The Swiss entry, ”Ne partez pas sans moi” stole the crown this year at the end of the voting, thanks to Yugoslavias jury for some reason agreed with the French singer Gerard Lenorman that his entry was of the same class as ”My way” (”Comme d´habitude”). And I can imagine that the UK singer Scott Fitzgerald was a bit surprised over the outcome. In ans case, not only Celine Dion started her way to success this year, also Lara Fabian entered, but for Luxembourg. So how did my list compare to the final result this year. We had some really good entries but 1988 must be seen as a middle year even if songs like ”Pu og peir”, ”Nauravat Silmät muistetaan”, ”La chica que yo quiro” and ”Ka du se hva jeg sa”. Sweden sent our number one musical star Mr Tommy Körberg who went from the stages of the London musical scene to Eurovision (his second try) and for Swedish media it was all in the bag, Eurovision from Sweden 1989.. It turned out to be very wrong and the Swedish delegation blamed Tommys bad cold and voice problems.

In chapters one and two, I look in detail at Calvin's own writings. I begin by examining exactly what type of visual art he rejected and what type he affirmed. I then look at how his eschatology and epistemology, particularly his use of the metaphor of mirror, allow us to argue for the placing of certain types of art within Reformed churches, notably history and landscape paintings.

Language Socialization and Linguistic Ideologies Among Israeli Emissaries in the United States by Shlomy Kattan A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Patricia Baquedano-López, Chair Professor Claire J. Kramsch Professor Daniel Boyarin Spring 2010 ABSTRACT Language Socialization and Linguistic Ideologies Among Israeli Emissaries in the United States by Shlomy Kattan Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Berkeley Professor Patricia Baquedano-López, Chair ! Research in both the anthropology and sociology of education has increasingly come to consider the institutional e"ects of migration, globalization, and transnationalism on learning environments. Yet, most studies examining transmigration and education have only looked at migrant children in schools rather than at the transitions they undergo as transnationals across settings. We know little of the linguistic and socializing practices that occur during migrants’ transitions from place to place and how they come to de#ne the migratory and educational experience for transnational children. ! This multi-sited, global ethnography examines language socialization practices and linguistic ideologies among families of Israeli emissaries (shlichim) employed by the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI). The study documented the transitions undergone by families with school-age children in the months of their preparation for their move from Israel to the United States and during the #rst year and-a-half in the U.S.. Data collection for this project took place in both Israel and New York at the homes of the families, the children’s schools, peer group activities, extracurricular programs, play, and summer camp.

  • Israel As Homotopia: Language, Space, and Vicious Belonging TOMMASO M
Language in Society 48, 607–628. doi:10.1017/S0047404519000356 Israel as homotopia: Language, space, and vicious belonging TOMMASO M. MILANIa,b AND EREZ LEVONc aGöteborgs universitet, Sweden bUniversity of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg cQueen Mary University of London, UK ABSTRACT Israel has recently succeeded in presenting itself as an attractive haven for LGBT constituencies. In this article, we investigate how this affective traction operates in practice, along with the ambiguous entanglement of normativity and antinormativity as expressed in the agency of some gay Palestinian Israe- lis vis-à-vis the Israeli homonationalist project. For this purpose, we analyze the documentary Oriented (2015), produced by the British director Jake Witzenfeld together with the Palestinian collective Qambuta Productions. More specifically, the aim of the article is twofold. From a theoretical per- spective, we seek to demonstrate how Foucault’s notion of heterotopia provides a useful framework for understanding the spatial component of Palestinian Israeli experience, and the push and pull of conflicted identity projects more generally. Empirically, we illustrate how Israel is a homotopia, an inherently ambivalent place that is simultaneously utopian and dystopian, and that generates what we call vicious belonging. (Code-switching, hetero- topia, homonationalism, normativity, pinkwashing, sexuality, space)* INTRODUCTION Over the last few years, Israel has presented itself as a modern haven for gay and lesbian constituencies—both tourists and locals—within an allegedly retrograde and oppressive Middle East. Labeled as ‘homonationalism’ and/or ‘pinkwashing’, Israel’s nation-branding strategies have been scrutinized in a burgeoning body of work within queer studies and activism (see e.g. Puar 2007, 2011).
