In the Chinese Six Dynasties period they only managed to create barbarian tribal states. During the medieval Dark Ages, as war raged for a thousand years, the [German] people could not even read and write. Our China, however, that can look back on a unique five-thousand-year-old culture, is now supposed to take advice [from Germany], contrite and with its head bowed. DER HARZ, LANDSCHAFT UND KULTURRAUM (ID* Von FRIEDRICH GREIL* Aus Teil (1) sind noch folgende Pers6nlichkeiten aus Literatur und Kunst nachzutragen: Agricola (1494-1566)-Schnitter, Iatinisiert (eigtl. Schneider), Schuler Luthers, in dessen Heimatstadt Eisleben geboren. Agricola gab eine Sprichw6rter-Sammlung heraus, die noch heute von Sprachwissenschaftlern beachtet wird. Hans Witten, Bildhauer, Holzschnitzer, welcher wahrscheinlich aus Goslar stammt oder aus der Nahe (Daten unbekannt), war Ende des 15. und Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts in Niedersachsen und Obersachsen tatig. Bertihmt wurden seine um 1505 entstandene Marien- klage (Goslar, Jakobi-Kirche) und die etwas spater geschaffene Tulpenkanzel im Dom zu Freiberg. Leider ist der Name Hans Witten (Initialen HW) in den meisten heutigen Lexika nicht mehr zu finden. Es ist bemerkenswert, daB die beiden Bildhauer, deren Kunst einen letzten H6hepunkt der Spatgotik bedeutet, Riemenschneider und Witten, aus dem Harz stammen, einander aber nicht gekannt haben. Fern der Heimat schufen sie ihre unvergang- lichen Meisterwerke. Friedrich Wilhe!m Zacharid (1726-77), in Frankenhausen am Sudharz geboren, schrieb komische Epen uber rauf- und sauflustige Studenten. Bekannt wurde sein heiteres Helden- gedicht ,,Der Renommist." Eberhard Schmidt (1746-1824), geb. und gest. in Halberstadt,bildete mit seinem Freund Gleim den Mrttelpunkt des eme tandelnde ~~iokoko Lyrik pflegenden Halberstadter Dichterkreises. Caroline v. Sche!ling (1763-1809), geb. Michaelis, geb. in G6ttingen, verlebte dort ihre Kindheit und Jugend. Mit dem Shakespeare-Ubersetzer A.W. Schlegel verheiratet und mit dessen Bruder Friedrich Schlegel, dem geisti_~en Haupt der Fruhromantik, befreundet. wurde sie eine der bedeutendsten Frauen ihrer Zeit. Chinese and Taiwanese Perspectives on Japan’s Racial Equality Proposal Chinese and Taiwanese Perspectives on Japan’s Racial Equality Proposal* Shin Kawashima** Abstract The issues of racial equality and the eradication of racial discrimination, raised by Japan, became major points of discussion at the Paris Peace Conference. But racial equality was not a particularly important topic for China because China had other priorities. It was interested in regaining its own possessions and sovereign interests, and in finding a solution to the problem of Shandong in the Twenty-One Demands. China used its approval of the racial equality proposal when it was submitted for the second time as a tool to ensure that the bare minimum of its relationship with Japan would be maintained. Giving its approval to the proposal was a way of showing that although China was highly critical of Japan and skeptical of its intentions, it did not intend to risk an all-out confrontation and a total breach of relations. Across Chinese society, most people were extremely critical of Japan’s actions and saw its efforts on race as fundamentally connected to Japanese Pan-Asianism. On the other hand, in Taiwan, the racial equality proposal was viewed within the context of the policies of assimilation and equality. There were some people, both within Japan and Taiwan, who argued that Japan should put its house in order before raising the issue of racial equality or the eradication of racial prejudice with the world. Nevertheless, it did not necessarily mean that the racial equality proposal was at the forefront of what intellectuals were discussing in Taiwan, or that it was part of what inspired them to organize a petition movement to establish a Taiwanese parliament or to debate educational problems. -

Der Braunschweiger Klatsch wertete die überraschende Abreise als Flucht aus dem einen in den anderen Skandal: die Bezeichnung "Studentin in Zürich" deutete ebenfalls auf Anstößiges. Die Familie Huch galt dem Braunschweiger Bürgertum von jeher als zumindest exzentrisch. Daß sie "außerhalb der sogenannten besseren Gesellschaft" standen, erzählt Ricarda Huch in den ‹Jugendbildern› und macht für die Mißbilligung, gar Ablehnung, die man ihnen entgegenbrachte, den "Gegensatz von Freiheit und Spießbürgerlichkeit" verantwortlich. Den "Abenteurer" nennt sie ihren Großvater Heinrich Huch mit deutlicher Sympathie. Heinrich Huch war, nach unsteten Wanderjahren, aber immerhin mit einer Hamburger Patriziertochter als Ehefrau, um 1818 in der Stadt aufgetaucht, hatte die Hagenschänke gekauft und eine Zeitlang unter regem Zuspruch betrieben. Er erfand das "Huchsche Pulver", mit dem er die Bauern der Umgebung kurierte (auch umsonst, wenn es not tat), und begründete in Braunschweig das "Feuerlöschwesen". -

This paper was originally pre- pared for presentation at the European Society of International Law’s Tenth An- niversary Conference at Vienna, September 2014. Yokell ABSTRACT When Germany forced China to surrender part of the province of Shantung and the village of Tsingtau in 1897, it secured the long-standing wishes of a German China lobby that had articulated visions of empire that would achieve their individual objectives. While their various ideas were broad and not well defined, at their heart was that Germany should embrace a liberal, commercial model of empire: a “German Hong Kong” that would be a paradigm of colonial rule and a major power center in Asia. There exists a critical need to place Germany’s colonial experience in China in its proper historical context and appreciate its role in German imperialism and the development of a more globalized world at the turn of the twentieth century. This study critically analyzes the colony of Tsingtau in order to elucidate German ideas about empire during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The 3500 Germans in Tsingtau and their supporters created a nexus of associations to build a commercial center to rival British Hong Kong. Inspired by new historical trends, this work examines mid-level state and military officials, diplomats, businessmen, and religious leaders, the “middle management of empire,” that helped develop Tsingtau. -
