  • MIKIO NARUSE: a MASTER of the JAPANESE CINEMA Opens at Moma September 23
The Museum of Modern Art Department of Film 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART For Immediate Release September 1985 MIKIO NARUSE: A MASTER OF THE JAPANESE CINEMA Opens at MoMA September 23 The distinctly Japanese world view of director Mikio Naruse is the subject of MIKIO NARUSE: A MASTER OF THE JAPANESE CINEMA, an exhibition of twenty-five subtitled films to be screened from September 23 to October 22, 1985* in The Museum of Modern Art's Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 1. Fourteen additional works will supplement the eleven films in last year's Naruse retrospective, which was organized by the Japan Society and the Museum's Department of Film (complete schedule attached). Naruse (1905-1965) held a darker view of the human condition than either Ozu or Mizoguchi, two Japanese directors with whom he is usually linked. His home dramas exposed the rigidity of the customs of daily life and the inflexibility of family bonds. Naruse scholar Audie Bock, who helped to organize the exhibition, states that "the determined characters of the Naruse film never give up. A stubborn dedication to their own self-respect in the face of overwhelming crassness, vulgarity, and exploitation, from even those who should be most sensitive and protective toward the individual, lends Naruse's heroines a distinctive nobility." Emotionalism and lyricism were a part of Naruse's richly detailed pictorial style, in spite of his basic defiant vision. He worked for forty-seven years within the studio system, yet refused to compromise on his exposure of life's falsehoods.

  • April 2017 Hiro Club News No
hiro club news For your cultural life in Hiroshima 招き猫 Maneki-neko (beckoning cat) Ornamental maneki-neko (beckoning cats) have been popular since the middle of the Edo period (1603- 1868) as good-luck talismans. Made of clay, porcelain, papier-mâché, wood, or plastic, they are believed to bring good business to shops and restaurants. They are also often displayed as a sign of welcome in the genkan entrance of houses. The cat is sitting, but its tail is usually not visible. One of its paws is lifted close to its ear. It is beckoning in Japanese style – with the palm facing outward rather than the palm-inward style of Western beckoning. There are two basic types: cats with the right-paw raised are believed to bring good luck in business finance; those with the left-paw raised are for welcoming customers or guests. The length of the paw varies – the longer it is, the greater the reach of fortune. There are a few with both paws raised, but many people steer clear of them saying that it’s not wise to be too greedy. Many maneki-neko are based on a tortoiseshell cat appearance and are painted white with red ears and collars, a color connected with the good health of children (Abstracted from 『ニッポン風物詩』, p63, IBC パブリ ッシング). Some exhibitions related to maneki-neko and cats will be held this spring (see the Museums section for more information). The special exhibition of Onomichi City Museum of Art is an unique exhibition to introduce cat-themed art works from the Edo Period (A.D.

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE RETROSPECTIVE OF RARELY SCREENED FILMS BY TOMU UCHIDA The 19-Film Retrospective Features the International Premiere of Dotanba (The Eleventh Hour) (1957) Tomu Uchida: A Retrospective October 21–November 7, 2016 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters NEW YORK, October 7, 2016—The Museum of Modern Art presents a 19-film retrospective of Japanese filmmaker Tomu Uchida, whose films are rarely seen outside his home country, from October 21 to November 7 in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. MoMA’s retrospective, the most extensive ever held outside Japan, includes works from the early 1930s through the late 1960s, when Uchida’s films tracked monumental social and political changes in Japan with a cinematic flair that puts the director among legends like Masaki Kobayashi and Kihachi Okamoto. The exhibition features a brand-new and newly subtitled print of Kagirinaki zenshin (Unending Advance) (1937). Dotanba (The Eleventh Hour), rarely screened even in Japan, will make its international premiere at MoMA. Working within the Japanese studio system, Uchida proved to be a dexterous, adaptable visionary comfortable at the helm of any production—from samurai films, thrillers, and literary adaptations to social satire and even a pseudo-Western set in Japan’s “Wild North” of Hokkaido. Uchida started making films during the silent period, found his career as a director interrupted by a decade spent in Manchuria at the end of WWII, and later returned to Japan to amass a rich and far-reaching body of work. Tomu Uchida: A Retrospective is organized by La Frances Hui, Associate Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art, in collaboration with independent curators Alexander Jacoby and Johan Nordström, and the National Film Center, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

W filmach Naruse można dostrzec odzwierciedlenie zachodzących przemian oby- czajowych i gospodarczych, odbicie ówczesnych problemów życia codziennego, a przede wszystkim analizę ideologicznych uwarunkowań procesu modernizacji oraz miejsca ko- biety w nowoczesnym społeczeństwie.
