Sanchu Uprising: Voices at Dawn Tag 新しき民 リアル鬼ごっこ WELCOME TO THE JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2016 The continued collaboration between the Embassy of Japan and access>cinema has now reached its eighth year. Without the support of the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation, it wouldn’t have been possible. This year we will have 22 different films showing in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dundalk, Waterford, Sligo and of course, Dublin. We are delighted so many people throughout Ireland will get to experience these fantastic films. This year’s programme is one of the best yet, including films such as 100 Yen Love, a multi- award winning drama about how one argument can help transform your life. Nominated as Japan’s selection for Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Academy Awards, this film will surely warm your heart. When Marnie Was There, nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Academy Awards, is a Studio Ghibli produced animation telling the story of Anna, and her friendship with Marnie, who promises to keep her secrets from everyone. If you’re a fan of superstar idol Atsuko Maeda, we have two of her films: Initiation Love, a romance with a dark twist, and Tamako in Moratorium about an unemployed university graduate living with her father. 2016 is the 5th anniversary of the Great East Japan earthquake. Joy of Man’s Desiring is a film that explores the impact an unnamed earthquake has on children who lost their parents in the disaster. Informed by the director’s own childhood experience after the 1995 Kobe earthquake this film won a special mention at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. We are always looking for more ways to introduce Japanese culture to Irish people, especially as we approach 2017 when Ireland and Japan celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations. If you have any suggestions or comments, they are always welcome. Enjoy & Arigato! Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

  • Sight & Sound Films of 2007
Sight & Sound Films of 2007 Each year we ask a selection of our contributors - reviewers and critics from around the world - for their five films of the year. It's a very loosely policed subjective selection, based on films the writer has seen and enjoyed that year, and we don't deny them the choice of films that haven't yet reached the UK. And we don't give them much time to ponder, either - just about a week. So below you'll find the familiar and the obscure, the new and the old. From this we put together the top ten you see here. What distinguishes this particular list is that it's been drawn up from one of the best years for all-round quality I can remember. 2007 has seen some extraordinary films. So all of the films in the ten are must-sees and so are many more. Enjoy. - Nick James, Editor. 1 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu) 2 Inland Empire (David Lynch) 3 Zodiac (David Fincher) = 4 I’m Not There (Todd Haynes) The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) 6 Silent Light (Carlos Reygadas) = 7 The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik) Syndromes and a Century (Apichatpong Weerasethakul) No Country for Old Men (Ethan and Joel Coen) Eastern Promises (David Cronenberg) 1 Table of Contents – alphabetical by critic Gilbert Adair (Critic and author, UK)............................................................................................4 Kaleem Aftab (Critic, The Independent, UK)...............................................................................4 Geoff Andrew (Critic

  • The Thin Red Line
THE THIN RED LINE by Terrence Malick Based on the Novel by James Jones USE FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY To the Memory of James Jones And Those Who Served With Him They Live With Us It was an act of love. Those men on the line were my family, my home. They were closer to me than I can say, closer than my friends had been or ever would be. They had never let me down, and I could never do it to them. I had to be with them, rather than let them down and me live with the knowledge that I might have saved them. Men, I now know, do not fight for flag or country, for the Marine Corps or glory or any other abstraction. They fight for one another. Any man in combat who lacks comrades who will die for him, or for whom he is willing to die, is not a man at all. He is truly damned. Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

THE SUMMIT A Chronicle of Stones (TSURUGIDAKE: TEN NO KI) A Toei/Fuji TV Production Director: Daisaku Kimura Cast: Tadanobu Asano (“Mongol” “Invisible Waves” “Kabei - Our Mother”) Teruyuki Kagawa (“Tokyo Sonata” “Tokyo!”) Toru Nakamura (“2009 Lost Memories” “Purple Butterfly”) Ryuhei Matsuda (“Gohatto -Taboo-“ “Nightmare Detective”) Aoi Miyazaki (“Atsuhime” (TV) “Nana” “Heavenly Forest”) Koji Yakusho (“Babel” “Silk” “Memoirs of a Geisha”) In 1907, a band of men challenged Japan’s last unconquered mountain, in order to complete a map of their nation. Mt. Tsurugidake - Located in Tateyama mountain range in the Northern Alps in Toyama Prefecture, Mt. Tsurugidake stands 2999m above sea level. Tsurugidake is renowned as a difficult mountain and since the beginning of historical records, it has been designated as the “god” for those engaged in mountain asceticism-shamanism and sometimes referred as “needle mountain” or “mountain of death” for its inaccessibility. Neither for fame, nor for profit, the men staked their lives on an impossible mission, for nothing more than a map. This true story gives us a frank view of the noble spirit of devotion and royal spirit, gradually becoming lost to the society of today. “This work is certainly not a film about the mountains: rather, it is a tale of human emotions and feelings and a film about life, set against the background of the mountains.” -Dir. Daisaku Kimura To realistically depict the noble existence of the climbers, Daisaku Kimura, a veteran cinematographer who filmed “Mount Hakkoda” (1977) “Virus: Day of Resurrection (Fukkatsu no Hi)” (1980) and “Poppoya-Railroad Man” (1999) challenged the shooting together with the hand-picked staff and cast set off like a group of mountaineers to challenge the beautiful yet cruel Mt.

However, one of the jurors (Henry Fonda), reluctant to send the youngster to his death without any debate, returns a vote of not guilty. From this single event, the jurors begin to re-evaluate the case, as they look at the murder - and themselves - in a fresh light. 3.
