    Europe's Resource Grab Vested interests at work in the European Parliament Corporate Europe Observatory, 27 June 2011 On 30 June, the European Parliament’s industry, energy and research committee (ITRE) is due to vote on the EU’s Raw Materials Initiative, establishing guidelines for Europe's future policy on natural resource use. The Parliament’s report could effectively give the green light to mining in protected European nature reserves as well as a resource grab in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Arctic. The vote follows fierce calls from a number of MEPs with close links to industry for European big business to be allowed to exploit other countries’ raw materials without any restrictions – via trade, development and even military policies. MEPs have also tried to block strong language in the report on the need to stop corporate abuse in the extraction sector and to reduce Europe’s over- consumption of raw materials. Several of the MEPs pushing this aggressive agenda are from the European People’s Party (EPP) and have close links to industry sectors which have a vested interest in the raw materials debate (Bendt Bendtsen – Denmark; Herbert Reul and Daniel Caspary – Germany). Others such as Paul Rübig MEP (EPP, Austria) seem to have clear conflicts of interest1. Rübig profits from companies which depend heavily on the access to cheap raw materials. He also has close connections with industry lobby groups which have tried to shape the EU’s Raw Materials Initiative. Nonetheless, Rübig is one of the lead persons in the debate in Parliament and has set up a cross-party group of MEPs, the European Raw Materials Group, which will follow the issue, working closely with a parallel industry group.

Europäischen Parlament gewonnen CDU und CSU haben im Mai gemeinsam die Europawahl in Deutschland gewonnen. Mit 34 von insgesamt 96 deutschen Europaabgeordneten bilden wir trotz Einbußen die stärkste nationale Delegation im Europäischen Parlament. Die Kolleginnen und Kollegen haben mich erneut zum Vorsitzenden der CDU/CSU-Gruppe gewählt. Dr. Angelika Niebler von der CSU ist unsere neue Co-Vorsitzende. Die Union nimmt wieder besonders viele Schlüsselfunktionen in Fraktion und Parlament ein. ContraSalon: Parlamentspräsident Martin Schulz (SPD/S&D) hat früh gedroht: "Wenn Juncker zu wenige Frauen gewinnt und das Team unausgewogen ist, lassen wir (!) ihn durchfallen". Im Fall Slowenien hat Juncker die Kandidatin Bratusek ausdrücklich mit der Bemerkung hingenommen, die sei halt "sowohl Frau wie Liberale". Inzwischen steht eine Parlamentsmehrheit quer zu Bratusek. War dies unvermeidbar? Herbert Reul MdEP: Rückblickend kann man sagen, dass Frau Bratusek das schwächste Glied ihm möglichen Team war.

Opening of meeting chaired by the member provisionally holding the chair Mr Ehler points out that the main purpose of this meeting is to elect a new Chairman. Mr Ehler expresses his appreciation for the excellent co-operation among Members of this delegation in the past two years. Important developments have taken place in relations with both South Korea and North Korea and Members of this delegation have played an important role in strengthening relations with both. As regards the Republic of Korea, this delegation has been able to contribute in a very constructive manner to the deliberations in the relevant Committee on the EU-Korea FTA, and it has followed the negotiations on the revision of the EU-Korea Framework Agreement in a very active manner. It has also been a priority over the past two years to maintain channels of communication open with the DPRK, but this has not hindered the European Parliament and this delegation, in particular, to strongly condemn the various incidents that have taken place in inter-Korean relations. Last but not least, a number of initiatives were launched under the leadership of Mr Ehler to further strengthen relations with the Republic of Korea and provide added value to the strategic partnership between the EU and the Republic of Korea, such as the launch of the EU-Korea Leadership Forum, and preparations for an internship programme for Korean students and graduates at the European Parliament.
