Mamoru Hosoda has become the most noted animation director in the world. Why do his works appeal to people of all generations? His stories are not about the extraordinary, and they are not about superheroes. Set in towns that could really exist, the main characters are surrounded by ordinary people and are troubled by slightly unique circumstances, which they struggle to overcome. Based on well-thought-out scenarios, these real-to-life stories are made into dynamic animation. That’s why the main characters seem so familiar to us and draw our sympathy, and we get excited watching how they fare. -

For, t’was on Monday the 9th of October, 1978, at 6:15pm sharp (there were, blissfully for some, no ads and trailers in those days), Filmhouse (albeit under the name Edinburgh Film Theatre) began its first public screening – of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (now if that film isn’t a statement of curatorial intent, then I don’t know what is!). In those days, until the 15th of February 1982 in actual fact, when Cinema 1 opened, the entrance to the cinema was in the back lane (Chuckie Pend) and the only screen was the one we now call Cinema 2. As you may have spotted, since January, we’ve been retracing the history of Filmhouse by showing a film selected from each of the years across those 40, which comes to a conclusion in October with a four film selection from that first ever programme, including the aforementionedBitter Tears. I have hugely enjoyed trawling the archives to find out what to show, but what stands out very clearly is the number of films that were hugely popular at the time that just don’t seem to have had the ‘staying power’ enjoyed by most of the films that made it to the final list. It got me thinking... we should now milk the 40 years thing even further with a new programming ‘strand’ we might call The Forgotten Films of the First Forty Years of Filmhouse. -

Without the support of the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation, it wouldn’t have been possible. This year we will have 22 different films showing in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dundalk, Waterford, Sligo and of course, Dublin. We are delighted so many people throughout Ireland will get to experience these fantastic films. This year’s programme is one of the best yet, including films such as 100 Yen Love, a multi- award winning drama about how one argument can help transform your life. Nominated as Japan’s selection for Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Academy Awards, this film will surely warm your heart. When Marnie Was There, nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Academy Awards, is a Studio Ghibli produced animation telling the story of Anna, and her friendship with Marnie, who promises to keep her secrets from everyone. If you’re a fan of superstar idol Atsuko Maeda, we have two of her films: Initiation Love, a romance with a dark twist, and Tamako in Moratorium about an unemployed university graduate living with her father. 2016 is the 5th anniversary of the Great East Japan earthquake. Joy of Man’s Desiring is a film that explores the impact an unnamed earthquake has on children who lost their parents in the disaster. Informed by the director’s own childhood experience after the 1995 Kobe earthquake this film won a special mention at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. -

My previous film, Wolf Children, came out in Japan in 2012 and it is our studio’s practice not to start work on a new film until the release and promotion of our last film are over. I did not think up The Boy and the Beast during the production or release of Wolf Children, only much later, because I prefer to take the time to observe and understand audience reaction to a film, before starting on my next project. So it was only in early 2013 that I began to spend a year thinking it over with my team.
