  • Is Caste System Prevalent Among the Syrian Christians of Kerala? a Critical Analysis
Vol. 5 No. 3 January 2018 ISSN: 2321-788X UGC Approval No: 43960 Impact Factor: 2.114 IS CASTE SYSTEM PREVALENT AMONG THE SYRIAN CHRISTIANS OF KERALA? A CRITICAL ANALYSIS THOMAS P JOHN Assistant Professor in History St. Xavier’s College, Thumba, Kerala, India Article Particulars: Received: 25.11.2017 Accepted: 06.12.2017 Published: 20.01.2018 Abstract The concept of caste has ever been a reality in all societies and countries, and yet there exists some ambiguities in understanding the concept of caste in some communities. A great confusion exists among the academicians as well as in the general public about the concept of caste in the Syrian Christian community in Kerala. The multiplicity of denominations among them, each having their own Rite, Liturgy, Clergy, Ecclesial hierarchy etc. had created great confusion among the people especially among the non Christians. Vague ideas had taken position and a majority including learned historians and thinkers are totally mistaken in this regard. Some interpret these varieties as separate castes. Hence, an earnest attempt to find out the truth in this matter is urgent. This article is an attempt to deactivate the wrong concepts about the caste factor in the Syrian Christian community and to replace it with the most reasonable and genuine knowledge of the same. It finds out that all the different Syrian Christian groups except the ‘Knanites’ forms one single cast and the difference is only denominational. • Jesuit Mission Among St. Thomas Christians in India (16Th-17Th Centuries)1
JEMH 9,3-4_f3_284-325II 10/14/05 6:26 PM Page 284 “ONE CIVILITY, BUT MULTIPLE RELIGIONS”: JESUIT MISSION AMONG ST. THOMAS CHRISTIANS IN INDIA (16TH-17TH CENTURIES)1 INES G. ¥UPANOV Research Fellow, CNRS, Paris A The encounter between the Jesuit missionaries and the St. Thomas Christians or Syrian Christians in Kerala in the second part of the sixteenth century was for both sides a significant opening to different cultural beliefs and routines. An important and under- studied outcome of this encounter, documented here on the Jesuit side, was the possi- bility of accepting religious plurality, at least within Christianity. The answers to the questions of how to deal with religious diversity in Christianity and globally, oscillated between demands for violent annihilation of the opponents and cultural relativism. The principal argument in this paper is that it was the encounter with these “ancient” Indian Christians that made the missionaries aware of the importance of the accommodationist method of conversion. This controversial method employed in the Jesuit overseas mis- sions among the “heathens”, has therefore been first thought out and tested in their mis- sion among the St. Thomas Christians in the late sixteenth century. The preeminent role of the Jesuit missionaries as the Catholic task force throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is well known. Posted in their missions, residences and colleges on four continents between 1542 and 1773, they were no simple administrators of the holy rituals and agents of indoctrination. Depending on the missionary context, the local geography of the sacred, and the political environment, the Jesuits creatively re-interpreted Christianity in order to accommodate it to non- Christian peoples and cultures.

The leading question is: to what extent does the indigenous narrative of that community about their religious identity differ from existing dominant historical accounts? It examines texts in Malayalam from the Jacobite Syrian Christians, particularly the unpublished 18th century Mathai Vettikkunnel manuscript, in order to investigate the narrative of their religious identity, in the context of existing scholarly discourse.

FINANCE OFFICER IN THE SYRO-MALABAR MAJOR ARCHIEPISCOPAL CHURCH by Matthew CHANGANKARY A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Canon Law Saint Paul University, Ottawa, Canada, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Canon Law Ottawa, Canada Saint Paul University 2012 © Matthew Changankary, Ottawa, Canada, 2012 ABSTRACT The promulgation of the CCEO and the elevation of the Syro-Malabar Church sui iuris to the status of a major archiepiscopal Church, on 16 December 1992, are important milestones in the recent history of the Church. The new status of the Syro- Malabar Church necessitated a revised system of administration of its temporal goods. Previously the administration of ecclesiastical goods of the Syro-Malabar Church was ruled predominantly by the motu proprios Postquam apostolicis litteris, Cleri sanctitati, and customary law both at the eparchial and parish levels. In the present situation a new ecclesiastical office, that of the finance officer of the major archiepiscopal Church, was created. The thesis presents the office of finance officer and examines critically the canonical aspects of his/her status and duties. It analyzes the canons contained in CCEO related to temporal goods, as well as other universal and particular ecclesiastical norms. In particular, the sources include various synodal decrees, eparchial/diocesan statutes of the Syro-Malabar Church, and relevant particular laws of the respective major archiepiscopal Churches. Pertinent Indian civil laws are also considered in the context of the functions of the finance officer. The thesis provides a historical perspective of the financial administration of the Syro-Malabar Church, and then continues to situate the office of the finance officer in the organizational structure of the financial administration of the Syro-Malabar Church.

  • Struggles of Syrian Christians Through 19 to 21 Centuries
IOSR Journal Of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 22, Issue 12, Ver. 5 (December. 2017) PP 01-06 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org In search of an Autonomous Social Identity: Struggles of Syrian Christians through 19th to 21st Centuries Saji Varghese Research Scholar, School of Gandhian Thought and Development Studies Abstract: The Syrian Christian community is proud of their “Indian Christian” identity. Such an autonomous identity is in the process of fulfillment. In fact, the social identity of Syrian Christians is the synthesis of the noble traditions of St.Thomas, the Apostolic and the native cultural traits of India. The colonial period was threat to independence of the church. The colonial domination from Portuguese to the West Syrian has inflicted many scars on the native identity of the Syrian Community. However, the valiant resistance by the church paved the way for the formation of a distinct social identity free from all kinds of control from the foreign agencies. The independent identity of the community has played an important role in shaping the economic prosperity of the people. The administrative system of the church also underwent radical changes reflecting more democratic values instilled in it. The constitution of 1934 was a turning point in which the Syrian Christians proclaimed their sovereignty and autocephalacy. The Syrian Christians also stand unpolluted in the case of receiving foreign fund or Eurocentric influence as far as the church identity is concerned. Thus, the Syrian Christians wish to formulate this distinct social identity based on independence and indigenous values.
