Powell: Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation (Under the direction of Jean Dennison and Rudolf Colloredo Mansfeld) Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation, examines the ways Osage citizens—and particularly artists—engage with mainstream audiences in museums and other spaces in order to negotiate, manipulate, subvert, and sometimes sustain static notions of Indigeneity. This project interrogates some of the tactics Osage and other American Indian artists are using to imagine a stronger future, as well as the strategies mainstream museums are using to build and sustain more equitable and mutually beneficial relationships between their institutions and Indigenous communities. In addition to object-centered ethnographic research with contemporary Osage artists and Osage citizens and collections-based museum research at various museums, this dissertation is informed by three recent exhibitions featuring the work of Osage artists at the Denver Art Museum, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Sam Noble Museum at the University of Oklahoma. Drawing on methodologies of humor, autoethnography, and collaborative knowledge-production, this project strives to disrupt the hierarchal structures within academia and museums, opening space for Indigenous and aesthetic knowledges. -

Hnv`x,Nsnd,Lhrrntqh` Sq`chshnm`k Rsnqhdr 1 Aøwnid,Ihv«qd,Øÿs∂`¬gh V«j`ƒ The Ioway-Otoe-Missouria Traditional Stories The Ioway - Otoe-Missouria Tribes were at one time a single nation with the Winnebago (Hochank) in the area of the Great Lakes, and separated as a single group in the area of Green Bay, Wisconsin. They migrated southward through the area of Wisconsin and Minnesota to the Mississippi River. Those who became known as the Ioway remained at the junction of the Iowa River, while the rest of the band traveled on, further West and South to the Missouri River. At the fork of the Grand River, a quarrel ensued between the families of two chiefs, and the band of people divided into the Otoe and Missouria tribes. The two communities remained autonomous until the Missouria suffered near annihilation from sickness and intertribal warfare over hunting boundaries aggravated by the fur trade. The remnant group merged with the Otoes in 1798 under their chiefs. However, by the 1830’s they had been absorbed by the larger community. In the 1880’s, the leaders went South and selected lands between the Ponca and Pawnee in Oklahoma Territory. Their numbers had been reduced to 334 members. The oral tradition of the several communities had ceased, on the whole, by the early 1940’s, although several contemporary versions of stories and accompanying songs were recorded by this writer from the last fluent speakers in 1970 - 1987. The final two fluent speaker of Ioway - Otoe-Missouria language died at Red Rock, Oklahoma in the Winter of 1996. -

Marie Celebrates Youth Council’s 20 Anniversary On September 18 and 19, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Youth Council (TYC) 20-Year Anniversary Mini Conference & Celebration was held at the Kewadin Casino & Convention Center. It was a huge success with approximately 40 youth attending from across the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians service area. For the past 20 years, tribal youth grades 8-12 have taken on Childhood Obesity, Suicide and Bullying Prevention, Drug Abuse, and Domestic Violence in their communities. The Youth Council has produced PSAs, workshops, and presentations that have been done on local, tribal, state, and national levels and also hold the annual Bike the Sites event, a 47-mile bicycle ride to raise awareness on Childhood Obesity and its effects. TYC alumni provided testimony on their experiences with the youth council and how TYC has helped them in their walk in life. The celebration continued during the evening with approximately 100 community members expressing their support during the potluck feast and drum social held at the Sault Tribe’s Culture Building. -

Women in History Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte: American Physician and Heroine Bernita L. Krumm Susan LaFlesche, youngest child in a family of one son and four daughters of Mary and Joseph LaFlesche, was born in 1865 on the Omaha reservation near Macy in northeastern Nebraska. LaFlesche was of mixed cultures, French and Native American. Her mother, Mary (One Woman), was a daughter of Dr. John Gale and Ni-co-mi of the Iowa tribe; Joseph, also known as Iron Eye (E-sta-mah-za), was a son of Joseph LaFlesche, a French trader and his wife, a woman of the Ponca tribe. Iron Eye was the last recognized chief of the Omaha and the last to become chief under the old Omaha rituals; he was the adopted son of Chief Big Elk, the First, of the Omahas. -

Volume 3, Issue 2 April 9, 2013 NAS Quarterly Native American Studies S P E C I A L Greetings from the Director of P O I N T S O F t h e INTEREST: USCL Native American Studies Updates from Spring and Summer at the NASC the Archive th Last month marked our 8 annual Native American Studies Week and our first to make use of our new Center. The week was a great success! We kicked The Applied off the week with a festival featuring some of our old friends exhibiting Linguist in pottery and performing dances, and we brought back flutist Monty “Hawk” Indian Branham, who was part of one of our first NAS Weeks. We hope to have him Country: back soon. The series of lectures this year were focused around the theme of Law and Preservation Justice. Jay Bender gave a fascinating account of his experiences helping to and Revival represent the Catawba Nation through its court battles. USC post-doc Rob of the Gilmer told us all about land and water issues in coastal Louisiana. Marcia Catawba Zug’s illuminating discussion of the upcoming US Supreme Court case of “Baby Veronica” and the Indian Child Welfare Act appears to have generated Language plans for a rally in support of the ICWA (contact me for more details at Part III [email protected]). Malinda Maynor Lowery’s discussion of Lumbee history and identity was a fascinating account of the struggles of our neighbors to the north; we were delighted to have her back at USCL.
