ADDRESS BY H.E. JERRY JOHN RAWLINGS AT THE LAUNCH OF THE BOOK THE PROFESSOR: THE LIFE STORY OF AZUMAH NELSON ALISA HOTEL ACCRA, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 29, 2014 Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen: It is my pleasure to join Professor Azumah Nelson in launching The Professor, a book about his extraordinary life – a life perhaps unparalleled in Ghana’s rich history. Athletics, football and boxing were sporting disciplines that put Ghana on the world map during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, as Ghana participated in various tournaments from the All Africa Games to the Commonwealth through to the Olympics. While we can describe the performances of our sportsmen as commendable, it was the genius of Azumah that sent some across the globe to check the position of Ghana on the world map. Azumah put Ghana on the map long before football did through the Starlets 91 group that proudly annexed the World Under-17 Cup. The story of Azumah is truly one of a man who was never intimidated by the challenges of his humble beginnings. He saw every challenge as a reason to create an opportunity. Author Ashley Morrison does an excellent literary job of piecing together the Azumah story, the Azumah way – full of innocence, candour and emotion. The book not only showcases Azumah’s lineage and ancestry but also Ghana’s rich cultural history. It leaves nothing out in capturing the socio- political situation that persisted especially during the world title days. It was quite instructive when Azumah’s childhood friend Obi Oblitey offered a vivid description of the beauty of the blue seawater that used to be the Korle Lagoon – full of fish that swam in peaceful abandon surrounded by coconut trees that bordered the river bank.

Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library White House Communications Agency (WHCA): Videotapes of Public Affairs, News, and Other Television Broadcasts, 1973-77 WHCA selectively created, or acquired, videorecordings of news and public affairs broadcasts from the national networks CBS, NBC, and ABC; the public broadcast station WETA in Washington, DC; and various local station affiliates. Program examples include: news special reports, national presidential addresses and press conferences, local presidential events, guest interviews of administration officials, appearances of Ford family members, and the 1976 Republican Convention and Ford-Carter debates. In addition, WHCA created weekly compilation tapes of selected stories from network evening news programs. Click here for more details about the contents of the "Weekly News Summary" tapes All WHCA videorecordings are listed in the table below according to approximate original broadcast date. The last entries, however, are for compilation tapes of selected television appearances by Mrs. Ford, 1974-76. The tables are based on WHCA’s daily logs. “Tape Length” refers to the total recording time available, not actual broadcast duration. Copyright Notice: Although presidential addresses and very comparable public events are in the public domain, the broadcaster holds the rights to all of its own original content. This would include, for example, reporter commentaries and any supplemental information or images. Researchers may acquire copies of the videorecordings, but use of the copyrighted portions is restricted to private study and “fair use” in scholarship and research under copyright law (Title 17 U.S. Code). For more information, please contact [email protected]. INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

1 Jeff Fenech v Azumah Nelson, Princess Park, Melbourne 1992 The crowd here at Melbourne’s Princess Park is restless. The main event, Azumah Nelson versus Jeff Fenech for the world light-weight championship, is due to start at 2 p.m. It has been raining steadily since the program of preliminary bouts commenced at 11 a.m. Now, one hour before fight time, Australian Spike Cheney is boxing Argentinean Juan Rodrigez in the final preliminary. Cheney is a skillful boxer, but it‟s like watching a comedian tell old jokes. The crowd can’t wait for him to finish. “Put him away Spike,” yells one hairy gap toothed individual. “Send him back home to Argentina in a box,” yells another tattooed behemoth. A boxing crowd is not a good place to find the new age sensitive male. “Send, that bloody Argentinean, back to the Falklands” gets a few laughs from the politically incorrect crowd. But “Spike him Cheney,” gets a mass groan for the budding Grouch Marx guzzling his beer two rows back. Not all boxing spectators have violent dispositions and racist tendencies. Boxings primeval brutality and flamboyant showmanship, also attracts the rich and famous. Media magnate Kerry Packer and actor Paul Hogan are here today, along with many authentic examples James of the Aussie Male yobbo. Amongst this yobbo fraternity it is interesting to see how body building has taken the place of tattoos as the symbol of Aussie male machismo. Tatoos haven‟t disappeared. There are still plenty of snakes on arms, spider web elbows and HATE inscribed knuckles.

  • Arctic Winter Games Exhibit Documents History
Arctic Winter Games exhibit documents history When George V. Smith began collecting lapel pins from the Arctic Winter Games (AWG) in 1992, he had no idea that this would eventually lead to a museum exhibit. His collection grew with each passing game and in 2001 he began to solicit donations from those who participated in earlier years in an effort to amass a definitive collection for the Alaska State Museum. The collection is nearly complete and totals almost 1,000 pins. Smith’s efforts led to the development of an exhibition on the history and organization of the Arctic Winter Game to coincide with the hosting of the Arctic Winter Games. The exhibition, titled simply Arctic Winter Games, was organized by the Alaska State Museum in Juneau, with Smith as guest curator. The exhibit describes the evolution of the Games, the sports, awards and cultural activities, as well as the Games’ organizational structure. In addition to the collection of AWG-related pins, the show features photo panels, jackets, team clothing, sports equipment, emblems, mascots and other paraphernalia. Smith has also written labels to accompany the exhibit describing the Games and their history. Smith said, “While the pin collection may have been the impetus for building an AWG collection for the Alaska State Museum, it could never have happened without the generous donations of clothing, posters, and other materials by many AWG enthusiasts from Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Northern Alberta.” The Arctic Winter Games are staged every two years in either Alaska, Canada, or Greenland. Northern cities compete with each other for the privilege of hosting the Games, much like the Olympic Games host cities.
