Stephen Neal Senior Thesis Anthropomorphism and Zoomorphism: The Philosophy and Prevalence in Pop Culture and in the History of Man Men are visual creatures. The eyes of man are designed to view the world in all its complexity and beauty. Human beings need to see things and give them a name before the object, animal, mineral, vegetable, et cetera, can be considered a reality. The ancients used to worship fierce deities and monsters that looked much like their human creators. Men today do the same thing with our deities and creatures of imagination, but today it is done with art, music, video, literature, and electronics. The philosophy of anthropomorphism is the application of human characteristics or feelings to an inhuman object (e.g. a car, desk, or pen) or organism (animal or a plant). It is philosophy that is still used today whether consciously or not. John McGraw says it best by stating, “we get „mad‟ at our cars (as if that could coerce the machine to perform) and infer every accident and every chance event in our lives as divinely sanctioned events. We punch the soda machine if it does not give us what we paid for, like we might punch a person who cheated us. The soda machine neither intends insult nor feels our injury” (24). Zoomorphism, however, is the application of lesser animal traits to a deity or a god-head. This is the more visual of the two philosophies, at least to begin with, as evidenced most strongly by the art of the ancients, especially in civilized cultures such as the Aztecs, the Romans and the Greeks, and the Egyptians. -

I'm Space Michael, and with me as always is someone who has joined me on stage every month for the past seven years, and this year, we've only joined virtually, but I still love her dearly, and that is Dr. Kaylee Byers. How's it going Kaylee? Kaylee I'm well, thanks, that's so sweet. I really miss those stage events. Michael Well, it's certainly been an interesting, and weird year. So, this episode, we don't have a guest, we're just going to nerd out, me and you for a bit, and sort of wrap up our season, our first podcast! This is something that we've always wanted to do, and it took a pandemic to make us do it. Kaylee Opportunities, how they present themselves. Yeah, it's something that we had talked about, but we also originally had a different idea of what a podcast might be when it was running in tandem with actually having events. This allowed us to think about, "what would this event look like, if it became a podcast? What things do we want to talk about? What's the format we want to do?" That's been a huge learning experience, I learned how to edit audio, which is something I never thought that I would do. Is there anything about making this that's been surprising to you? Michael Well, you know, I think certainly, I've learned to listen better. -

Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Children’s educational puppeteer Kevin Clash was born on September 17, 1960 in Turner’s Station, a predominantly black neighborhood in the Baltimore, Maryland suburb of Dundalk, to George and Gladys Clash. In 1971, at the age of ten, Clash began building puppets, after being inspired by the work of puppeteers on the Sesame Street television program, a passion that stuck with him throughout his teen years. His first work on television was for WMAR, a CBS affiliate that produced a show entitled Caboose. Clash also performed a pelican puppet character for the WTOP- TV television program Zep. In his late teens, Clash met Kermit Love, a puppet designer for the Muppets, who arranged for Clash to observe the Sesame Street set. -
