Transmedia Muppets: the Possibilities of Performer Narratives
Volume 5, Issue 2 September 2012 Transmedia Muppets: The Possibilities of Performer Narratives AARON CALBREATH-FRASIEUR, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT This article examines how the Muppets franchise engages with transmedia narratives, their stories moving fluidly between television, film, comics, the internet and more. Rather than highlight the complexity Henry Jenkins (2006), Elizabeth Evans (2011) and others associate with transmedia, an examination of the Muppets offers insight into a mechanism that allows for simpler coherent connection between texts. The Muppets’ ongoing performer narrative challenges the prevailing understanding of transmedia storytelling. As performative characters (singers, actors, performance artists), any text concerned with Muppets, even those in which they act as other characters, becomes part of an overarching Muppet narrative. A high degree of self-reflexivity further supports transmediality, as most Muppet texts contain references to that text as a performance by the Muppets. Thus the comic Muppet Robin Hood and the film Muppet Treasure Island continue the story of the Muppets as further insight is gained into the characters' personalities and ongoing performance history. Examining different iterations of the Muppets franchise illuminates the ramifications of performer narratives for transmedia storytelling. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, franchise, narrative, Muppets, multi-platform For over fifty-five years the Muppets have been appearing in media texts. They began on local television but have spread across most contemporary mediums, with many of these texts part of the over-arching, ongoing Muppet story. This article explores an alternative framework for defining one form of transmedia storytelling. This model suggests a complication in the understanding of transmedia storytelling put forward by Henry Jenkins (2006) and Elizabeth Evans (2011). -

If you've never seen it, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzAnE4zuYuA. Why don't they make trailers like that any more? All modern trailers seem to come out of a computerised trailer-maker that's been programmed not by a human being but by the last 1000 trailers to emerge from that very same trailer-maker. They use sound to indicate not the distinctive characteristic of any film but to bludgeon the senses as if in a disco. They use special effects indiscriminately. The pace of the editing is frenetic, irrespective of the pace of the film itself. Lines of dialogue are selected not to hint at the storyline – the film's premise, its narrative hook – but for their ability to shock. Sometimes the nature of that shock is totally out of sympathy with the mood of the movie. These trailers could be for any one of 50 quite different feature films. The Psycho trailer could be for no film other than Psycho. Hitchcock himself takes us on a guided tour of the scene of the crimes. At one point he opens a cupboard, the door swinging towards the camera so that we can't see inside. He looks in: then closes it again with just a flick of an expression in our direction. -

The Serious Business of Graphic Novels Guide by A. David Lewis (11/10/06) Prepared for the NACAE 1. This is just the title slide, something static yet interesting to have on the screen while the audience is waiting. In addition to specifying the date and place (to make it seem tailored for them), I really like the contrast between a “serious” title and a very “un-serious” image (in this case, my own caricature); it’s also a decent place to “hide” your own logo or company name in plain sight, if such is the case for you. I would only ask, as people modify and use this presentation as a template, that they mention its being “Derived from The Serious Business of Graphic Novels by A. David Lewis, courtesy of the NACAE” as some sort of sub-title. It needn’t even be that big and it gives you a bail-out if the audience objects to something or asks a question to which you don’t know the answer. 2. This slide is entirely optional but highly necessary in some fashion if the group to whom you are speaking is unfamiliar with you. That is, if it’s your own class, skip it; they know you, and you already have (hopefully!) a rapport. But, if you’re relatively new to them, then this should be your “credentials slide:” Why should they listen to you about comics? The goal here is “show, don’t tell” -- You’ll explain what your own book covers or university campus photographs or company building means aloud. -

JF: Today is October 2, 1998. The following interview is with Charles H. Bell, former chairman and president of General Mills, Inc. The interview was recorded in the Governor's Room of the Minneapolis Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The principal interviewer is James P. Shannon, former head of the General Mills Foundation, the Minneapolis Foundation, and of the National Council on Foundations. Also present at the interview were Nina Archabal, director of the Minnesota Historical Society, David Hartwell, head of Bellcomb Technologies Incorporated and the Belwin Foundation (and grandson of Charles Bell), David S. Wiggins, program manager at the Society's St. Anthony Falls Historic Site, and James E. Fogerty, head of the Society's Acquisitions & Curatorial Department. Fogerty recorded the interview. Bell JS: I was wondering about the correlative advantages of the radio station. I'm thinking this is the time of Sam Gale as a sales representative for General Mills. H. CB: Advertising. JS: There had been no advertising on radio before that, and I can remember--I was actually singing a jingle to myself in the car coming downCharles from home this morning. I think it was the first radio commercial that I can remember, thoughSociety maybe not the first one I've heard. We had one of these Philco radio sets that was called the cathedral type, it looks like a stained-glass window or a gothic arch.with The jingle was, "Won't you try Wheaties, the best breakfast food in the land. Won't you try Wheaties, Skippy never tires of them and neither will you, so just try Wheaties." That was new territory in sales, in advertising. -

Super Citizen By Reg P. Wydeven May 7, 2011 The other day my son and I were shopping for underwear for him. It took us quite a while to pick some, as he had so many characters to choose from (I’m proud to say he chose ‘Star Wars’). As we shopped, I couldn’t help but think about the Underoos underwear I had when I was my son’s age. Underoos were awesome underwear consisting of an undershirt and briefs that resembled the costumes of popular characters. I had sets to look like Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett and Aquaman. I even had a set of long underwear that looked like Batman’s costume. My favorite pair, however, was easily Superman. While I loved ‘Star Wars,’ there was nothing quite like unbuttoning your shirt after a long day of school to expose that red ‘S.’ After all, what could be cooler to a six-year-old than pretending to be the Man of Steel, who was faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? I would dream about being able to fly and fight “the never ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.” If my son would have settled on the Superman undies, however, he could only pretend to fight the never ending battle for truth and justice.
