  • Stephen Neal Senior Thesis Anthropomorphism and Zoomorphism
Stephen Neal Senior Thesis Anthropomorphism and Zoomorphism: The Philosophy and Prevalence in Pop Culture and in the History of Man Men are visual creatures. The eyes of man are designed to view the world in all its complexity and beauty. Human beings need to see things and give them a name before the object, animal, mineral, vegetable, et cetera, can be considered a reality. The ancients used to worship fierce deities and monsters that looked much like their human creators. Men today do the same thing with our deities and creatures of imagination, but today it is done with art, music, video, literature, and electronics. The philosophy of anthropomorphism is the application of human characteristics or feelings to an inhuman object (e.g. a car, desk, or pen) or organism (animal or a plant). It is philosophy that is still used today whether consciously or not. John McGraw says it best by stating, “we get „mad‟ at our cars (as if that could coerce the machine to perform) and infer every accident and every chance event in our lives as divinely sanctioned events. We punch the soda machine if it does not give us what we paid for, like we might punch a person who cheated us. The soda machine neither intends insult nor feels our injury” (24). Zoomorphism, however, is the application of lesser animal traits to a deity or a god-head. This is the more visual of the two philosophies, at least to begin with, as evidenced most strongly by the art of the ancients, especially in civilized cultures such as the Aztecs, the Romans and the Greeks, and the Egyptians.

@NerdNiteYVR vancouver.nerdnite.com Season One Wrap Episode Nerdin’ About Podcast Transcript, Season 1 Episode 16 Michael Hey everyone, welcome to Nerdin' About! I'm Space Michael, and with me as always is someone who has joined me on stage every month for the past seven years, and this year, we've only joined virtually, but I still love her dearly, and that is Dr. Kaylee Byers. How's it going Kaylee? Kaylee I'm well, thanks, that's so sweet. I really miss those stage events. Michael Well, it's certainly been an interesting, and weird year. So, this episode, we don't have a guest, we're just going to nerd out, me and you for a bit, and sort of wrap up our season, our first podcast! This is something that we've always wanted to do, and it took a pandemic to make us do it. Kaylee Opportunities, how they present themselves. Yeah, it's something that we had talked about, but we also originally had a different idea of what a podcast might be when it was running in tandem with actually having events. This allowed us to think about, "what would this event look like, if it became a podcast? What things do we want to talk about? What's the format we want to do?" That's been a huge learning experience, I learned how to edit audio, which is something I never thought that I would do. Is there anything about making this that's been surprising to you? Michael Well, you know, I think certainly, I've learned to listen better.

  • Future of Childrens Television
An independent report on The Future of Children’s Television Programming Deliberative research summary Prepared by Opinion Leader Publication date: 2nd October 2007 1 Contents 1. Executive summary 2. Introduction 3. The role of children's television 4. Satisfaction with children’s television 5. Public Service Broadcasting 6. Availability of children's programmes and channels 7. Range of children’s programme genres 8. New programmes and repeats 9. Country of origin of children’s programmes 10. Ideal futures for the provision of children’s programmes 11. Appendices 2 Executive summary Background Ofcom initiated the review of children’s television programming in response to a number of consumer and market changes. These include an increase in the range of media available to many children and a growing number of dedicated children’s channels, as well as changes in the way children consume media. As a result, traditional commercial public service broadcasters are facing significant pressures on their ability to fund original programming for children. These changes are occurring in the context of a new framework for the regulation of children’s programming, set out in the Communications Act 2003. Since the Act, ITV1, which had historically played a role in delivering a strong alternative voice to the BBC in terms of children’s programmes, has significantly reduced its commitments to children’s programming. This development, together with the other consumer and market changes outlined above, has led many to ask how public service children’s programming can continue to be delivered in the future. The Communications Act requires Ofcom to report on the fulfilment of the public service broadcasters’ public service remit at least once every five years and to make recommendations with a view to maintaining and strengthening the quality of public service broadcasting in the future.

  • Special Report: Journalists Face Arrests, Attacks, and Threats by Police Amidst Protests Over the Death of George Floyd N May 2020, Protests in Minneapolis, Minn
A PUBLICATION OF THE SILHA CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF MEDIA ETHICS AND LAW | WINTER/SPRING 2020 A Message from the Director This issue of the Silha Bulletin, produced by our graduate student research assistants, includes a special roundup examining how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected newsgathering and reporting. But as if our world has not been rocked enough by COVID-19, the civil unrest in the Twin Cities following the death of George Floyd on May 25 prompted us to pivot just as we were wrapping up this issue of the Bulletin. Please visit our website to see our running list of clashes between the press and law enforcement. Our website is available at: https://hsjmc.umn.edu/news/2020-06-02-list-incidents-involving-police-and-journalists-during-civil-unrest-minneapolis-mn. We haven’t neglected our usual analysis of significant media law and media ethics developments from around the country. We’ve continued to provide timely research assistance and commentary on issues affecting freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. Elaine Hargrove, Silha Program Assistant, has almost completed a massive migration of Silha Center content — including past issues of the Bulletin, research materials, and photographs and recordings of many Silha events — to our new web site: https://hsjmc. umn.edu/research-centers/centers/silha-center-study-media-ethics-and-law. Silha Center programming and outreach also continue. On June 3, we participated in the first of a series of Town Hall webinars hosted by the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication examining legal and ethical issues surrounding reporting on the civil unrest in the Twin Cities.

i WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY BRAND? THE MODERATING EFFECT OF BRAND NOSTALGIA ON CONSUMER RESPONSES TO CHANGED BRANDS A dissertation submitted to the Kent State University College of Business in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Alison B. Shields April 2012 ii iii Abstract Marketers often make changes to brands to make the brand seem current or exciting. Some updates are successful while others are spectacular failures. This dissertation establishes a connection between consumer acceptance or rejection of updated brands and the consumer’s reported brand nostalgia. In this dissertation, I refine the current marketing definitions of nostalgia to develop a more specific construct of brand nostalgia, develop a scale to measure the construct of brand nostalgia, examine the differences between schemas for nostalgic brands and non-nostalgic brands, and show that consumers’ affective and attitudinal responses to changes in a brand are moderated by brand nostalgia. Nostalgia has been defined as “a positively toned evocation of a lived past” (Davis 1979), and “a fondness for possessions and activities associated with days of yore” (Holbrook 1993). Consumers have been observed to engage in nostalgic behaviors, from re-watching favorite old movies (Holbrook, 1993) to reminiscing about favorite cars from their youth (Brown, Kozinets and Sherry 2003) to consuming specific foods as a way to reconnect with the past (Loveland, Smeesters and Mandel, 2010). Consumers have also reported nostalgic feelings for particular brands or items (Holbrook and Schindler 2003). When individuals recall nostalgic memories, they recall affect and brand information stored in their schema for the target brand (Collins and Loftus 1975).
